Course description: This course traces international immigration to the United States from all regions of the world. This course will describe the causes of immigration, immigrant occupations, immigrant social institutions, and immigrant adjustment to American life.
Prerequisites: HST 230-240; cross-listed SSC 324
Learning Outcomes/Competencies:
The objectives of this course will address the following Social Sciences objective: Understand the institutions, systems, and cultures of the United States and other countries (see catalog).
Students in this course will:
1.Review the basic chronology of immigration to America from colonial times to the present.
2.Focus on the major events and problems of immigration to America from colonial times to the present.
3.Become familiar with some interpretive issues regarding events and problems in immigration to America during this period.
4.Do hands-on research in the history of immigration to the United States. Research projects will be assigned by the instructor.

Learning Strategies: This course will be based on discussions of assigned textbook readings and several research projects.
Assessment:
1. Attendance and participation in discussions: 20% of grade
2. Two typewritten page summary of each of the textbook chapters: 30% of grade
3. Two minor research projects: 10% each for a total of 20% of grade
4. Major research project (25 double-spaced typewritten pages): 30% of grade
Class Policy for Assignments: Students should stay current with the textbook readings assigned in the course outline and submit chapter summaries and accomplish research projects on time.
Grading Scale:
A: 96-100; A-: 91-95; B+: 87-90; B: 84-86; B-: 81-83; C+: 77-80; C: 74-76; C-: 71-73; D+: 67-70; D: 64-66; D-: 61-63; F: 60 and below.
Class Policy on Attendance: Students will lose one point for each missed session, unless absent for appropriate personal and documented medical reasons. Excused absences will be limited to three session hours during the semester.
Class Policy on Electronic Devices: Students must turn off all electronic devices during the sessions. Computers and recorders are allowed if used for session purposes.

All of these guidelines are available in the Calumet College of St. Joseph library or bookstore. These texts outline how to cite references from a variety of sources, including electronic media.
Withdrawal from Classes Policy:
After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reason(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must receive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be mailed to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accept or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indicate why the withdrawal is disallowed.
An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).
