REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree | Associate's Degree | Minor | Other Requirements B.A. in English and Professional Writing The Bachelor of Arts program in English and Professional Writing introduces the student to the major areas of language and literature of the western tradition and also the major works of other traditions around the world. Graduates of this program will become familiar with the literature of England and America, as well as ancient Greek and Roman, some French, Russian, Latin American, African, Native American, and Asian literary works, thought and writing. Students will engage in writing exercises that will stimulate their imagination in whatever field they choose, and will learn the correct modes of self-expression. The program seeks to reflect the pluralism of our society and the richness of varied expression. The following core courses are required for a major in English: English 260-261; 270-271; 320; 430. Concentration in Literature The English major with a concentration in Literature focuses on the study and analysis of literature written in English from the Ninth century to the present time. This emphasis serves as an excellent preparation for graduate study in literature, librarianship, law, and careers in human resources, public relations, publishing, and other communication oriented occupations. The following courses are required for a major in English with a concentration in Literature:
Concentration in Journalism The English major with a concentration in Journalism offers a broad study of English language and literature, with an emphasis on writing and working for the print media. It is designed to prepare students for graduate work in journalism and careers which require sophisticated research and writing. The following courses are required for a major in English with a concentration in Journalism:
Concentration in Creative Writing The English major with a concentration in Creative Writing exposes students to the best world writers and provides them with training in writing diverse genres and forms. A student electing this concentration will be prepared for graduate study in literature or creative writing and be prepared to submit writing for professional publication. The following courses are required for a major in English with a concentration in Creative Writing:
English major students in any of these concentrations may complete either a research thesis or practicum in the area of their choice (See ENG 499). When writing a thesis, students would research an area or subject in literature in which they wish to become more experienced in their scholarship. The practicum would be with a regional company or firm in an area which English majors traditionally work (e. g., publishing, media, or public relations). If you are interested in doing ENG 499 with either a thesis or practicum, see the English Program Director the semester before you wish to do the seminar. Back to top The requirements for a minor in English sequence are any 12 hours in upper-level courses or combination of upper-level hours and English 260 and/ or 261 and English 270 and/ or 271 (both strongly recommended). A student wishing a teaching minor in English must take English 320. Back to top All English majors must fulfill the General Education requirements listed in the General Education Program in this catalog as well as other requirements for the appropriate certificate or degree (see General Education requirements). It is strongly recommended that one of the English major's Global Perspectives courses be the one dealing with Asia and Africa. Back to the English Program |
