SYLLABUS FOR COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY

Course Time:   Thursday  6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

 

Course Description:

Study of basic color theory and its relationship to photographic film and paper make up the content of this course. Also covered are the discussion of the experimentation with various color films and their related sensitivities to light and the study of processing controls and techniques through processing and printing of exposed films in the laboratory. There is one hour lecture with three hours laboratory.

Statement of Plagiarism:

If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter up for judicial review. The maximum penalty for any form of academic dishonesty is dismissal from the College. Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reason(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. Written request for withdrawal must be received by the Registrar by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be mailed to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accept or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indicate why the withdrawal is disallowed. Note: Degree Completion Division (DCD) students should consult the DCD Student Handbook for information on DCD withdrawals.

 

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a

course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" grade for the course (see

Refund Schedule).

 

 

Class Policy on Attendance: Class Attendance: Attending class is very important in order to gain the full benefit of photography instruction and direction. Therefore, a student missing three classes or more will be subject to a failing grade.

 

Class Policy on Electronic Devices: All electronic devices (Cell phones, beepers, pagers ..etc.) are to be turned off during class.

 

Class Policy For Assignments: Assignments that are handed in late will receive a lower grade.

 

Course Objectives:

Students in this course will:

 

 

·         Gain practical experience in the area of 35mm photography

·         Experience in color film emulsion and chemistry

·         Experience in color film processing, projection printing

·         Learn color theory

·         Learn composition and techniques for successful photography

 

 Assessment:

Exams (Midterm, Final, Quizzes)   1 exam                                            25% of grade

Class participation/collaboration/attendance/assignments,

Class presentation and assessment instruments                                   75%   of grade

(6) 8x10 prints

 

Grading Policy:  75% will be actual work and improvement in the course (evaluated in critiques, final project)  25% quiz and test.

 

ASSIGNMENTS:

Students will be required to shoot a minimum of 6 rolls of color film. At critiques students must submit contact sheets, work prints and final prints. Students may not submit more than one print of the same subject for the final.

                                                                       

Class  One:    Introduction

May 2             Discussion of color photography

                       Assignment: Read Chapter 10, Shoot one roll of film.

                       Chapter  10  Color

 

Class Two:    Discussion of  film types and applications, color theory

 May  9           Assignment:  Shoot one roll of color film for next week. Bring film and paper next         

                       week.

 

 

 

Class Three:    (Process Film)  Demonstration on projection printing and contact

May 16              printing. Discussion on filters, basic manipulations, paper and things you

                          might run into. and bring the paper and negatives to print with for class four.

 

Class Four:      Class Lab,  Film Processing and Projection Printing.

Class Five:       Class Lab, Film Processing and Projection Printing.

Class Six:        Critique of all work.  Discussion - Problems, Tips, etc.

NOTE: Your presence at the critiques are essential. Students are expected to shoot at least eight rolls of color film in this class.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Materials needed for class:

Camera: Manual 35mm camera

Color Film:  Your Choice of Brand Name  and ASA

Color Paper:  Kodak  Ektacolor  Supra 2  Color  Paper  (Must be kept refrigerated)

                        Photographic paper is available in quantities of 25, 100 or 250 sheets.

                        Needed for this class is 8x10 paper. Negative Sleeves

OPTIONAL: Dust control equipment: compressed air, softbrush, or anti static cloth.
