Formal Presentation

HCM 427

Use the final written cases from HCM 426 as a starting point for the final oral presentation of the case.

1.                  Limit presentation time to 15 minutes.  Allow up to another 5 minutes for questions and answers.

2.                  At this level of presentation, the persuasive method is expected.  You are trying to help the audience understand your logic and accept your recommendations.

3.                  Analyze the audience.  Determine who your audience will be.  Do an audience analysis.

4.                  Consider the type of appeal; ethical, emotional, logical

5.                  Use the understanding you have gained from the case.  You are now the expert in this area!

6.                  Organize your presentation.

Introduction – Strong beginning.  Get their attention and gain rapport, but most importantly introduce the central message.

Body – Bulk of information needed.  Link one idea to another smoothly.

Conclusions – Brief summary.  No new info.  Ask audience to take an action.  Tie conclusion back into the Intro.

7.                  Visual aids.  Real objects, models, flip charts, handouts, white board, slides, video, overheads, power point.  Use several effectively.

8.                  Delivery of presentation – practice, practice, practice.  Use the “extemporaneous approach”

Establish credibility – enthusiasm, confidence, expertise

Nonverbal communication –

Eye contact

Interaction with audience (where applicable)

9.         Handling questions and answers
