Textbooks: Tyler’s Guide, The Healthcare Executive’s Job Search, 1998, J. Larry Tyler,
American College of Healthcare Executives, Second Edition.
Statement of Plagiarism:
If
an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a
student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic
dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter up
for judicial review. The maximum penalty for any form of academic dishonesty is
dismissal from the College. The procedures for judicial review are listed under
the section of CCSJ handbook that addresses student grievances.
Calumet
College of St. Joseph adheres to citation guidelines as prescribed by the particular
discipline (i.e., MLA, APA, and Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian.). All of these guidelines are available in the
Calumet College of St. Joseph library or bookstore. These texts outline how to cite references from a variety of
sources, including electronic media.
Withdrawal from Classes
Policy:
Degree
Completion Division (DCD) students should consult the DCD Student Handbook for
information on DCD withdrawals. An
official withdrawal is recorded as a “W” grade on the student’s transcript. Dropping a course without written permission
automatically incurs an “F” grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).
Class Policy on Attendance:
Students
are expected to attend all class sessions.
If a student must miss a class session they are expected to contact the
instructor prior to the class session.
If a student misses more than one four-hour class session, they will be
administratively withdrawn from that class.
Class Policy For
Assignments:
Students
will be given ample time to work on their assignments. All assignments are to be turned in at the
end of the class period they are due. THE INSTRUCTOR MUST APPROVE LATE
ASSIGNMENTS.
Course Objectives:
At
the completion of the course, the student will be able to:

Submit
a professional portfolio, which will include; a detailed record of academic
accomplishments, selected assignments, and samples of writing and presentation
projects.
·
Provide
a record of professional experiences and other documentation displaying
readiness for entry into a healthcare management role.
·
Develop
a personal career plan that outlines specific strategies for professional,
academic, and personal development.
·
Develop
a personal vision/mission statement in order to understand what their purpose
is by articulating who they are, what they are about, and what they value.
·
Provide
a detailed location analysis choosing two environments in the healthcare field
of where they can practice healthcare management.

Format for Written
Assignments:
Students will adhere to the American Psychological Association Guidelines (APA) style for all papers.
Please
read all chapters before they are discussed in class.

Description of
Assignments:
Skill Identification, Goal Setting, and Accomplishment Assignment:
Students are expected to complete a handout given to them by
the instructor. This is to be handed in
along with a two to three page double-spaced typed paper summarizing their
experience in doing these types of exercises in regard to career
exploration/planning.
Updated
Resume and Cover Letter:
Each
student must turn in an updated resume along with a sample cover letter.
Professional
Portfolio/Career Plan:
Each
student will submit a professional portfolio displaying academic
accomplishments, selected assignments, and samples of writing and presentation
projects. Each student will also
develop a personal career plan that outlines specific strategies for
professional, academic and personal growth.
The instructor will be giving each student various handouts with
guidelines in order to complete this project.
Detailed
Location Analysis Paper/Presentation:
Students
are to pick two environments in healthcare and write up a detailed location
analysis of where they can practice healthcare management. It should be a typed 3 to 5 page
double-spaced paper including the process of what they did, who they talked to
if anyone, and what they would be expected to do in that healthcare role (job
description). Each student will also be
expected to give a five to ten minute oral presentation of his or her detailed
location analysis findings to the class.
Personal
Mission/Vision Statement:
Each
student will write and develop a personal mission/vision statement. The instructor during the class will hand
out step by step guidelines. It should
be a typed 5 to 7-page double-spaced reflective paper.
Current
Event Healthcare Management Articles:
Each
student will be expected to present a current event article focused on
professional/career related jobs in healthcare management.
Class
Participation:
Each
student should actively participate in class discussion as well as be punctual
for each class meeting time.
