Instructor Background: Mrs. Wachala is an Eng= lish instructor who has been teaching at the college level since 1998. She teach= es creative writing, composition, and humanities.

Course Description:

HUM 110. Foundations of Western Civilization

3 hours<= /strong>

This course introduces students to the major artistic and intellectual movements in our culture. The course introduces the arc of history though the humanities, tracing the foundation of Western civilization from the earliest Judeo-Christian tradition, through the Greco-Roman period, Medieval Europe,= the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the Romantic era, to the age of globalization. The course provides an introductory framework for the Calumet College core curriculum.

Learning Outcomes/ Competencies:

Students in this course will receive learn to identify = and analyze what it means to be human by exploring major ideas represented in t= he arts. Secondary objectives are to sharpen one’s critical skills, to better understand history and culture, to identify some of the central figu= res of the humanities, and to become more articulate in discussing and writing about these.

EXTRA CREDIT: We strongly urge students to attend arts events—concerts, plays, lectures, art exhibits. A calendar of free and low-cost events in the area will be made available. A 2-3 page paper descri= bing the event and critically examining it can earn you a maximum of 10 points, based on the quality of the paper.

Class Policy on Attendance: Your attendance is an important part of this class. When you come to class, come on time, be prep= ared to participate, and stay for the entire class. If you must come late or lea= ve early because of your work schedule or child care arrangements, please tell= us in advance. Disruptive behavior—repeatedly arriving late, leaving ear= ly, or rudeness in general—will result in a grade penalty to be determine= d at the end of the term.

QUIZZES: There may be unannounced quizzes on the course material. They will be given in the first 15 minutes of class. These quizzes cannot be made up. There will also be a music quiz, the date to be announce= d. A study guide to musical terms will be handed out beforehand.

DUE DATES AND LATES: Please turn in assignments prompt= ly. You’ll lose 1 point per day for late assignments. (In case of emergency—hospitalization, death in the family—please talk to u= s to make arrangements for late work.)

Statement of Plagiarism:

If an instructor or other Calumet College of St. Joseph personnel find that a student has plagiarized or been involved in another form of academic dishonesty, the instructor or other personnel may elect to bring the matter= up for judicial review. Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students = may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reaso= n(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must rec= eive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be maile= d to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are= to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request= is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accep= t or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indic= ate why the withdrawal is disallowed.

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incu= rs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).

Student Support Services:

Among its other services, the Student Support Services Office guides, counsels and assists students with disabilities. If a student believes that he or she needs a “reasonable accommodation” of some kind because of a physical, psychological, or mental condition (e.g., additional time needed for tests, note taking assistance, special testing arrangements, etc.), he or she should contact t= he Student Support Services Office at 473-4388. Staff there will secure documentation pertinent to the disability and work with faculty and staff, = if necessary, to address the matter.
