Course Description: The concept of “managed” change is introduced.  Students assess historical and contemporary models.  Leadership in a healthcare setting is discussed.  Particular emphasis is placed on the use of force field analysis to identify and resolve obstacles to effective change.

 

Prerequisites:  None

 

Textbooks: Strategic Management of Healthcare Organizations,  Ginter, Swayne, and Duncan

 

Statement of Plagiarism:

If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter up for judicial review. The maximum penalty for any form of academic dishonesty is dismissal from the College. Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

Degree Completion Division (DCD) students should consult the DCD Student Handbook for information on DCD withdrawals.

 

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a

course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" grade for the course (see

Refund Schedule).

 

Class Policy for Assignments:  Students will be given ample time to work on their assignments.  All assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the class period they are due.  NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

 

 

 

 

Class Policy on Attendance:  Students are expected to attend all class sessions.   If a student must miss a class session, they are expected to contact the instructor prior to the class session.  If a student misses more than one four-hour class session they will be administratively withdrawn from that class.

 

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes:

 

As a continuation of HCM 314, students will use critical thinking skills in resolving obstacles for making effective change.

 

Students will use “managed” change to explore leadership issues in the healthcare field.

 

Skill Outcomes:

 

Students will demonstrate communication skills (verbal and listening) by actively being involved in class discussions and group interactions.

 

Students will analyze healthcare cases and articulate them to their peers in class.  They will also lead a discussion of assigned cases.

It is expected that all students will be in class each week.  It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor if a class will be missed.  Arrangements for work to be made up are at the discression of the instructor.

 

Format for Written Assignments:

Students will adhere to the American Psychological Association Guidelines (APA) style for all papers.

 

 

 

Class Assignments:

 

Each student is expected to participate in discussions of current news items regarding healthcare, the text assignment, and the assigned case presentation.  Each student will be assigned one case to present to the class.  Current newspaper and journal articles relevant to healthcare issues may also be assigned.

Case Presentation – Each student will be assigned a case from the text to present and lead a discussion.  The time frame is 20 minutes.  Each presentation will be accompanied by a typed outline to be distributed to the students.
