                                                                    SYLLABUS

 

 

Course description:

 

This course surveys American civilization from 1877 to present.

 

Course objectives:

 

The objectives of this course will address the following college goal:   Students will develop a knowledge of human civilizations and history, as well as the problems of modernity and historical consciousness (see catalogue, p. 13):

 

1.         Students will review the basic chronology of American civilization from 1877 to the present.

 

2.         Students will focus on the major events and problems of American civilization from 1877 to the present.

 

3.         Students will be exposed to some interpretive issues regarding events and problems in American civilization during this period.

 

Textbook:

 

Gary B. Nash, et al.  The American People:  Creating a Nation and a Society.  Vol. II:  From 1865.  Brief third edition.  New York:  Longman, 2000.  A Study Guide and the web site The History Place, are available for students.  Both include sample test questions.

 

Videotapes:

 

Videotapes are available in the bookstore.  An outline matching the videotapes to the textbook is attached to this syllabus.

 

Examinations/Grades:

 

There will be four unit examinations given during the term.  Each of the four unit examinations will be worth 25% of the grade for a total of 100%. 

 

The unit examinations will be scheduled in room 264, 6:00 - 7:00PM, on the following dates:

 

1.  Wednesday, January 30, chs. 17-20, pp. 441-542

 

2.  Wednesday, February 20, chs. 21-23, pp. 543-626

 

3.  Wednesday, March 20, chs. 24-27, pp. 627-744

 

4.  Wednesday, April 10, chs. 28-30, pp. 745-839

 

Students who prefer a daytime alternative, may take the unit examinations in room

264, 10:30AM-12:00PM on the following dates:

 

1.  Thursday January 31, chs. 17-20, pp. 441-542

 

2.  Thursday, February 21, chs. 21-23, pp. 543-626

 

3.  Thursday, March 21, chs. 24-27, pp. 627-744

 

4.  Thursday, April 11 chs. 28-30, pp. 745-839

 

At the end of the term, number grades will be converted into letter grades as follows:  96-100 = A; 91-95 = A-; 87-90 = B+; 84-86 = B; 81-83 = B-; 77-80 = C+; 74-76 = C; 71-73 = C-; 67-70 = D+; 64-66 = D; 61-63 = D-; 60 and under = F.

 

Orientation/Review meetings:

 

The orientation meeting has been scheduled for Monday, January 7, 2002, at 6:00 PM.  On the Wednesdays before the unit examinations (1/23, 2/13, 3/13, 4/3) students are encouraged to attend review meetings to be held in room 264 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.  Essay questions, some of which will be used in the unit examinations, will be made available to students.  To encourage students to participate in the orientation and review meetings, 5 points per meeting will be added to the students' unit examination grades, for a maximum of 25 points, at the end of the semester.
