Course Time:  Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10:00-6:00

 

Course Description: The student will also explore Group Work theory and examine the various stages of group development and their role as group leader.  Included in the course will be participation in a virtual classroom discussion as well as forums on the discussion board in Blackboard.  The skills and ethics of an doing e-therapy will also be explored.

 

Prerequisites:  None

 

Learning Outcomes/Competencies: At the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1.       Identify the different phases of group work and the responsibility of the group leader in each phase as assessed in the final exam;

 

2.       Identify the different type of group members and the impact of each type on the group process as assessed through an on-going group simulation exercise;

 

3.       Describe the experience of participating in a group as both a group member and a group leader as assessed through the process of group role-playing and virtual classroom participation.

 

4.       Identify the various models of group counseling including e-therapy counseling.

Assessments

 

Formative Assessment: 

 

Class Exercises and in-class role-plays, posting on the Discussion Board and participation in the virtual classroom discussion are indicators of students' participation in class.  Participation is evaluated as part of the final grade.  However, the primary purpose of these exercises is to provide evidence of how well students are progressing toward mastery of course outcomes.

 

Summative Assessment:

 

Peer and teach evaluation of class exercises, Blackboard Forum Discussion and the Final Take-Home Exam provide evidence of the extent to which students have mastered the learning outcomes by the end of the course.

 

Class Policy for Assignments: 

 

Specific instructions will be given for all written assignments.  All assignments are due on the designated due date unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor.

 

Grading Scale:

 

A Range: Students who demonstrate a high-level of mastery of the competencies assessed in the peer evaluation of class participation, Blackboard Forum Discussion questions and the Final Take-Home Exam will earn a grade in the A range.

 

B Range: Students who demonstrate a satisfactory level of mastery of the competencies assessed in the peer evaluation of class participation, Blackboard Forum Discussion questions and the Final Take-Home Exam will earn a grade in the B range.

 

C Range: Students who demonstrate a minimum level of mastery of the competencies assessed in the peer evaluation of class participation, Blackboard Forum Discussion questions and the Final Take-Home Exam will earn a grade in the C range.

 

D Range: Students who fail to demonstrate a minimum level of the assessed competencies or fail to complete one of the Summative Assessments will earn a grade in the D range.

 

F:  Students who fail to complete the minimum requirements for class participation and any one of the summative assessments will receive a grade of F.

 

Class Policy on Attendance: Attendance at all classes is required.  Students may not make-up any assessment given in any class unless they have notified the Instructor prior to the missed class.

 

Class Policy on Electronic Devices: All electronic devices are to be turned off during class time unless there is a medical or family emergency.

Statement of Plagiarism:

If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter up for judicial review. The maximum penalty for any form of academic dishonesty is dismissal from the College. Citation Guidelines:

Calumet College of St. Joseph adheres to citation guidelines as prescribed by the particular discipline (i.e., MLA, APA, and Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian.).  All of these guidelines are available in the Calumet College of St. Joseph library or bookstore.  These texts outline how to cite references from a variety of sources, including electronic media.

 

Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reason(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. Written request for withdrawal must be received by the Registrar by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be mailed to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accept or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indicate why the withdrawal is disallowed. Note: Degree Completion Division (DCD) students should consult the DCD Student Handbook for information on DCD withdrawals.

 

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).
