Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide a conceptual framework of fundamental knowledge in management thoug= ht functions and processes. Such topics as motivation, leadership, communicati= on and decision-making are included.

Learning Strategies:

Class sessions will consist of a combination of lectures, videos, case studies and interactive discussions. Stud= ents will participate in both group and individual activities.

Class Policy for Assignments:

Written assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of class on the date due.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Late assignments will not be accepted. If you are unable to attend class when an assignment is due you may fax or mail it. All written assignments are requir= ed to be typed, double spaced and printed on one side of the page. Spelling, grammar and language are expected to be correct and presented in a professional business style. Written assignments may consist of= case studies or current events related to the business environment. Two such assignments will be assig= ned during the semester. Typically these will be short papers, two or three pages in length. Students will be given ample notification and time to complete such assignments. The total of all class assignments will be worth 50 points towards your final grade. Failure to turn in ANY written assignment will result in the forfeiture of = ALL written assignment poi= nts.

Class Policy on Attendance:

Attendance is mandatory!<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Each student will begin the semest= er with 50 attendance points towards the final grade. One absence will be permitted with= out consequence. Subsequent absen= ces will result in a 25 point deduction from the attendance points. More than three absences will resu= lt in lowering the final grade by one letter.&nb= sp; To receive attendance credit you must be present for at least one ha= lf the class period (90 minutes). Classes canceled by the school or the profes= sor will have no effect on the student's attendance. record. If class is canceled, the student = will still be responsible for all assignments.&= nbsp; If unable to attend class, a courtesy call to the instructor would be appreciated.

Tardiness

Class begins at 7:00 PM sharp. You are expected to be= ON TIME. If you arrive late (inc= luding exam nights) you will be penalized 5 points for EACH class you arrive at ta= rdy. In fairness, if the instructor is = tardy, you will be awarded 5 points = extra credit.

Texting

ABSOLUTELY NO= TEXTING during class. Each time you are caught texting, 10 points will be deducted = from you point total

Class Participation:

To achieve the full benefit of the course, students must attend all class sessions, complete all reading assignments a= nd participate in class discussions.

“NUTS”

In addition to the text we will be= utilizing the book NUTS. Students will be required to select one business topic from the chapter and write a paragraph or two explaining the topic and how = or why it was important in the book. These weekly assignments may be hand writ= ten or typed. Each week, as time permits, several students will be selected randomly to discuss their topics aloud in class. These assignments will cou= nt towards the participation portion of your final grade (100 points). Students will also be composing a<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> multi page pager based on the book= .

Quizzes:

There wi= ll be five quizzes each worth twenty points (100 points total). All quizzes will be announced befo= rehand and administered at the start of class.&nb= sp; Typically they will consist of twenty questions selected from the days l= ecture material. There will be no ma= ke ups on quizzes.

Examinations:

There wi= ll be two examinations and a final. Each exam will be worth 100 points towards the final grade and will cover approximately five chapters of material. Each exam will consist of 50 - 100 objective questions. From time to time an extra credit = question may be included. Extra credit questions are optional to the student. Make up exams will be consid= ered under extraordinary circumstances. Prior approval must be obtained from the instructor and arranged in advanced. Be advised that mak= e up exams will be a much more difficult version of the original exam and will be worth a maximum of 75 points. No make up exam will be available for the final.

Any stud= ent maintaining an “A” average going into the final will be excused from the final exam.

Tutoring Center:

The Tutoring Center is dedicated to supporting Calumet College of St. Joseph students.&nb= sp; Students work with tutors to develop course competencies and study skills such as time management, test preparation, and note taking. In addition, students are provided= with tutoring support to help pass courses, to improve grade point average, and = to promote continuing education and career advancement. Tutors have a specific charge: to = help students learn how to master specific subject matter and to develop effecti= ve learning skills. Tutoring is = open to all students at Calumet College of St. Joseph at no charge and is availa= ble to support most introductory courses. Statement of Plagiarism:

If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter= up for judicial review. Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students = may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reaso= n(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must rec= eive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be maile= d to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are= to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request= is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accep= t or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indic= ate why the withdrawal is disallowed.

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incu= rs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).

Student Support Services:

Among its other services, the Student Support Services Office guides, counsels and assists students with disabilities. If a student believes that he or she needs a “reasonable accommodation” of some kind because of a physical, psychological, or mental condition (e.g., additional time needed for tests, note taking assistance, special testing arrangements, etc.), he or she should contact t= he Student Support Services Office at 473-4388. Staff there will secure documentation pertinent to the disability and work with faculty and staff, = if necessary, to address the matter.
