Course Description: This course is designed to address the= legal issues in public safety management. Emphasis is placed on search, seizure, arrest and the use of force.<= o:p>

Learning Outcomes/Competencies:

1. = Students in this course will broaden t= heir knowledge of criminal procedure, particularly case law related to arrest, search and seizure, and civil liability statutes and court decisions relate= d to municipal and individual liability.

2. = Students will formulate a research que= stion and use the criminal justice abstracts to answer that question.<= /span>

3. = Students will present an oral presenta= tion in which they will role-play the position of watch commander and or legal advisor in a roll call training exercise.

Assessment: = ; Students will be given an examination, which will include short answer questions. The exam will cover the reading assignments and class lecture. Students will research a legal issue and give an oral presentation i= n a simulated roll call training exercise.

Class Policy for Assignments: Students will be required to have = completed your assignments prior to coming to class.= Students will be given reading assignments for each class. It is imperative that students are prepared for class. In order = to achieve an A in this class, students will need to have all assignments comp= leted before coming to class.

Class Po= licy on Attendance: = It is a serious matter when a student = misses even one session due to the accelerated format of the program. If the student misses more than one session, the student is required to withdraw from the module by contacting = the Academic Advisor and their instructor.

Class Participation: Class participation is vital to the learning process. Students mu= st be prepared to discuss the assigned material.= Class participation will affect the student’s final grade.

Tutoring Center:

The Tutoring Center is dedicated to supporting Calumet College of St. Joseph students.&nb= sp; Students work with tutors to develop course competencies and study skills such as time management, test preparation, and note taking. Written assignments associ= ated with the Calumet College of St. Joseph's Public Safety Management prog= ram will utilize the most recent APA guidelines. Public Safety Management program students should first follow the APA guidelines within their PSM Undergraduate Writing Manual for most format concerns. It should be noted that when the PSM Undergraduate Writing Manual is silent to a specific format instance, students should then refer to= the APA Publication Manual for clar= ification concerning those particular formatting and/or citation guidelines= .

Withdrawal from Classes Po= licy:

After the last day for cla= ss changes has passed (see College calendar), students may withdraw from a cou= rse in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conduc= ting the course. A written request detailing the reason(s) for the withdrawal mu= st be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must receive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be mailed to the Registrar= or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are to make note of = the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request is forwarded to = the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accept or deny the request. If= the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indicate why the withdrawal is disallowed.

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" gra= de for the course (see Refund Schedule).
