The Wave return three seniors in 6-8 Center Jon Hanselman (4 PPG), 6-3 Guard Marcellus Phelps (11 PPG) and 6-4 Forward Waybon McConnell (5 PPG). The lone junior on this year’s team is 6-4 Fares Saqf Alhait, a big combo guard, who will look to have a breakout season.
Leading a group of talented underclassmen is First-Team All-Conference and CCAC Freshman of the Year Wilfredo Escobar (13 PPG). Escobar led all freshmen in minutes played and scoring for the Crimson Wave in conference play. Alvin Irby, a 6-7 Center, now has a year under his belt and looks to thrive in the Crimson Wave’s up-tempo style of play. Alongside Irby is 6-5 red shirt sophomore Robert Wright who is now ready to make a big impact on both sides of the floor. Rounding out the sophomore class is 6-3 Jon Contos, who may be the best pure shooter in the CCAC and will look to play a bigger role on this year’s team.
Coach Ryan Sexson’s second recruiting class includes a number of talented players that will look to make an immediate impact. CJ Montgomery is a 6-4 All-Conference swing player from Calumet High School. Charles Outlaw is a 6-3 All-Conference guard from Lincoln Park. Karl Anderson, a 6-3 Guard from Crete Monet High School, has a tremendous upside and may be the most athletic player on the Crimson Wave team. Rounding out the freshmen class are Ted Macis and Eli Macis from Lowell High School who will both look to add great depth to the Crimson Wave’s backcourt.
“Our non-conference schedule is amongst the toughest in the entire NAIA and with so many young players, we will have to develop in a hurry,” said Coach Sexson. “I think playing these kinds of top level teams early will allow us to gain quality experience. If we can learn from these experiences and continue to improve each and every day, we should have an opportunity to compete for a conference championship.”
The Wave tip off the season November 1 against Indiana Northwest in the Kettle Classic held at Purdue University Calumet.
