Course Description: Students w= ill learn the basics of watercolor painting including the wash, wet-in-wet technique, hard and soft edges, textures, and other techniques. Subject matter will include, but n= ot limited to, floral, still life, landscapes, and animals.

&nbs= p; Exper= ience different methods of producing a watercolor

&nbs= p; Create completed, successful watercolor paintings with a value sketch for each

&nbs= p; Learn the difference between various papers

&nbs= p; Be able to mat a painting properly

&nbs= p; Compl= ete 3 half sheet paintings properly matted.&nb= sp; Complete 3 value sketches.

A new assignment will be given as indicated in the Class Dates section. If the previous assignment is not finished, it must be finished as homework. <= /p>

&nb= sp; Also, on Thursday nights, our Ceramics Adjunct will be here working = on some of his projects. You are welcome to come during that time to work on assignments.<= /p>

Class Policy on Attendance: Students are responsible for attending all sessions. A major portion of = work and concepts learned and practiced occur during class time. This time is impossible to make up= . Punctuality is important. Contact me by phone or email before that session for an excused absence. After two absences, the grade poin= t will be lowered one point for each session missed. Students who arrive late= and leave early will be docked for that time period. Any student exhibiting disruptive behavior will be asked to leave the classroom and will be counted absent for that day.

Class = Policy on Electronic Devices: Cell phones should be turned completely off during class. Students may use I Pods if they are at a volume that does not bother other students.=

Intros, discuss materials, properties, and val= ue sketches. Stretch small pap= ers. Demonstrate techniques: wet-in-wet, wash, graded wash, d= ry brush, misket, salt. Studen= ts try techniques.

Mini demo and project.

Demonstration of snow landscape. Towel roll paper. Students develop value sketch an= d begin snow landscape. Will utilize above techniques in this project.

Begin to develop references. Use your own photos or paint fro= m a still life.

= Demo on flower petals (wet-in-wet, fading out).

Four finished paintings:

Class Field Trip: We will schedule a trip to th= e Art Institute of Chicago for September 23 at 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. If you are unable to make the sele= cted time, you will be required to attend any art gallery in the area. A written two page paper describing your favorite pieces of artworks will be due the following week.

Classr= oom Policies: Since we s= hare the classroom with other art classes, each student must clean his or her wo= rk area after each session (tables, easels, floor, etc.). Materials such as glue, brushes, p= aint, rulers, etc. must be clean and returned to their proper places.

Please respect other students’ art work.

Class Participation:

Students will work on their projects for the entire period.

Students will participate in the midterm and final critiques, which serve as the mid= term and final exams.

Students should leave at least one project for the student show in the spring. Other projects must be taken home.= Due to space limitations, any proj= ects left in the Art Room will be kept for one semester= and then disposed of if they are not claimed.

Safety Issues:

*Most paints you will use are non toxic. The paints one should be careful of are Cobalt, Manganese, Cerulean,= and Cadmiums. These are found mos= tly in oils and watercolors. Your ac= rylic paints will be fine.

*Just be aware when using an Xacto knife or other sharp tools. Your fingers are vulnerable.<= /o:p>

*Care must be taken when using spray fixatives and adhesives. While the small amount you use wil= l not be harmful, those who are sensitive to odors should take caution. Always spray away from yourself.

Tutoring Center:

The Tuto= ring Center is dedicated to supporting Calumet College of St. Joseph students. Students work with tutors to devel= op course competencies and study skills such as time management, test preparat= ion, and note taking. In addition, students are provided with tutoring support to help pass courses, to improve grade point average, and to promote continuing education and career advancement. Tutors have a sp= ecific charge: to help students learn how to master specific subject matter and to develop effective learning skills. Tutoring is open to all students at Calu= met College of St. Joseph at no charge and is available to support most introductory courses. Statement of Plagiarism:

Withdrawal from Classes Policy:

After the last day for class changes has passed (see College calendar), students = may withdraw from a course in which they are registered with permission from the faculty member conducting the course. A written request detailing the reaso= n(s) for the withdrawal must be filed with the Registrar. The Registrar must rec= eive written request for withdrawal by the last day of classes prior to the final examination dates specified in the catalogue. Written requests may be maile= d to the Registrar or faxed to the College fax number 219-473-4259. Students are= to make note of the refund schedule when withdrawing from courses. The request= is forwarded to the faculty member, who makes the final determination to accep= t or deny the request. If the request is honored, the student will receive notification of official withdrawal; if denied, the notification will indic= ate why the withdrawal is disallowed.

An official withdrawal is recorded as a "W" grade on the student's transcript. Dropping a course without written permission automatically incu= rs an "F" grade for the course (see Refund Schedule).

Student Support Services:

Among its other services, the Student Support Services Office guides, counsels and assists students with disabilities. If a student believes that he or she needs a “reasonable accommodation” of some kind because of a physical, psychological, or mental condition (e.g., additional time needed for tests, note taking assistance, special testing arrangements, etc.), he or she should contact t= he Student Support Services Office at 473-4388.
