Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the role of financial management in health services.  Students will be exposed to the different models of financial analysis used both in health care and in general business.  Students will examine and learn how to prepare and analyze a  break-even analysis, financial ratio,  and determine the financial viability of a current or proposed service.  Capital,  and  operational budgeting will also be reviewed 

 

Prerequisites:  None

 

Textbooks: Finance and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers, William G Droms,

 The Financial Management of Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations, Michael Nowicki, AUPHA

 

Statement of Plagiarism: If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter up for judicial review. The maximum penalty for any form of academic dishonesty is dismissal from the College. Calumet College of St. Joseph adheres to citation guidelines as prescribed by the particular discipline (i.e., MLA, APA, Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian.).  All of these guidelines are available in the Calumet College of St. Joseph library or bookstore.  These texts outline how to cite references from a variety of sources, including electronic media.

 

Withdrawal from Classes Policy:  Degree Completion Division (DCD) students should consult the DCD Student Handbook for information on DCD withdrawals.

 

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a  course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).

 

Class Policy for Assignments:  Students will be given ample time to work on their assignments.  All assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the class period they are due.  NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

 

Class Policy on Attendance:  Students are expected to attend all class sessions.   If a student must miss a class session they are expected to contact the instructor prior to the class session.  If a student misses more than one four-hour class session they will be administratively withdrawn from that class.

 

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes:

 

Ø      Students will be able identify and analyze a Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Statement of Cash Flows

Ø      Students will demonstrate an understanding of  budgeting in the health care

Ø      Students will be able to understand and use the break-even analysis tool

Ø      Students will be able to complete a financial analysis of a current and proposed service

Ø      Students will be able to better understand financial ratios

 

 

Assessment:

 

            Midterm                       25% of grade

            Final Exam                   35% of grade

            Topic Paper                 20% of grade

            Class Participation        10% of grade

            Assignments                 10% of grade

            (Financial Analysis, Break Even Point, Budgets)

 

Grading Scale:

 

A: 100 – 90%, B: 89 – 80%, C: 79 – 70%, D: 69 – 60%, F: Below 59%

 

It is expected that all students will be in class each week.  It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor if a class will be missed.  Arrangements for work to be made up are at the discretion of the instructor.

 

Format for Written Assignments: Students will adhere to the American Psychological Association Guidelines (APA) style for all papers.

Topic Paper:

Students will prepare a 5 page paper (APA) about a healthcare finance related issue.  This topic will be selected by the student and must be put in writing to the instructor by the second class. This will consist of a typed ½ page stating the topic and a general paragraph about the topic.  STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT CHOSEN THEIR TOPIC BY THE SECOND CLASS WILL HAVE THEIR PAPER LOWERED BY ONE LETTER GRADE.
