: Much of my teaching career has been devoted to helping students learn to wr= ite acceptable academic English that is vital to your success in other college courses and in your future careers or businesses.

Course Descript= ion: English 095 prepares inexperienced writers for successful completion of English 103 through its focus on the basic elements of college writing. An emphasis is placed on writing at the sentence and paragraph level where writers will learn strate= gies for generating ideas, producing text, tracking and correcting error, and recognizing standard written English. Because the course is limited to 15 students, students will receive individualized attention to meet their own specific writing challenges and will be encouraged to reflect on their writ= ing processes. Not applicable toward a degree.

Course Assumptions: English 095 is the first course in the writing sequence at Calumet College and s= erves students who are inexperienced with academic writing and underprepared for = the kinds of writing expected in college. It works as a review for key basic concepts in writing--producing error-free sentences and developing paragrap= hs. Because it is the first part of the first-year writing experience, it prepa= res students for the work done in English 103. Although students will not write formal essays, they will concentrate on producing a great deal of text to practice sustained writing, work through errors, and become familiar with processes of revision.

Learning Outcomes/ Competencies:

The student w= ill recognize and be able to label basic the parts of a sentence, including subjects

and predicates, clauses, and phrases.

The student w= ill apply this knowledge to their own writing to track and correct common error= s

including fragments, comma splices, run-ons, subject-verb agreement and pronouns.

The student w= ill use correctly punctuation marks, including period, comma, and semi-

colon.

The student w= ill write coherent, grammatically correct, and purposeful sentences.=

The student w= ill practice sustained writing.
The student will write paragraphs with topic sentences that express one main idea.
The student will learn writing strategies including, outlining, mapping, brainstorming, and freewriting

for generating examples and details about main ideas.

The student w= ill write paragraphs that develop a main idea through illustration, using an

accumulation of specific details or one extended detail.

The student w= ill reflect on and evaluate his/her individual writing processes.

The student w= ill practice the phases of the writing process: prewriting, writing, re-writing, and

editing.

The student w= ill recognize the conventions of standard written English.

The student w= ill become familiar with sentence and paragraph conventions through samples

from a variety of sources, such as newspaper and magazine articles, online texts, and

student writing.

The student w= ill learn a variety of revision and editing strategies.

In-class competency (1.5 pages):
Working fr= om the same prompt given on the first day of class, you will write a new response.= English Program instructors will use this response, alongside the original diagnost= ic, to determine your level of writing improvement, the problems that still rem= ain, and whether you have met the competencies required for entry into English 1= 03. If you do not pass the competency exam, you will be required to take the co= urse again in the following semester.

Class Policy for Essay Projects: Students who are absent for an in-class writing assignment = will lose 50 points for each missed class.

Late Paper Poli= cy: Assignments more than one week late will receive only half credit.

Class Policy on Attendance:

In accordance w= ith English program policy, any student missing more than NINE (9) hours of cla= ss will receive an F. These nine hours include both excused and unexcused <= /b>absences. Please be aware these hours include birthdays, sport events, illness, work, etc. If a problem arises with your absences, please come and talk to me immediately.

T= ardiness and leaving class early will completely disrupt the work of our small group= . Because we meet only once a week, you need to be present for the entire class perio= d. Missing more than ten minutes of class for any reason (arriving late, leavi= ng early, etc) will count as one-half an absence toward the nine hours of abse= nces you are allotted.

You are respons= ible for obtaining the assignments from the missed class session. Do not come to class unprepared if you were absent.

Class Policy on Electronic or Communication Devices: (cell phones, MP3 players, and social networking websites):

Because our cla= ss time is limited, please turn off all cell phones when you enter the writing lab. Also, do not engage in any social networking websites like Facebook or Myspace during class time. These are not only disruptive to our discussions= and work but also convey a lack of respect for both the community of learners y= ou are surrounded by and the general mission of education. Students who persist in social networking activities after receiving several requests to desist will be removed from the classroom.

Class Participa= tion:

It is essential for you to actively participate in this class. It is only through the sharing of our ideas, interpretations, and understanding of given texts that we can collectively work through and produce a reading of those texts. Language (t= hus reading and writing) is a social activity that only happens because there a= re other people with whom we communicate. During class meetings, you should therefore be prepared to speak meaningfully to whatever issue is under discussion.

A good deal of class time will be given to talking about your work. At times, I will distribute copies of sample student work for you to read and discuss. (This means you should be prepared for the possibility that your written work for= the course will be read by your peers, though not without your permission.) Hea= ring how other readers respond to your own writing can give you a clearer sense = of the variety of ways in which your writing can be interpreted. You will also read each others’ works in small group settings. Looking at other students’ writing will make it possible for you to analyze difference= s in the approaches that writers can take to a subject or a text—such as different habits of reading and writing and assumptions and attitudes towar= ds the content and style of the text. These differences reflect the ways in wh= ich the writers attempt to “make meaning” for others and for themselves. You’ll look at what you and other members of the class ha= ve written and discuss what you sound like on paper in your writing and what alternative approaches you might take in your papers. You will not be looki= ng at the papers to determine if they are “good” or “badR= 21; papers in some absolute sense but rather to determine what they are good fo= r, and how. Copies of papers handed out for discussion in class will usually be kept anonymous to keep the focus of class discussions on what the writing itself does rather than on who did the writing.

Responsibility:

I cannot stre= ss enough the place of responsibility in this course. I am responsible for creating writing opportunities, setting expectations, communicating policie= s, and encouraging you to test out new ideas and new writing strategies. You a= lso have a great deal of responsibility in this course. You must come to class prepared and interested, ready to learn, and be engaged. You must come with= an open mind and appropriate attitude. I will expect you to be responsible for talking to me about missed classes or any other concerns you have.

Among its other services, the Student Support Services Office guides, counsels and assists students with disabilities. If a student believes that he or she ne= eds a “reasonable accommodation” of some kind because of a physical, psychological, or mental condition (e.g., additional time needed for tests, note taking assistance, special testing arrangements, etc.), he or she shou= ld contact the Student Support Services Office at 473-4388. Staff there will secure documentation pertinent to the disability and, if necessary, work wi= th faculty and staff to address the matter.

CCSJ Alert= :

Calumet College of St. Joseph utilizes an emergency communications system that transmits messages via text, email, and voice platforms. In the event of an emergency, of weather related closings, or of other incidents, those studen= ts who are registered for the system shall receive incident specific message(s) notifying them of the situation. Statement of Plagiarism:

If an instructo= r or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter up for judicial review. The maximum penalty for any form of academic dishonesty is dismissal from the College. The procedures for judicial review are listed under the section of CCSJ handbook that addresses student grievances.

Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last = day the drop/add a class (see College calendar), students may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reason(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar before the last day of classes = and prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be mailed to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students should make note of the refund schedule when withdra= wing from courses. The request is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accept or deny the request. If the request is honore= d, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indicate why the request is disallowed.

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).=
