Course Time: 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at IIT Research Institute

         6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Chicago Police Education & Training Center

Instructor Background: Robert R. Johnson was awarded an A.A.S. in Law Enforcement at Chicago City Colleges, a B.A. in Philosophy at Saint Xavier University and an M.A. in Criminal Justice Counseling at Saint Xavier University.  He has taught at Northwestern University in the Traffic Safety Division and is currently teaching at Calumet College of Saint Joseph.  Mr. Johnson is the author of “Captain” a bi-monthly feature in Law & Order magazine.  With the Chicago Police Department for 35 years, he is currently a Captain assigned as a watch commander in the Deering District. 

 

Eloise Carnevale was awarded the B.A. in Criminal Justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago and M.Sc. in Urban Studies at Loyola University (Chicago).  She currently teaches various subjects in Law Enforcement at Calumet College of Saint Joseph and previously at Northwestern University in the Traffic Safety Division.  With the City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department for 35 years, she is currently a Detective assigned to Detective Division Administration.

 

Course Description: The course is designed to present an overview of the role of the police supervisor.  Students will examine the fifteen responsibilities of a police supervisor.

 

Prerequisites: None

Learning Outcomes/ Competencies:

Students in this course will: achieve an understanding that we begin at an early age supervising ourselves and that mastery of the fifteen responsibilities of supervision for ourselves presents a strong likelihood that we will be more efficient and effective supervisors of others. 

 

Textbooks: Supervising Police Personnel.  WHISENAND, Paul M., 5th edition.  Prentice Hall, 2004.

 

Learning Strategies: There will be group discussions, collaborative learning, lecturing, film presentations on leadership, individual presentations, quizzes, and a written paper.

 

Assessment:

Exams: four quizzes                                                                      40% of grade

Class participation/collaboration/attendance/assignments         10% of grade

Class presentation                                                                         20% of grade

Final Paper                                                                                     30% of grade


 

Class Policy for Assignments: Students will be given ample time to work on their assignments.  All assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the class period they are due.  Late assignments will be accepted, but grade deductions may be assessed.

Class Policy on Attendance: It is a serious matter when a student misses even one session due to the accelerated format of the program.  If the student misses more than one session, the student is required to withdraw form the module by contacting the Academic Advisor and their instructor.

 

Course Outline:

 

Week One: Overview of class requirements, discussion of chapters 1,2,3, lecture on foundation for the course and discussion about pre-conceived notions of effective leadership and supervision.

Week Two: Lecture and discussion of Chapters 4,5,6.  Film on leadership.  Individual presentations.


Week Three: Lecture and discussion of Chapters 7,8,9.  Film on leadership.  Individual presentations.

Week Four: Lecture and discussion of Chapters 10,11,12.  Film on leadership.  Individual presentations.

Week Five: Lecture and discussion of Chapters 13,14,15.  Film on leadership.  Individual presentations.  Submission of final paper.

 

Class Participation: is vital to the learning process.  Students will be prepared to discuss the assigned material.  Class participation may affect the student’s final grade.
