Competencies of the Communication & Journalism Programs

Communication Competencies

  1. Students will understand the fundamental principles of communication.

  2. Students will understand and be able to evaluate and apply major theories of interpersonal, small group, public and mass communication.

  3. Students will understand and be able to evaluate the cultural, social and economic role of communication in contemporary American society

  4. Students will be able to analyze and to apply major theories of public discourse.

  5. Students will be able to apply their specialized knowledge (from an advertising and public relations perspective) to analyze and solve problems and challenges in specific contexts.

  6. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of the communication field to real world situations.

  7. Students will be able to synthesize knowledge of their chosen area in integrated communication.

  8. Students will understand and be able to evaluate major theories of organization and how internal and external structures effect those organizations.

  9. Students will be able to integrate practical theory with real world application.

  10. Students will be able to evaluate the relevance of communication relative to other positions in different contexts.

Journalism Competencies

  1. Students will understand and be able to apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press, including the right to dissent, to monitor and criticize power, and to assemble and petition for redress of grievances.

  2. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the history and role of professionals and institutions in shaping communications.

  3. Student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of groups in a global society in relationship to media.

  4. Students understand concepts and be able to apply theories in the use and presentation of images and information.

  5. Student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of professional ethical principles and work ethically in pursuit of truth, accuracy, fairness and diversity.

  6. Students will be able to think critically, creatively and independently.

  7. Student will be able to conduct research and to evaluate information by methods appropriate to the professions in which they work.

  8. Student will be able to write correctly and clearly in forms and styles appropriate for the media and the audiences and purposes they will serve.

  9. Student will be able to critically evaluate their own work and that of others for accuracy and fairness, clarity, appropriate style and grammatical correctness.

  10. Students will be able to apply basic numerical and statistical concepts.

  11. Student will be able to apply tools and technologies appropriate for the media professions in which they work.
