Course Description:

This capstone course is designed to present an organized and integrated approach to strategic management and business policy.  Decision-making aids and tools are utilized in the process.  A broad spectrum of problems will be presented to students for study and for solving.

 

Prerequisites:  This course must be taken in the student’s last semester.

 

Learning Outcomes/ Competencies:

Students in this course will:

 

·        Develop the capacity to think strategically about a company, its present business position, its long-term direction, its resources and competitive capabilities, the caliber of its strategy, and its opportunities for gaining sustainable competitive advantage.

·        Build their skills in conducting strategic analysis in a variety of industries and competitive situations and, especially, to provide you with a stronger understanding of the competitive challenges of a global market environment.

·        Acquire hands-on experience in crafting business strategy, reasoning carefully about strategic options, using what-if analysis to evaluate action alternatives, and making sound strategic decisions.

·        Learn the managerial tasks associated with implementing and executing company strategies, understand the range of actions managers can take to promote competent strategy execution, and attain confidence in being able to function effectively as part of a company’s strategy-implementing team.

·        Integrate the knowledge gained in earlier core courses in the business curriculum and demonstrate why the different parts of a business need to be managed in strategic harmony for the organization to operate in winning fashion.

·        Develop their powers of managerial judgment, learn how to assess business risk, and improve their  ability to make sound decisions and achieve effective outcomes.

·         Understand the importance of exemplary ethical principles, sound personal and company values, and socially responsible management practices.

Class Policy for Assignments:

Students will be required to write one short paper on their personal management philosophies.

 

Students will submit written case analyses. 

 

Students will be required to give a fifteen-minute presentation at the end of the semester on a business topic.

Center for Academic Excellence:

Statement of Plagiarism:

Citation Guidelines:

Calumet College of St. Joseph adheres to citation guidelines as prescribed by the particular discipline (i.e., MLA, APA, and Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian.).  All of these guidelines are available in the Calumet College of St. Joseph library or bookstore.  These texts outline how to cite references from a variety of sources, including electronic media.

 

Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reason(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must receive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be mailed to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accept or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indicate why the withdrawal is disallowed.

 

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).
