   &nbs= p;        Welcome to Organizational Communication. My name is Holly Nagy, and I will be your instructor for the first course. I am sure you are feeling a bit overwhelmed with the commitment you have made, especially having just recei= ved your syllabus and textbook. I understand, as I have been there. I want you to be assured that you will be able to complete this class and the degree program with personal determination and discipline. This course, Organizational Communication, will be a challenge. It will also be an opportunity to meet and bond with your fellow deg= ree completion group members.

It is IMPORTANT to read through your first night’s readings and to complete the assignment PRIOR to the first night of class,= as no late assignments are accepted. If you have any questions about the following assignment and reading= s, please email or call me using the contact information on your syllabus.

First night assignments – Due when you come to the First Class (Sept. 2)

·         Rea= d Chapters One and Two from the Communication text.

·         Rea= d through the syllabus, paying particular attention to the Group Presentation Topics on page 7. I will be breaking you into presentati= on groups the first night of class.

·         Wri= ting Assignment Directions: Choose = one of the six concepts discus= sed in relation to Verbal Meaning in Chapter Two.= The six concepts are: semantics, language features, abstraction and concreteness, ambiguity and vagueness, denotation and connotation, style, a= nd Korzybski’s Laws.

Write a short paper (1 = 211; 2 pages) using the two guidelines below.

o   Define the one concept from Verbal mea= ning that you choose. Be sure to i= nclude the textbook definition.

o   Describe this one concept at work in your own personal communication experiences with other people.

Course Description

This course explores theories and topics in communicat= ion as the concepts apply to professional and personal situations. Student examine their own communic= ation style, strengths and weaknesses in order to improve communication; develop objective analysis skills as an observer and a participant-observer in communication interactions; and apply communication theories and concepts to real-life interactions.

Withdrawal from Classes Policy

Please see the Degree Completion Program’s Stude= nt Handbook for withdrawal policy. All withdrawals are completed through Degree Completion Academic Advisor’s office.

Class Attendance

It is a serious matter when a student misses even one session due to the accelerated format of the program. If the student misses more than one session, the student is required to withdraw from the module by contacting = the Academic Advisor and their instructor.

You must call the instructor when you will be unable to attend to make provisions to complete necessary make-up work.

Class Policy For Assignments

All assign= ments must be turned in on their assigned due date. Late assignments will not be accepted. Those unable to att= end class need to make provisions t= o get their assignment to class on the night it is due or within 3 business days following the due date.

Actively listen to another person for a minimum of 15 minutes, using as many active listening skills as possible. Then write an analysis paper that includes:

·         The person and situation

·         A general summary of your partner’s thought/ideas/concerns. (I do= not want or need details of what s/he said)

·         Very specific description of what you said a= nd did to actively listen to your partner

·         Foc= us on concepts introduced in the text for your analysis!!!!

·         Your partner’s response, either what y= ou could observe, or if appropriate, what your partner said about the interact= ion.

II.   Topics and groups will be established during the first class meeting. Students will have time during the following three class sessions to meet with their group. Additional communication between g= roup members will be necessary outside of class to organize the presentation.

III.   Each group member is responsible for obtaining two professional or academic references on the group’s topic. These resources are due week two.

IV.   Outline and Bibliography.   Each = group must turn in a presentation outline and a complete, properly formatted bibliography at the conclusion of their presentation presentation. Failure to do so, or an incomplete= or improperly formatted bibliography, will result in lost points.

V.   Students are expected to demonstrate good fundamental speech/public speaking skills,= and speech techniques will account for 25% of the grade. However, the primary evaluation of= the oral presentation will be on:

A)&n= bsp;   A summary of research findings, relevant facts, theories, etc.

B)&n= bsp;   Application, or potential application, of the facts= and theories to your own or the audience’s lives.

Journal An= alyses and Theory Application Paper

1.&n= bsp;     Summarize your communication goals from the first week. Then, briefly describe = your experience pursuing these goals. The summary should be based upon weekly journal entries. (Note: You must submit your journal entries with this paper.)

2.&n= bsp;     Apply four communication study areas from lectures and readings to your experience with the communication goals. Discuss how the theories relate to= your experience. You may use your journal entries as material for this analysis. U= sing terminology presented in the lecture and text to demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and reading throughout the course.

3.&n= bsp;     Describe how you plan to continue working towards y= our communication goals. Please describe the specific communication behavior changes your will continue to = work towards.

4.      THIS PAPER MUST BE 5 – 6 PAGES IN LENGTH.

Other Considerations

Rewrites

If a student is not satisfied with the points received= on analysis papers, s/he may rewrite and resubmit the paper(s) after consideri= ng instructor comments or discussion with the instructor. The points on the rewrite will be = the final grade for that paper, i.e., only one rewrite will be considered. All rewrites are due the week afte= r the paper is returned by the instructor. Due to the course structure, students cannot redo the group presenta= tion or literature reviews.

Note: The rewrite mus= t be attached to the original when submitted to the instructor. Each student may rewrite up to two papers.

English, g= rammar, spelling…

At this point in the students’ college career (junior-senior level), students are expected to possess a good command of the English languag= e, solid grammar and spelling skills, and the ability to write a clear, concise, well organized paper.

While these skills are not specifically taught in this course, they are an important aspect of the communication process. Therefore, if a student’= ;s written assignments reflect significant misuse of English or communica= tion terminology, poor grammar or spelling, or poorly organized or rambling= thoughts; this will be reflected in points assigned to the paper.

There are many helpful writing skill resources available thru Calumet Colleg= e of St. Joseph for students who find this area problematic. Please ask the instructor for contact information for additional writing assistance.
