COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROGRAM Program Director: George Schaefer, M.S. The Computer Information Systems Program offers a B.S. and an A.S. in Computer Information Systems (CIS), a B.S. in Management Information Systems (MIS), an A.S. in Computer Applications and a Certificate in Business Data Processing. Certificate in Business Data Processing The Certificate in Business Data Processing is designed as a threshold experience suitable for those looking to upgrade their computer skills for use in a modern office environment. A.S. in Computer Information Applications The A.S. in Computer Information Applications has an emphasis on the development of computer-based information technology management software application skills. This degree is the perfect foundation for those wanting to continue their education in the Management Information Systems (MIS) or Organizational Management accelerated degree programs. A.S. in Computer Information Systems The A.S. in Computer Information Systems has an emphasis on the development of entry-level structured, object-oriented and Web-based software development. B.S. in Computer Information Systems
The B.S. in Computer Information Systems curriculum is designed to satisfy all the requirements for the Microsoft Professional Developer certification . While primarily concerned with the application of the system development life cycle to business-oriented, computer-based systems, the curriculum is also designed to develop a clear understanding of the foundations of business computing environments as well as emerging technologies in information systems. The CIS’s core curriculum includes the study of system analysis, structured and object-oriented system design and logic, Web-based programming concepts, and the design and development of enterprise-level applications. To complement this core curriculum, a selection of courses in other technical and business areas pertinent to the development, implementation, and maintenance of information systems in a variety of organizational settings are included to develop a holistic curriculum content. Students earning this degree will have the necessary skills to sit for the Microsoft Professional Developer certification exams. B.S. in Management Information Systems The Computer Information Systems Program offers a B.S. in Management Information Systems, which will prepare you to become an effective leader in today’s fast-paced world of computing. The B.S in MIS is designed to meet the educational needs of adult students unable to complete their degree in the traditional manner. The MIS degree is offered with flexible start-ups, convenient scheduling, and credit for prior accredited college work and credit for life learning experiences. It is designed for maximum convenience for the work and personal life of the busy adult and can be completed in 18 months of concentrated study. After completing the 14 courses in the MIS curriculum, students graduate with a fully accredited bachelor’s degree. Course content focuses on project management, alternative sourcing techniques, and writing and managing contracts currently used in sourcing strategies. These skills, coupled with focused management courses, prepare students to manage advanced technology as well as leading-edge information systems development techniques. Case studies, group projects and hands-on laboratory work prepare students to effectively manage technical computing environments. Cluster groups of approximately 15 adult learners meet once a week for
4 hours and remain together for the entire program. In this collaborative
learning environment, students are encouraged to bring their personal
experiences to the classroom, integrate what they know with what they
learn and share their experiences with other students. Graduates leave
Calumet College of St. Joseph possessing the personal and professional
skills needed to succeed in today’s highly technical computing
field. |
