Instructor Background:=

Dr. Jill A. Miller is a lic= ensed clinical psychologist in both Indiana and Illinois and a member of the Amer= ican Psychological Association. She earned her doctorate from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 1996. Dr. Miller practiced wi= th the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for several years as the drug abuse program coordinator. Presently, she conducts forensic evaluations for federal, and = county offenders and the Lake County Juvenile Court. She provides EAP services, prescree= ning and Fitness for Duty evaluations for several police departments. A lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana, she maintains a private practice in Indiana.

Steven Regni= er has a Masters Degree in Law Enforcement Administration and is currently working towards his Education Doctorate in Organizational Leadership. He has worked= for Chicago Police Department for over 21 years, during which time he has worke= d as a patrol and tactical officer, tactical sergeant and a field lieutenant/wat= ch commander. Mr. Regnier also is the Vice President of the Chicago Police Lieutenants Association and is active in contract negotiations, and grievan= ce proceedings.

Course Description: This course examines crime as a political concern and delves into the conflicting political philosophies and ethical issues that guide our judgments relative to criminal justice issues and policy.

Class Policy for Assignments: Written assignments must be completed and delivered to = the instructor on the due date. L= ate assignments will not be accepted unless the instructor is notified and cons= ents to other arrangements. Assign= ments can be turned in early.

Class Policy on Attendance:=

It is a serious matter when= a student misses even one session due to the accelerated format of the program and weight of the grading structure. If a student misses more= than two sessions, or more than a cumulative total of 7 hours of class time, the student is required to withdraw from the course by contacting the Academic Advisor and their instructor. Also, being on time is important in order to cover the course material. Points will be dedu= cted from attendance and class participation for being more than 5 minutes late.=

Class Policy for Assignment= s:

Written assignments must be completed and delivered to the instructor on the due date or earlier. Late assignments will not be accep= ted unless the instructor is notified and consents to other arrangements.

Format for Written Assignments: All pape= rs will be typed in the 5th edition APA format, (American Psychological Association).

Tutoring Center:

The Tutoring Center is dedicated to supporting Calumet College of St. Joseph students. Statement of Plagiarism:

If an instructor or other C= alumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter up for judicial review. The maximum= penalty for any form of academic dishonesty is dismissal from the College. Citation Guidelines:=

Written assignments associa= ted with the Calumet College of St. Joseph's Public Safety Management prog= ram will utilize the most recent APA guidelines. Public Safety Management program students should first follow the APA guidelines within their PSM Undergraduate Writing Manual for most format concerns. It should= be noted that when the PSM Undergraduate Writing Manual is silent to a specific format instance, students should then refer to the APA Publication Manual for clarifi= cation concerning those particular formatting and/or citation guidelines= .

Withdrawal from Classes Pol= icy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students may withdraw from a cou= rse in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conduc= ting the course. A written request detailing the reason(s) for the withdrawal mu= st be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must receive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be mailed to the Registrar= or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are to make note of = the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request is forwarded to = the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accept or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification o= f official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indicate why the withdrawal is disallowed.

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" gra= de for the course (see Refund Schedule).
