Instructor Background: M.S. in Management form National Louis University, B.A. in Family Studies and Sociology from St. Xavier University, Graduate of Northwestern University School of Staff and Command, Graduate Certificate in Training and Development from St. Xavier University.  Twenty-three years with Chicago Police Department, currently assigned as Captain.                                                                                                                      

Course Time: Morning session-0800 –1200 hrs.  at  IIT Facility   Evening session-6:00 P.M. until 10:00

 

Course Description: This class has an interactive format   which allows the students to interact with a diverse selection o f experienced, high-ranking law enforcement officials who have succeeded in their careers.  The students compose a series of questions that are provided to the guest speakers in advance.  Drawing on the knowledge gained through-out the program; the students analyze each speaker’s answers and relate these to the various management styles.  The goal is for the student to learn from the experience of those who have succeeded, and relate theory to reality when it comes to management styles.

 

Prerequisites:  enrollment in the LEM Program

 

Learning Outcomes/ Competencies:

Students in this course will:

      • Identify meaningful questions to pose to the guest-speakers.
      • Relate the responses to management theory
      • Analyze the management style of the guest speaker
      • Identify what traits the speaker possesses that led to success
      • Compare the various styles of the speakers

Learning Strategies: The format is an interactive question and answers session and group discussion.

Class Policy for Assignments:   Because  there is no text book or written materials for this class, it is imperative for students to be present for each speaker.  The students are required to submit a 2-page double-spaced paper, using standard margins, within one-week after the guest-speaker appears.  The paper can either be e-mailed to the instructor or brought to class the next session.  If the paper is e-mailed, the instructor will send back confirmation of receipt.  It is up to the students to ensure their assignments have been received.  Five points will be deducted for papers received after the one-week due date.  Points will also be deducted for incorrect margins or spacing, and   papers that are not spell-checked and grammar-checked.  If you need help in these areas, it is advised you have someone look over your paper before you hand it in.  A 3-5 page final paper is required at the end of the session that requires the student to seek out and compare two leaders that they have had experience working for.  The students can use the class-generated questions or pose individual questions tailored for the speaker.

Class Policy on Attendance: It is a serious matter when a student misses even one session due to the accelerated format of the program.  If the student misses more than one session, the student is required to withdraw form the module by contacting the Academic Advisor and their instructor.
