Instructor Background: Mr. Hernandez was awarded a B.A. in Criminal Justice at Lewis University and a MPA Degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He has taught various subjects at the CPD Training Division and was employed by that Department for 35 years. He formerly served the Chicago Police Department as a Deputy Chief in the Detective Division, an Assistant Deputy Superintendent, Deputy Chief of Patrol, Detective Division Commander, and Patrol Division Commander.

 

Course Description: The course defines the responsibilities of police officers and the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by law enforcement officials.  The class will enable the student to think critically and constructively on pressing issues in our contemporary society, and to challenge his/her own personal beliefs and the social context from which these beliefs occur.

 

Learning Outcomes/ Competencies:

Students in this course will:

 

·         Develop critical thinking skills that are fundamental in solving ethical dilemmas as they occur within the criminal justice system.

·         Demonstrate and practice the basic principles of ethical considerations required to confront decisions involving discretion, force, and due process required of people making enlightened moral judgments.

·          Be able, as criminal justice professionals, to recognize the ethical consequences of various actions, and, the moral principles involved as they apply to leadership skills.

·         Understand how to apply the major ethical systems to ethical dilemmas.

Class Policy for Assignments:  Written assignments must be completed and delivered to the Instructor on the due date. Should a student fail to complete and deliver an assignment in a timely manner, the grade may be lowered. More information concerning the written assignments will be forthcoming.

Class Policy on Attendance: It is a serious matter when a student misses even one session due to the accelerated format of the program.  If the student misses more than one session, the student is required to withdraw form the module by contacting the Academic Advisor and their instructor.

Class Participation: Class participation is vital to the learning process.  Students will be prepared to discuss the assigned material.  Class participation may affect the student’s final grade.
