Course Location:  Whiting, Room 415

 

Course Description: In a small group setting, students will examine the various leadership roles occupied by healthcare managers.  Students will complete a Professional Portfolio; a comprehensive document detailing a student’s academic, personal and professional accomplishments as part of this course.  Students will also explore career interests and leadership development in the Healthcare Management field.    

 

Prerequisites:  None

 

Textbooks:  Tyler’s Guide, The Healthcare Executive’s Job Search, 1998, J. Larry Tyler, American College of Healthcare Executives, Second Edition.

The Ten Natural Laws of Successful Time and Life Management, Smith, Hyrum, Warner Books

 

Statement of Plagiarism:

If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter up for judicial review. The maximum penalty for any form of academic dishonesty is dismissal from the College. The procedures for judicial review are listed under the section of CCSJ handbook that addresses student grievances. All papers over five pages in length are to be submitted electronically.  The college will screen them with the contracted system, turnitin.com.

Citation Guidelines:

Calumet College of St. Joseph adheres to citation guidelines as prescribed by the particular discipline (i.e., MLA, APA, and Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian.).  All of these guidelines are available in the Calumet College of St. Joseph library or bookstore.  These texts outline how to cite references from a variety of sources, including electronic media.

 

Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

Refer to the Degree Completion portion of the student handbook for the withdrawal policy.  All withdrawals are processed through your academic advisor. 

 

Class Policy on Attendance:

Students are expected to attend all class sessions.  If a student must miss a class session they are expected to contact the instructor prior to the class session.  If a student misses more than one four-hour class session, they will be administratively withdrawn from that class. 

 

Class Policy on Tardiness:

Students need to be prepared to begin class at 6:00 p.m. and are expected to remain the duration.  Tardiness and early releases impair learning and distracts other students as well as the instructor.  Situations that will require an early release or tardiness should be discussed with the instructor prior to class.  Unusual circumstances may be addressed with the Program Director.

 

Class Policy on Electronic Devices:

Due to the disruptive nature of cell phones, pagers and the like, it is requested that these devices be deactivated during class sessions.  If the student is “on-call”, please communicate this in advance with the instructor so that an exception may be made.

 

Class Policy For Assignments:

Students will be given ample time to work on their assignments.  All assignments are to be turned in at the end of the class period they are due.  THE INSTRUCTOR MOST APPROVE LATE ASSIGNMENTS. 

 

Course Objectives:

At the completion of the course, the student will be able to:

 

  • Submit a professional portfolio, which will include; a detailed record of academic accomplishments, selected assignments, and samples of writing and presentation projects.
  • Provide a record of professional experiences and other documentation displaying readiness for entry into a healthcare management role. 
  • Develop a personal career plan that outlines specific strategies for professional, academic, and personal development.             
  • Develop a personal vision/mission statement in order to understand what their purpose is by articulating who they are, what they are about, and what they value.
  • Provide a detailed location analysis choosing two environments in the healthcare field of where they can practice healthcare management.

  • Teaching strategies include various projects and exercises in class, group discussion, and observation of various leadership roles in healthcare management.

Format for Written Assignments:

Students will adhere to the American Psychological Association Guidelines (APA) style for all papers.

Description of Assignments:

 

  • Skill Identification, Goal Setting, and Accomplishment Assignment:

Students are expected to complete a handout given to them by the instructor.  This is to be handed in along with a journal entry answering the questions from the goal setting exercise.  This journal entry should be typed out and double-spaced. 

 

  • Updated Resume and Cover Letter:

Each student must turn in an updated resume along with a sample cover letter. 

 

  • Professional Portfolio:

Each student will submit a professional portfolio displaying ten artifacts such as academic accomplishments, selected assignments, license/certifications, awards, letters of recommendation, formal evaluations of your work and samples of writing and presentation projects. The portfolio should contain a summary and table of contents with tabs for each section.  It can be placed in a three ring binder with sheet protectors.  The instructor will be giving each student a handout with information in order to complete this project.

 

 

  • Detailed Location Analysis Paper/Presentation:

Students are to pick two environments in healthcare and write up a detailed location analysis of where they can practice healthcare management.  It should be a typed 4 page double-spaced paper including the process of what they did, who they talked to if anyone, salary and what they would be expected to do in that healthcare role (job description).  Each area of healthcare that the student details should be 2 pages long.  Each student will also be expected to give a five to ten minute oral presentation of his or her detailed location analysis findings to the class. 

 

  • Personal Mission/Vision Statement Paper:

Each student will write and develop a personal mission/vision statement.  This well-defined personal mission statement will focus on what you want to be, and to do, as well as on the values or principles upon which being and doing are based.  It should be a reflective paper integrating the principle what do I do now that I have this Bachelor’s in Healthcare Management Degree?  The paper should also demonstrate the process of developing this personal mission/vision statement.  The instructor during the class will provide a handout to assist with completing this assignment.  It should be a typed 5 to 7-page double-spaced paper. 

 

  • Current Event Healthcare Management Articles:

Each student will be expected to present one current event article focused on professional/career related jobs in healthcare management. 

 

  • Class Participation:

Each student should actively participate in class discussion as well as be punctual for each class meeting time.
