Instructor Background: B.A., Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology and Ancient Greek (Bryn Mawr College); M.A. and Ph.D., Classical Art and Archaeology (The University of Michigan); teaching experience in classics, art history, art appreciation, liberal studies, world literature, world civilization, global perspectives (history and literature courses), and basic writing courses.

Course Time and Dates: Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30 – 10 A.M.

Course Description: This course develops a basic understanding of the history of major world cultures. It impa= rts a general chronology of world history and an overview of world geography. It also examines important themes = and trends that affect more than one world civilization. The course provides a crucial over= view of cultures and meetings between cultures that accelerating movement toward= an ever more integrated globe requires.

Prerequisites: None.

Class Policy on Attendance: As a rule, any student missing more than NINE (9) hours of class will receive an F. These nine hours include both excu= sed and unexcused absences. In the event that you must miss more than nine hours of class due to severe extenuating circumstances, please contact me without delay so that we can discuss the situation (which you will be required to document) in person. Classroom Decorum: Please be considerate and respectfu= l at all times. Any student who de= liberately disrupts a class OR who engages in other inappropriate behavior (such as ce= ll phone use, text messaging, or sleeping) will be asked to leave and will be marked absent for the day. Tuesday, September 7	Welcome and introduction. The begin= nings of human culture in the Old Stone Age (Paleolithic period): music, visual arts, religious concepts and rituals, early technology and travel. HOMEWORK: Read Visual History= 12 – 15 (introduction) and 18 – 27 (on the Stone Age).
Thursday, September 9	The birth of civilization in the New Stone Age (Neolithic period): early citi= es, agriculture, practical arts and crafts, and fine arts. HOMEWORK: Study for Quiz #= 1, AND read Visual History 29 – 31 (introduction to the first g= reat civilizations) and 68 (early Indus Valley civilization).
Tuesday, September 14	QUIZ # 1. Societies grow more co= mplex. Early writing systems, urbanizat= ion and urban planning. Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students = may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reaso= n(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must rec= eive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be maile= d to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are= to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request= is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accep= t or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indic= ate why the withdrawal is disallowed.

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incu= rs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).
