COURSE DESCRIPTION:        The teacher candidate will examine and compare theoretical perspectives that have influenced curriculum development in the United States and other countries.  These perspectives will be used to analyze curricula and make informed choices when planning instruction, selecting instructional materials and assessing individual and group progress.  Field experience required.

 

PRE-REQUISITES:  ED 100, ED 200, ED 300, ED 311

 

PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE:              The teacher candidate will demonstrate his/her understanding and reflections about the following:

 

RELATED INTASC PRINCIPLES:

#1:            The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry and the structures of the discipline(s) he/she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.

#2:            The teacher understands how children learn and develop, and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal development.

#3:            The teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners.

#4:            The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students’ development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.

#5:            The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation.

#6:            The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.

#7:            The teacher plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, the community and curriculum goals.

#8:            The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner.

#9:            The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his/her choices and actions on others…and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.

#10:            The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents and agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning and well-being.

ATTENDANCE:             Attendance is mandatory.  Student missing more than two classes                                      may not pass the course.  More than 2 absences will result inl lowering of  final grade by one letter grade.

 

 

                                               

ASSIGNMENTS:              These assignments are due as scheduled.  There will be no        substitutions.

            Assignment #1:     Videotape Discussion, 15 pts. Due Nov. 26  Discuss your feelings as to how/why this event in America  impacted curriculum development.

 

             Assignment #2      Article Review  20 pts. Due Dec. 2  Prepare a 2 page summary/review of a provided article.  The first page is a summary of the key concepts discussed in the article, and the second page is the student’s reflection/reaction to the reading.

 

              Assignment #3      OBSERVATION  (curriculum director, curriculum meeting, teacher) 40 pts. Due  December 16 Students are to observe an elementary  classroom (choose 1 content area.)  Students must provide written verification of the time and date of their verification.  Students are to write a two-page paper  summarizing their observation.  Included within this paper should be the following:

Classroom observation Guidelines provided to you.  10 pts.

Classroom Observation Form of CCSJ and Lesson Plan Evaluation Form of CCSJ  10pts.

1 page summary of the lesson plan – focus on the content area and delivery.  10 pts.

The final page should focus on your reaction to the lesson, reflect on strengths/weaknesses, would you have done something different.

 

 

               Assignment #4  Case Study PARENTS SEEK TO DISMANTLE TRACKING SYSTEM 35  pts.  Due  December 2  Answer the questions attached to the case study.

 

                Assignment #5 Case Study  AN ADVOCATE FOR LONGER SCHOOL DAYS., 35 pts. Due December  9  Answer the questions attached to the case study.

            Assignment#6 Lesson Plan Presentations 40 pts. Due Dec. 11, 12  Students are to select a content area and utilize an appropriate strategy designed to increase students’ comprehension.  Students are to create:

                             A lesson plan with state standards, objec tives, goals, description of students, materials needed, lesson procedures and assessment.  Use the attached Lesson Plan form.  20 pts.

                             Students will be expected to explain and present their lesson to the class, including information on the procedures they would follow if presenting this lesson to a real class; should be 15 minutes in length.  20 pts

 

             Assignment #7 Class Final 60 pts. Dec. 12

 

             Assignment #8 Book Discussion. 20 pts.  Compare the videotape  and  book.  Compare and contrast in difference and similarity.  Reflect upon the two-your feelings.  Due Dec. 12 as part of class final.

                        B  240 – 255 pts.

 

                        C  219 - 239 pts.

 

                        D  200 - 219 pts.
