Course Description:  The Windows XP user interface is explored with respect to its functions and capabilities. Students will learn how to customize the operating system and software and use various operating system features and programs.

Prerequisites:  CIS 115

Textbooks:

Microsoft Windows XP Comprehensive Concept and Techniques, Shelly, Cashman and Forsythe, Course Technology, Cambridge, MA 2003. (ISBN 0-7895-6532-3)

Learning Strategies:  This is a terms and concepts course. You are expected to have read the chapter in the book that will be discussed before coming to class. The homework assignments prepare you for the tests. The Learn It Online section at the back of each project contains exercises that help you become familiar with the terminology and concepts. You should use them to help you study. The tests are closed book and closed notes. You will, however, be able to use the computer for the exams. Since this course does not cover the Internet, anyone found using Internet Explorer or any other Internet browser during an exam will receive an F for that exam. This is to prevent you from looking up the answers to test questions on the Internet.

A short research paper (one or two pages) will be turned in on the last week of classes. Topics must be approved in advance by the instructor. You will choose a topic related to some feature, function, capability or component of the Windows operating system. Your paper should describe the feature, function, capability, or component, explain when or why you might use it, describe some of the most frequently used parameters or settings, and give an example of its use. If you follow the outline described in the previous sentence, there is no reason why you should not get an A on the research paper.

Class Policy for Assignments: Course work will follow the format in the textbook. One or two projects will be assigned each week. A homework assignment based on the projects will be completed and turned in the following week. Late homework and/or assignments will be marked 50% off after being graded.

Class Policy on Attendance: Attendance will be taken each meeting for administrative and grading purposes. You are expected to attend every class.  You are responsible for any material you miss.  Make-up exams will be given only if prior arrangements are made with the instructor. The instructor reserves the right to change these policies in extreme circumstances.

Class Policy on Electronic Devices: Please try to keep interruptions to a minimum. Turn cell phones and pagers off or to non-audio notification.

Center for Academic Excellence:

Tutoring assistance is free to all students of Calumet College of St. Joseph. Call the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE), to make an appointment at 473-4287. The Center has experienced and well-trained tutors in most subject areas to help students who are struggling in a course or who are doing well and would like to do better. Regular weekly tutoring sessions are likely to improve your grade.

Statement of Plagiarism:

If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter up for judicial review. The maximum penalty for any form of academic dishonesty is dismissal from the College. The procedures for judicial review are listed under the section of CCSJ handbook that addresses student grievances.

Citation Guidelines:

Calumet College of St. Joseph adheres to citation guidelines as prescribed by the particular discipline (i.e., MLA, APA, and Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian.).  All of these guidelines are available in the Calumet College of St. Joseph library or bookstore.  These texts outline how to cite references from a variety of sources, including electronic media.

Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reason(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must receive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be mailed to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. The request is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accept or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indicate why the withdrawal is disallowed. An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).
