Experience-       Director of Healthcare Management program, Calumet College.

                        Twenty years of experience in clinical healthcare and healthcare management.

                        Research interests; the transition of clinicians into managers

 

                       

Course Description: Like no other time in history, healthcare managers must demonstrate and exercise leadership skills. Students will apply historical and contemporary models of leadership to the healthcare environment.  Personal and team values will be investigated.  Emphasis will be placed on the development of leadership abilities both personally and corporately.

Learning Outcomes/Competencies:

Students in this course will:

 

·         Understand basic concepts of leadership models

·         Apply leadership principles to personal values and team interactions

·         Distinguish differences between organizations with a strong core of leadership values from those with a lacking leadership structure

·         Compare their current understanding of leadership and set goals for their own leadership plan

·         Analyze leadership functions in specific healthcare situations

Supplemental articles, case studies and various materials

 

 

Learning Strategies:  Students will develop an understanding of Organizational Leadership through class discussion, team projects, and exams. Recommend weekly supplemental reading of the magazine, Modern Healthcare. Access via the website is free and you may register at modernhealthcare.com.

Class Policy for Assignments:

All assignments must be typewritten.

All team presentations should use Powerpoint.

Class Policy on Attendance:

It is a serious matter when a student misses even one session due to the accelerated format of the program.  The student needs to contact the instructor when class time is missed. If the student misses more than fours hours of class time, the student is required to withdraw form the module by contacting the Academic Advisor and their instructor.

 

Class Policy on Electronic Devices: (Cell phones, Beepers, Pagers…etc.)

Due to the disruptive nature of cell phones, pagers, etc., it is requested that these devices be deactivated during class sessions, exception for emergencies communicated in advance to the instructor.

 

Class Participation:  Is vital to the learning process.  Students will be prepared to discuss the assigned material.  Class participation will affect the student’s final grade.

Citation Guidelines: Calumet College of St. Joseph adheres to citation guidelines as prescribed by the particular discipline (i.e., MLA, APA, Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian.).  All of these guidelines are available in the Calumet College of St. Joseph library or bookstore.  These texts outline how to cite references from a variety of sources, including electronic media.
