Instructor Background:

Dr. Danny L. McGuire, Jr. is a second generation Chicago Police Off= icer with over 20 years of experience in Law Enforcement. He began his career as= a Cadet Explorer with the Palos Heights Police Department in 1990, later he w= as hired by PHPD as a Community Service Officer. In 1992 he took employment wi= th the Cook County Sheriff’s Department and served with the South Suburb= an Drug Initiative (SSDI) where Danny was assigned to the Northeastern Metropolitan Enforcement Group (NEMEG), which conducted undercover narcotics investigations. In 1996 Danny was hired by the Chicago Police Department wh= ere he has served in the 009^th District, Special Operations Section,= and the Hostage Barricade Terrorist Team (HBT), first on the Containment Team a= nd later a Sniper. In 2005 Danny became part of the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) where he acted as a liaison between CIRT and the newly formed full-time Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT). In April of 2007 Dr. McG= uire began the promotion process for Sergeant, serving a 90 day detail to Area 2 Detective Division and was promoted to Sergeant in September of that year w= here he was assigned to the 008^th District in the Patrol Division. In 2008, Danny returned back to the Special Functions Section where he assumed= the duties of the Coordinator for the Critical Incident Response Team, which la= ter was converted to the Weapons of Mass Destruction Safety and Support Team (W= MD SST). During his tenure, Danny was able to network with outside agencies th= at provided the Chicago Police Department SWAT program numerous man hours of W= MD Training as well as provide support for the SWAT team during critical incidents. Danny is currently the Chief Crisis Negotiator for the SWAT Team= and is a member of the Chicago Police Department Peer Support Program as well as certified as a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) member. Dr. McGuire earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Calumet College of St. Joseph in Law Enforcement Management, a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology where he participated in a 700 hour therapy practicum with Forensic Clientele, and his Doctorate of Education emphasis Ethical Leadership from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. In addition, Danny has held certifications as an Active Shooter Response Instructor, Hazardous Material Technician, and Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness Instructor. Danny has published several articles regarding Leadership in Law Enforcement and is a member of the Executive Bo= ard of Directors for the Illinois Tactical Officers Association (ITOA), the Aut= ism Society of Illinois as Vice President, and is the Leadership Committee Chai= rman for St Laurence O’ Toole High School as well as a Committee Member for the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois Rules and Ethics Committee. Dr. McGuire is adjunct faculty at Calumet College of Saint Joseph in Whiting Indiana, the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago Illinois, a= nd Governors State University in University Park Illinois teaching various Undergraduate and Graduate courses.

Course Description:

This class will examine the key concepts and implications of good, as well as po= or leadership. This includes the abilities of sound leaders to make decision during times of crisis. Explanations and theories on the leadership and crisis management methods will also be presented and discuss= ed.

Learning Outcomes/ Competencies:

Students in this course will exam and explore leaders= hip traits and principles, as well as crisis management methods through individ= ual and group research. At the end of the course students will have more knowle= dge into leadership and crisis management methods.

Learning Strategies:

In this course students wil= l learn the importance of team work and Service Leadership which is an element in preparing the future of Law Enforcement Leaders by participating in team building assignments. Students will also use research tools to perform week= ly research projects to generate reflection papers in APA format. Lastly, stud= ents in this course will participate in lengthy discussions with regard to videos they will watch. <= /span>

Assessment:

Weekly Reflections

Week two through five, each= student will turn in a weekly reflection paper on a leadership topic discussed the prior week. Each student will hand in a (2) to (3) page reflection paper in= APA format which will consist of a brief summary of the prior week video/media/= readings/power point and a reflection in the student’s perspective.

Attendance and Participation

Students are expected to co= me to class and participate in discussions regarding the course materials and readings.

The Final Paper will be fou= nded on individual research due by the conclusion of class in week six. This pap= er will be (8) to (10) pages in APA format with at least (5) citations and the topic of this paper will be leadership.

Class Policy on Attendance:

Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reason(s) for the withdrawal must be filed wi= th the Registrar. The Registrar must receive written request for withdrawal by= the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be mailed to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request is forwarded to the fac= ulty member, who makes the final determination to accept or deny the request. If= the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indicate why the withdrawal is disallowed.

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W"= grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incurs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).
