Instructor Background: Dr. Angelo was a 25 year member of the Chicago Police Department…serving as a patrol and gang officer in the Distric= t, a gang enforcement officer in the Gang Crime Enforcement Unit-North, a member= of the Hostage-Barricade-Terrorist Team, a Detective in the Bomb and Arson Section, a full-time field rep for the Fraternal Order of Police, Chicago L= odge #7, a trainer for Chicago Police Department recruits, pre-service Detective= s, Sergeants and Lieutenants, the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, as w= ell as for many Chicago area suburban police agencies. Educationally, Dr. Angelo earned h= is undergraduate and graduate degrees from Lewis University in Criminal-Social Ju= stice and his doctorate from Loyola University, Chicago in Curriculum and Instruction.

Course Description: This course deals with evidence protection, processing, maintaining = the “chain”, admissibility and overall crime scene management. The course will show the importance of a professional approach to the investiga= tive process, scene preservation, preparation for and credible courtroom presentation. Other areas explored will include common techniques used in investigations, such interviewing and interrogating, documenting the scene, utilizing evidentiary results, reconstruction…as related to successful control and management of the scene.

Learning Outcomes/Competencies: Students in this course will develop a greater understanding of the intricacies invo= lved in recognizing, planning and responding to crime scenes. In today’s environment, criminal investigations are constantly changing and to remain = in the position to perform at one’s highest level of investigative succe= ss, practitioner s must remain ever vigilant and proactive in addressing the multifaceted needs of American Policing. The student of this course will develop the knowledge based techniques and approaches to be current and effective in providing the ever-changing skills necessary to protect societ= y in the 21^st Century.

*Properly Formatted, Written Project: <= /span>The written project subject-matter wi= ll be discussed and assigned with student/instructor input during the first two class sessi= ons. The properly formatted, written projects are worth 30% of the total cour= se grade. The project must be typed, in proper CCSJ, APA format, contain neces= sary components as discussed during in-class sessions… all of which wil= l be addressed by Dr. Angelo.

**Class Participation of Course Assignments: Class participation is vital to any learning process. Students should always be prepared to discuss the assigned material(s) and mandatory outside readings= as listed. Each and every student is strongly encouraged to actively participa= te throughout this term. Class participation (or lack thereof), may affect the group’s final grades and is certainly included in the determination of the individual student’s final grade.

*** Mandatory ‘Outside’ Readings: Students= are not only encouraged to become involve in independent readings; they are required to locate 2 separate…course-specific readings (one from an Internet source). Outside readings are to be brought to the class and presented. Article cont= ent will then be further discussed on its course relevance, professional impact= and overall potential to be accepted and/or rejected by today’s members of the public safety community. &n= bsp;

Class Policy on Attendance: = It is a serious matter when a student misses (ev= en one) class session due to the accelerated format of this graduate program. Additionally, attendance for this course is paramount for successful comple= tion of the Final Project and therefore required for each and every student, each and every class session. Per program guidelines, if the student misses more than one class session, he/she will be required to withdraw from this modul= e by contacting the CCSJ Graduate Academic Coordinator…as well as the inst= ructor.

Course Policy for Assignments: Students will be given ample time to work on their assignments. All assignments are = to be turned in at the beginning of the class period on the day they are due. Students should be aware that late assignments are accepted, but reduced by= (at least) one letter grade, unless previous arrangements have been made and ag= reed to between the student and the instructor.

Citation Guidelines: Calumet College of St. Joseph’s PSM program adheres to APA guidelines as prescribed by the program’s internal Writing Manual and the most recent APA Writing Manual. These guidelines are available in the Calumet College of St. Joseph library or bookstore. There are several = other textbooks, which outline how to cite references in the APA style, including several electronic media and web-based locations as well.=

Statement of Plagiarism: If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter= up for judicial review.
