Course Description:<= /b> This survey course in contemporary mathematics explores theories and real world<= o:p>

applications in mathematics and presents mathematics as a human endeavor in a historical context. Topics may include: number theory, the re= al number system, problem solving, counting techniques, elementary probability= and statistics, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry.

Leaning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have acquired the skills and knowledge base necessary= to do the following:

§ Recogniz= e and demonstrate precise and correct reasoning.

§ Gain a historical overview of the development of mathematical ideas.

§ Develop = an appreciation of mathematics as a contemporary field of inquiry. =

§ Evaluate= the effectiveness of the mathematical sciences in describing the world.

§ Analyze quantitative information symbolically, graphically, numerically, and verbal= ly for the purpose of solving problems or drawing conclusions.

§ Construct logical arguments in support of mathematical assertions.<= /p>
§ List, de= scribe and distinguish among the various subsets of the Real numbers (Natural, Who= le, Integer, Rational, Irrational).

§ Recogniz= e and construct various number patterns, both classic (e.g. Fibonacci) and modern= .

§ Explain contemporary uses of various mathematical entities (e.g. prime numbers and encryption).

§ Demonstr= ate precision in the use of mathematical symbols (e.g. subscripts).<= /span>

§ Identify= and distinguish among various types of infinite sets, using tools such as one-to-one correspondence.

§ Demonstr= ate various properties of non-Euclidean geometries.

§ Explain = and demonstrate the relationship between the Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio.

§ Demonstr= ate various geometric proofs in the comparison of infinite sets.

§ Demonstrate elementary techniques of counting methods and probability.

Learning Strategies: Group discussions, lecture, lots of practice.&nb= sp; The objective is to promote your understanding of mathematics concep= ts and to enable you how to apply them in a meaningful way. You are encouraged to rely on logi= cal thinking, rather than on memorization.&nbs= p; It is VERY important that you READ the sections of the textbook, STUDY the examples and WORK problems. A= ctive participation in class and utilization of services such as the CCSJ Tuto= ring Center will help ensure your success.

Tests: Several = chapter tests will be given during the term and one comprehensive final exam= during exam week. A number of= quizzes will also be given, each announced in advance. Missed quizzes and assignments cannot be made up. However, the lowest quiz gra= de AND assignment grade will be dropped.

Class Policy for Written Assignments: Since mathematics is a participation spo= rt, written assignments are an integral part of the learning process. Your participation with the assign= ments is crucial to your success. Collecting assignments and giving points for them are meant to serve= as an incentive. On written assi= gnments, problems should be numbered and adequate work shown for each, with answers clearly marked. Correct an= swers without accompanying work, where appropriate, will not be given credit.= To receive full credit, work sh= ould be neat, organized and complete, and should include the student's name, date and class on each page. = DO NOT SKIP ANY PROBLEMS. Be sure to= give yourself enough time to complete the written assignment and to get help= if needed.

Attendance is important and is exp= ected (see "participation sport" message under Assignments, above). You are responsible for all materi= al covered in class, including announcements of assignments and quizzes.   IF YOU MISS CLASS, YOU MUST CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR BY E-MAIL (chutton26@yahoo.com) WITHIN 24 HOURS, TO AVOID= THE ASSESSMENT OF A FIVE (5) POINT PENALTY FOR EACH MISSED CLASS. The instructor is more than willin= g to meet you halfway on this, but remember that there are TWO halves.

Class Policy on Electronic Communication Devices: Cell phon= es, etc. are to be switched off and texting is not allowed. In the event of necessity for answ= ering a cell phone during class, please inform the instructor ahead of time and s= et the device to "vibrate", if possible, and answer it in the hallwa= y.

Tutoring Center: The Tutoring Center is dedicated to supporting Calumet College of St. Joseph students. Students work with tutors to develop course competencies and study skills such as time management, test preparation, and note taking. In addition, students are provided= with tutoring support to help pass courses, to improve grade point average, and = to promote continuing education and career advancement. Tutors have a specific charge: to = help students learn how to master specific subject matter and to develop effecti= ve learning skills. Statement on Plagiarism: If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter= up for judicial review. The maximum penalty for any form of academic dishonest= y is dismissal from the College. Withdrawal from Classes Policy: <= /b>After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students = may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reaso= n(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must rec= eive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be maile= d to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are= to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request= is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accep= t or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indic= ate why the withdrawal is disallowed.

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incu= rs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).

Student Support Services:&nbs= p; Among its other services, the Stude= nt Support Services Office guides, counsels and assists students with disabilities. If a student believes that he or she needs a “reasonable accommodation” of some kind because of a physical, psychological, or mental condition (e.g., additional time needed for tests, note taking assistance, special testing arrangements, etc.), he or she shou= ld contact the Student Support Services Office at 473-4388. Staff there = will secure documentation pertinent to the disability and work with faculty and staff, if necessary, to address the matter.

The “Talking Is Learning” Project

PROJECT DUE DATE: Monday, November 29, 2010

Talking is not teachin= g; listening is not learning.

Listening is teaching; talking is learning.

Overview

Each student is to participate in a research project during the term. Group participation is encouraged,= but not mandatory. A written report (see specifics below) is to be turned in from each student (including an individual report from each participant in a group project= ) on hard copy and an electronic copy (via email). A Microsoft Word® document is preferred. Extra points may be earned by giving an optional presentation of your findings to= the class at some point during the term.

Research on a Topic

Topics

1. Must be approved by the instructor= .

2. Should have some relevance to the = course content.

3. Can come from the topics of the ch= apters of the text, but that is not a requirement.

The Report

EACH STUDENT will submit a report, including those involved in group projects.

Reports will be in hard-copy AND an electronic copy (via e-mail to chutt= on26@yahoo.com).

Your report should contain the following:

1. Your identifying information (Name, class, date) (5%)

2. Name of the topic

3. Listing of sources consulted (at l= east 2 must be internet sources) (25%)

4. A statement IN YOUR OWN WORDS of y= our findings about the topic (35%)

5. A statement IN YOUR OWN WORDS of w= hat you consider to be the relevance for

      the course and/or your own experience about the topic and your findings (35%)

The (optional) Presentation

In team presentations, each student on the team will participate= in the presentation to the class.

Assessment

Points will be awarded according to the percentages listed under each option above. Up to 10% extra = credit will be awarded for giving a presentation in class.
