All-Area Richardson Signs with Crimson Wave
7/6/10 - Head men’s basketball coach Ryan Sexson has announced the signing of 6-2 guard Roddy Richardson from Jefferson High School in Lafayette, IN. The three year varsity starter averaged 16 points 8 rebounds and 2 steals per game in his senior season while winning 2 sectional titles in his time with the Bronchos.
Richardson earned a spot on the Lafayette Journal and Courier All-Area Big School First-Team and also participated in the Hall of Fame Classic All-Star Game as well as the Indiana Top 60 Workout. Rick Bolus of High Potential Recruiting Service ranked Richardson a top 25 player in the state of Indiana. Scouting Indiana lists him as a three star player.
“Roddy is a great addition to our basketball program because of the variety of things he can do on the basketball court,” said Sexson. “He is the kind of player that enjoys doing the things necessary to win basketball games. He is capable of scoring in multiple ways, but more importantly he thrives on the defensive end of the floor.”
Richardson joins fellow Lafayette native Alantae Crawford in CCSJ’s 2010 recruiting class. “We both play defense and we’re both hard-working players,” Richardson said. “We should compliment each other’s games and do well at CCSJ.”
Richardson was joined by a crowd of nearly 25 friends and family at the signing in Lafayette.
“It says a lot about Roddy’s character and the lives that he has touched when you see as many teachers, friends, and family come out to support him,” said Sexson. “There is no question we are adding another outstanding person to the CCSJ family.”
Richardson will major in Education while at CCSJ and plans to pursue a career in teaching and coaching.
Marquette Standout Johnson Signs With Crimson Wave
6/4/10 - Mat Johnson of Michigan City Marquette High School has signed his national letter of intent to play  basketball for Calumet College of Saint Joseph. The 6’9 Center averaged 9 Points and 12 Rebounds per game in his senior season. Johnson was selected to the All Conference Team in the Greater South Shore Conference. Mat was also named the 2010 Male Athlete of the Year at Michigan City Marquette High School.
“Mat gives us a solid post presence with his size and length,” said Head Coach Ryan Sexson. “He is somebody that has a lot of tools to go along with an outstanding work ethic, so he has the ability to become a really good player on both ends of the floor.”
Marquette Coach Jason Hawkins thinks CCSJ is a perfect fit for Mat. “Mat is getting a chance to go to a great program with very good coaches, said Hawkins.” “I think Mat will really develop in his time at Calumet.” “His work ethic is second to none and I think he will bring a lot to the CCSJ program.”
Johnson chose the Crimson Wave because of the players in the program and the relationship he developed with Coach Sexson. “The guys made me feel very comfortable on my visits,” said Johnson. “I really enjoyed spending time with the players, and the coaching staff treated me very well.” “I feel like it’s a great fit for me.”
Johnson will major in Education at CCSJ. “I really like History and I want to coach when I get done playing.” “I am looking forward to getting better everyday and hopefully contributing to a conference championship.”
Mat Johnson becomes the fourth signee in the CCSJ Men’s Basketball class of 2010.
Crimson Wave Ink Crawford at McCutcheon
4/28/10 - Head men’s basketball coach Ryan Sexson has announced the signing of Alantae Crawford from McCutcheon High School in  Lafayette, IN. The 6-0 guard averaged 17 points and 5 rebound per game in his senior season for the Mavericks. Crawford earned a spot on the Lafayette Journal and Courier All-Area Big School First-Team and also participated in the East West All-Star Game. Rick Bolus of High Potential Recruiting Service ranked Crawford as a top 50 player in the state of Indiana.
“Alantae is a tremendous athlete that gives it everything he has every second he is on the basketball court,” said Sexson. “His ability to defend and score on the wing will be great assets to our basketball program.” “I haven’t seen or heard of anyone who doesn’t think highly of Alantae both on and off the court and we are very happy to add a young man of his character.”
McCutcheon head coach Rick Peckinpaugh says Crawford’s upside is unlimited. “Right now he can jump out of the gym,” Peckinpaugh said. “The best thing he can do now is guard…anybody from 6-5 on down. He is going to be one of the hardest-working kids coach Sexson has ever had. He never takes a minute off.
Crawford chose the CCSJ for a variety of reasons. “I like the style…the way they play,” Crawford said. “I like the environment. I just feel like it will be a great place for me.”
Alantae intends to major in Business Management or Education at CCSJ.
Crawford joins Chris Diehl of Fort Wayne and Brian Brilmyer of Griffith to the Crimson Wave 2010 men’s basketball class.
Brilmyer Chooses the Crimson Wave
4/1/10 - Head men’s basketball coach Ryan Sexson has announced the signing of Brian Brilmyer of Griffith, IN. The 6-6 forward comes to  Calumet College of Saint Joseph after a successful prep career at Griffith High School where he averaged 11 points and 5 rebound per game in his senior season. Brilmyer was selected as an all conference player in the Northwest Crossroads Conference in both his junior and senior seasons.
“Brian can do a lot of things on the basketball court,” said Coach Sexson. “He is a very good shooter from beyond the arc, but he can also score in a variety of ways around the basket.” “His size and length make him a very good rebounder as well.” “Brian is going to be an outstanding player for us, and we are very happy to have him in our program.”
Brilmyer will major in Education while at CCSJ. “I enjoy working with kids, and I hope to one day be able to Coach, “said Brilmyer. “Everyone here was very nice and they made me feel welcome.”
Brian chose CCSJ because he felt comfortable with the players on the team and the relationship with the coaching staff. “All of the guys on the team really embraced me from the beginning,” said Brilmyer. “Coach Sexson has been watching me for a while now and I feel that he can make me a better basketball player.” “I felt CCSJ would be the best fit for me as a student and a basketball player.”
“Brian is a very good kid that comes from a really good family,” said Sexson. “He will be a tremendous asset to our basketball program.”
Brilmyer joins 6-7 forward Chris Diehl of Butler, IN as members of the 2010 CCSJ men’s basketball class.
Men Dominate the Peregrines to Advance
2/23/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team dominated the Purdue University Calumet Peregrines tonight in the opening round of the CCAC tournament 85-64.
The Crimson Wave came out on fire tonight as CJ Montgomery hit back to back three pointers to start the game. At the 14:48 mark Wilfredo Escobar drained a three from the top of the key to start a 26-8 run that gave the Crimson Wave a 21 point advantage. The Crimson Wave never let up and took a 25 point lead into the locker room at the half 50-25. Escobar scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half.
The Crimson Wave came out in the second half with the same intensity shooting 48.5% from the field. Robert Pogue grabbed 6 second half rebounds to go along with 9 Keith Dean points.
Escobar led four double digit scorers for the Crimson Wave with 19 points. Montgomery threw in 16, Antonio Hurt 15 and Dean 14 points.
The Crimson Wave will advance to the second round of the CCAC tournament, traveling to Milwaukee, WI on Thursday February 25th to face the tournament’s No. 1 seed Cardinal Stritch University.
Escobar Named CCAC Player of the Week
2/23/10 – Crimson Wave guard Wilfredo Escobar recorded two double-doubles last week and missed a triple double by two assists against Purdue University-Calumet. For his performances, Escobar has been named CCAC Men's Basketball Division II Player of the Week for the week ending February 21.
In an 85-64 win over Purdue University-North Central, Escobar had 18 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. He made 6-of-12 shots, including 3-of-6 from the three-point line. He also converted on 3-of-4 free throws.
CCSJ came up short against Purdue-Calumet, 78-74, but Escobar put together another great game with 15 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. He hit all four of his free throw attempts.
In the two games combined, Escobar averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 10.0 assists per game. He averages 3.6 assists per game which ranks fifth in the CCAC.
The Crimson Wave and Purdue-Calumet will be battling again on Tuesday night in the first round of the CCAC Tournament.
Men Fall Short at Home against PUC
2/20/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team came up short on Saturday against cross town rival and CCAC opponent the Purdue University Calumet Peregrines 78-74.
The first half started slow for the Crimson Wave as they fell behind four 6-2 in the first two minutes of play. The Crimson Wave would not let the Peregrines lead last for long grabbing their own four point lead off of back to back jumpers from Antonio Hurt and Keith Dean. The final minutes of the half would be a bitter back and fourth game of shooting that landed Hurt sixteen first half points going 8-11 from the field and Crimson Wave a one point half time lead, 34-33.
Over the first minutes of play in the second half Hurt and Wilfredo Escobar took control of the game leading the Crimson Wave to a 10-0 run to a score of 43-33. The Crimson Wave would hold their lead much of the second half until a small Peregrine run gave PUC a one point lead 54-53 near the 8 minute mark. The Peregrines would build a small lead of their own making the game 62-57 with 5:50 left in play. Escobar would answer back burying a three and two free throws to bring the game to its seventh tie of the night at 65 apiece with 3:21 on the clock.
The Crimson Wave found them in a back in forth game and down one point with 39 seconds reaming. After a missed Crimson Wave three the men fouled to gain possession. The Peregrines split on from the free throw line and time ran out for the Crimson Wave.
The men were led by 27 points and 7 rebounds from Hurt going 12-17 from the field and 3-3 from the charity stripe. Escobar added 15 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds for the men. Escobar made good on all four free throw attempts.
The Crimson Wave (11-19, 4-8) will host Purdue Calumet in the opening round of the CCAC tournament on Tuesday February 23rd at 7:00 pm. The game will be played on Alumni Court on the campus of CCSJ.
Men Sink Purdue North Central
2/17/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team sunk the Purdue University North Central Panthers tonight 85-64.
The Crimson Wave were led by 24 points from Keith Dean, 18 points from Wilfredo Escobar, 16 and 11 points from C.J. Montgomery and Robert Pogue.
The Crimson Wave (11-18, 4-7) will host Purdue University Calumet Saturday February 20th at 3:00 pm in the final regular season conference game. This game will honor the Crimson Wave seniors along with being a school wide event in homecoming.
Men Fall to No. 9 Stritch
2/13/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team fell to NAIA No. 9 the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves 79-66.
The men were led by 14 points from Robert Pogue and 12 points from Antonio Hurt.
The Crimson Wave (10-18) will travel to Purdue University North Central Wednesday February 17 for a 7:00 pm CCAC conference match up.
Men Take Hard Loss to Eagles
2/10/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team lost to conference rival the Judson University Eagles 83-62.
The men came out strong starting the game on a 7-0 run with points from Wilfredo Escobar, Brannon Jones, and Antonio Hurt. This would be the last Crimson Wave lead of the night as the Eagles made their own run taking the lead with 15:03 left in the half. The Crimson Wave went to the locker room down 39-20 at the half.
The men made a couple of runs in the second half getting the Eagles lead down to 13 points with 14:50 left in the game. The Eagles slowly built the lead back to 19 points over the next 8 minutes of play. The Crimson Wave’s second run of the half brought the lead down to 16 points but the men could not hold on and gave the game to the Eagles.
The Crimson Wave were led by 22 points and four assists from Escobar. The men will head to Cardinal Stritch University on Saturday February 13 for a 3:00 pm CCAC match up.
Men Take Loss in Final Seconds to Trolls
2/6/10 - The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team lost in the final five seconds tonight to the Trinity Christian College Trolls 67-66 in a CCAC conference match up.
The Crimson Wave found themselves with a 9 point lead at the half 35-26 after shooting 7-7 from the free throw line in the first half of play.
The Trolls cut the Crimson Wave lead to two at the 18:32 mark in the second on back to back jump shots. The men pushed the lead back to nine on Wilfredo Escobar and Jon Contos three pointers. The Crimson Wave would maintain a solid lead over the next eight minutes of play until a small Trolls run cut the men’s lead to one.
Escobar would answer back with a baseline layup for a three point Crimson Wave lead. After trading a series of free throws the Crimson Wave clung to a 2 point lead, 61-59 with 6:11 remaining play. Contos hit his final shot of the night with 5:16 on the clock to make it a 63-59 Crimson Wave lead. The Trolls Will Bruinsma answered back with a four point conversion to tie the game at 63. Escobar brought the lead back to three on a make from behind the arc with 4:25 left. The game would go scoreless until the 1:10 mark when the Trolls Matt Buren hit a short jumper to make it a one point game 66-65. After a Crimson Wave foul the Trolls knocked down both free throws for a one point lead 67-66. With 1.5 seconds left Escobar drove the left side of the floor and pulled up from half court, the ball seemingly banked in and popped out for a Crimson Wave defeat.
Escobar led the men with 15 points while Keith Dean and Contos had 13 and 11 points each.
The Crimson Wave (10-16, 3-5) will travel to Elgin, Il to take on the Eagles of Judson University Wednesday February 10 at 7:30 pm.
Men Crush Trojans in CCAC Game
2/3/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team crushed the Trinity International University Trojans tonight in a CCAC conference game 88-70.
The men got off to a slow start falling behind 13-2 in the first four minutes of play. After two baskets by Wilfredo Escobar and a pair of free throws by Keith Dean the men put themselves back within five. A good basket by Antonio Hurt cut the Trojan lead to three points with 11:53 left to play in the half. From there the Crimson Wave started to build their lead outscoring the Trojans 35-19 in the final ten minutes of the first half. The Crimson Wave went to the locker ahead 46-34 at the break.
After the break it was all Crimson Wave as the men went on a 18-6 run to start to the half and increased their lead to 24 with 11:02 left in play. From there the men never looked back running away with the game 88-70.
The Crimson Wave were led by 23 points and 7 rebounds from Dean along with 18 points and 7 rebounds from Escobar.
The Crimson Wave (10-15, 3-4) will host Trinity Christian College on Saturday February 6th at 3:00 pm.
Men Beat Peregrines in Cross Town Rival
1/27/10 - The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team came up big in the final minutes of play against cross town rival and CCAC opponent Purdue University Calumet, 78-75.
The Crimson Wave men got off to a slow start and found themselves trailing by two at the 10:00 minute mark. This would be the last Peregrine lead of the night and the Crimson Wave took over. Brannon Jones and Keith Dean would hit back to back lay ups for a four point lead. At the 6:18 mark the Crimson Wave would start a 12-0 run starting with two Dean free throws, points by CJ Montgomery and Wilfredo Escobar and a three point bucket by Jon Contos. The Crimson Wave would go to the locker room at half time with an 8 point lead 42-34.
Sixteen seconds into the second half the men picked up where they left off with Contos burying a three from the wing off a pass from Robert Pogue. The Crimson Wave would lead by double digits most of the second half until a small Peregrine run left the men ahead by only two, 76-74.
At the 2:50 mark the game seem to go cold in its entirety. Both teams missed shot after shot and series of turnovers seemed to mark a change in play. With forty five seconds remaining in play the Peregrines Eric Summers split a set of free throws to make it a one point Crimson Wave advantage. Pogue grabbed the board for the Crimson Wave. With fourteen seconds left Antonio Hurt would get an unlucky break on the rim and his layup popped out. The Peregrines came up with the rebounded and headed down floor to take the lead. The Peregrines Kedric Williams would turn the ball over and Purdue Calumet was forced to foul. The desperation foul sent Escobar to the line for a pair. Escobar sunk both for a three point Crimson Wave advantage 78-75. The men stayed strong on the defensive end claiming the victory.
The Crimson Wave were led by Escobar who poured in 24 points shooting 50% from the arc, 4-8. Dean and Hurt added 16 and 12 points in the victory.
The men will take the weekend off, hosting Trinity International University Wednesday February 3rd at 7:30 pm.
Men Lose to Panthers in Conference Matchup
1/23/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team came up short today against the Purdue University North Central Panthers 79-76.
The men got off to a slow start today trailing by as many as eight in the first half. Wilfredo Escobar poured in 15 points in the first half going four for four at the free throw line. The men trailed by only four at the half, 33-29.
The second half brought a deficit of 17 points for the men at the 8:11 mark. The Crimson Wave would not let the Panther lead last. Over the next four minutes of play the men would go on a 14-0 run. During the run the men came up with three unanswered steals. Jon Contos hit two three pointers, while Antonio Hurt threw in four of the points and Robert Pogue and Keith Dean each added a pair. The Panthers would real off the next five points to increase their lead to nine, 75-66, with 36 seconds left in play. Dean hit a three with 20 seconds left to make it a six point game. After two made Panther free throws, Hurt floated a three in with 7 seconds on the clock to make it a 5 point Panther lead. The Panthers Ryan Sisson missed two free throws to give the Crimson Wave the ball. Dean would hit the next three pointer to make it a two point deficit.
The men would foul the Panthers Derrick Hazelwood to try and gain possession. Hazelwood hit both free throws for a 4 point Panther advantage. With two tenths of a second left Sisson fouled the Crimson Wave’s Devon Key on his last second three point attempt, and sent Key to the line for three free throws. Key hit one of three free throws and the Crimson Wave ran out of time.
Escobar led the men with 19 points while Contos added 17 points for the Crimson Wave. Pogue and Dean added 13 and 11 points respectively.
The Crimson Wave (8-15, 1-3) will travel across town to Purdue University Calumet Wednesday January 27th for a 7:00 pm CCAC showdown.
Men Lose to No. 12 Wolves at Home
1/20/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team was defeated tonight by NAIA No. 12 Cardinal Stritch University Wolves, 89-57.
The Crimson were led by Robert Pogue’s 22 points.
The Crimson Wave (8-14, 1-3) will host conference opponent Purdue University North Central on Saturday January 23rd at 3:00 pm.
Men Lose Despite Three in Double Digits
1/16/10 – The Crimson Wave found themselves with three players in double digits scoring tonight despite a tough loss to the Judson University Eagles.
The men came out of the gates strong grabbing an ten point lead seven minutes into play after a Robert Pogue steal converted into two points for the Crimson Wave. The Crimson Wave stayed hot the rest of the half shooting 63.3% from the field. The men ended the half with a six point lead 54-48.
The second half started with a Keith Dean pass to Wilfredo Escobar for a three pointer from the wing extending the Crimson Wave lead to nine. The men fought hard to keep the lead by finally let the Eagles back into the game and found themselves trailing by six, 71-65 at the 11:31 mark.
With 10:15 remaining Jon Contos hit a three point basket from the left wing to tie the game at 73. The Crimson Wave would head to the defensive end of the floor where Dean stole a pass from the Eagles Jim Kuban and took it the length of the floor for a two point Crimson Wave lead. This would be the last Crimson Wave lead of the night as a streak of missed shots would set in and the Eagles grabbed an 11 point lead. The men fought hard to get themselves back in the game but could not get back their offensive rhythm and fell to the Eagles 98-82.
The men were led by Dean’s 23 points along with 20 points from Escobar and 16 from Pogue.
The Crimson Wave (8-13, 1-2) will host Cardinal Stritch University January 20th at 7:30 pm.
Men Escape with Win Over Trolls
1/13/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team escaped with a win over the Trinity Christian College Trolls tonight 73-69 in the final minute of play.
The Crimson Wave men came out focused on defense to compliment their 81.6 ppg average. The men came strong grabbing and early ten point lead in the first four minutes of play. The Trolls would not trail for long tying the game at 16 a piece with 10:03 on the clock. After a steal and three point bucket by Wilfredo Escobar the men found themselves with a three point lead. This would be the last Crimson Wave lead of the half as the Trolls took a one point half time lead 35-34.
The Crimson Wave came out in the second half shooting and jumped to a 6 point lead with 15:09 left in play. After a series of lead changes and made jumpers the game found itself with a one point Crimson Wave lead when CJ Montgomery tucked in a layup on the right side of the lane. The Crimson Wave would go to the defensive end and send the Trolls Will Bruinsma to the line for two made free throws to send the game into a one point Troll lead.
With 18 seconds remaining in the contest Escobar fouled Trinity’s Michael Thompson. Thompson missed the first of his bonus opportunity and Keith Dean grabbed the rebound driving the length of the floor. Dean would make it to the baseline when the Trolls defense collapsed on him and he shot the pass out to a wide open Escobar who sunk the three pointer from the top of the key. The Trolls immediately called a time out. Josh Flikkema would inbound the ball for the Trolls passing it right into the hands of Escobar who was immediately fouled. Escobar sunk both giving the Crimson Wave a 73-69 victory over the Trolls.
The Crimson Wave were led by Dean’s 34 points along with 17 from Escobar. Dean was also perfect from the charity stripe going 10-10.
The Crimson Wave (8-12, 1-1) will host conference rivalry Judson University Saturday January 16 at 3:00 pm.
Men Lose to Trojans Despite Halftime Lead
1/9/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team took their first conference loss of the season tonight against the Trinity International University Trojans despite an eight point halftime lead.
The Crimson Wave to off to a slow start grabbing their first lead of the night a the 8:12 mark in the first half on an Antonio Hurt jump shot. With 3:47 left in the half Jon Contos hit a three pointer from the wing off a Kyle Mueller pass to start an 11-0 Crimson Wave run; that would end with a Wilfredo Escobar pull up jumper from the lane and give the Crimson Wave a 43-35 lead at the half.
The second half was not as bright for the men. After hitting the first two baskets of the second half the Crimson Wave would go on a dry spell scoring only two points over the next six minutes of play. During those six minutes the Trojans grabbed a 10 point advantage over the men. The Crimson Wave never got back in the game and took their first conference loss 99-76.
Hurt led the men with 23 points while Escobar added 10.
The Crimson Wave (7-12 overall, 0-1 CCAC) will travel to Trinity Christian College on Wednesday January 13, for a 7:30 pm conference match up. The game will be broadcast live on the Crimson Wave Radio Network.
Men Win at IUN
12/22/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team won a thriller tonight at Indiana University Northwest 78-77.
The Crimson Wave led by one at the half 34-33. The second half the Crimson Wave came out and jumped on a early 6 point lead. The lead would not last for long and the game bounced between each team having a one point lead for much of the half. With 11.8 seconds remaing Wilfredo Escobar sank a pair of free throws to give the Crimson Wave a three point lead 78-75. After a foul and two IUN foul shots the Crimson Wave in bounded the ball and held on for the win.
The men were led by 17 points a piece by Keith Dean and Wilfredo Escobar.
The Crimson Wave (7-11) will take a couple weeks off before traveling to Trinity International University on Saturday January 9th for a 7:30 pm game to open the conference season.
Escobar Joins 1,000 Point Club
12/20/09 – Whiting, IN – Crimson Wave men’s basketball junior guard Wilfredo Escobar secured his place in Crimson Wave basketball history when he reached the 1,000 point plateau. Escobar is just the fourth Crimson Wave men’s basketball player to reach this mark.
With just 11 seconds left in the game against Waldorf College in the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite, Escobar put away a pair of free throws to give him his 1,000th and 1, 1001 point of his career. He finished the night with 23 points and three assists. As the Crimson Wave defeated Waldorf 72-65.
Escobar has been named to the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference all-conference team each of his three years playing for the Crimson Wave. Escobar was also named CCAC Freshman of the year in 2007-2008.
Escobar has also become the Crimson Wave men’s basketball all-time assist leader with 236 assists.
Men Go Down to the Wire with Carthage
12/19/09 – The Crimson Wave (6-11) men’s basketball went down to the wire tonight against the Carthage College Red Men, currently ranked 23rd by d3hoops.com poll, just falling short 90-88.
The Crimson Wave spent the entire first half with lead except on three occasions when the Red Men tied the game. The men went into the break with a three point lead 43-40. The Crimson Wave’s first half control was lead by Keith Dean and Antonio Hurt who scored 15 and 14 points in the half. The men got the job done early at the charity stripe hitting 10-11.
The second half the Crimson Wave retied the game on their second possession of the half on a Dean layup after a pair of jumpers gave the Red Men their first lead of the night. With 5:20 remaining in the half the Crimson Wave found themselves with a two point lead, 75-73, and the ball. After a set of missed jumpers the Red Men regained the lead. At the 3:43 mark the men took a 78-77 lead. Dean would score the men’s next seven points each being answered by the Red Men. With 7.6 left on the clock the men were down 88-85 when Hurt hit a three point shot from the top of the key to tie the game. With less than three seconds on the clock the Red Men found Max Carey behind the Crimson Wave defense for the game winning layup.
The Crimson Wave shot 44.9 percent from the field and 89.5 percent from the free throw line. Dean ended the night with 34 points going 12-19 from the field and 4-6 from behind the arc. Hurt threw in 24 and grabbed 9 rebounds for the men.
The Crimson Wave will travel across the region on Tuesday night to take on Indiana University Northwest in a 7:00 pm game.
Men Sink Kuyper
12/12/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team sunk Kuyper College today, 90-68 in day two of the Bethel College Invite.
The game was all Crimson Wave from the tip off and the men had a 28 point lead 53-25 at the half. Wilfredo Escobar had 20 points while Jon Contos threw in 19 and 9 rebounds including five three pointers. The Crimson Wave shot 84 percent from the free throw line in the win.
Escobar and Contos were both named to the all-invite team. The men are now 6-10 overall.
Good Shooting Not Enough
12/8/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team shot 43.2 percent from the field, but it was not enough to hold off CCAC Division One opponent Robert Morris University.
The Crimson Wave came out strong against the Eagles and took their first and only lead of the night with nine minutes remaining in the first half on a CJ Montgomery layup. The Crimson Wave could not hold off the Eagles charge and went to the locker room down 13 at the half 52-39.
The second half brought a strong surge by the Crimson Wave who cut the deficit to four with 8 minutes left in play. Despite shooting 88.9 percent from the free throw line in the second half the Crimson Wave could not hold on and the Eagles took the game 101-92.
Keith Dean led the Crimson Wave with 30 points while Robert Pogue and Wilfredo Escobar added 24 and 18 points respectively.
The Crimson Wave (5-9) will compete at the Bethel College Invite this weekend.
Men at Robert Morris Tonight
12/8/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team will travel to Chicago, IL to take on CCAC Division 1 opponent Robert Morris University. The game will tip off at 7:30 pm and will be played at Alumni Gym on the campus of Loyola University. The game will be broadcast live on the Crimson Wave Radio Network.
The Crimson Wave are coming a off a loss to Bellevue University in the championship game of the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite this past weekend. Keith Dean is currently leading the Crimson Wave and the CCAC in scoring at 22.4 ppg while Wilfredo Escobar is leading the Crimson Wave in assist per game with 2.8. The Crimson Wave are currently 5-8 overall this season.
Dean and Escobar Named to All-Invite Team
12/5/09 – Crimson Wave men’s basketball players Keith Dean and WIlfredo Escobar were named to the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite All-Invite Team this weekend.
Bellevue’s Avery Tyler was named most outstanding player. Teammate Antoine Dade was also named to the all-invite team. Waldorf’s Karl Dehesa and Bethel’s Andre Crudup were also named to the team.
Crimson Wave Holiday Invite Day Two
12/05/09 – The Crimson Wave Holiday Invite ended with the Crimson Wave being defeated in the championship game against Bellevue University 78-68.
The consolation game ended with Waldorf College on top against Bethel University 72-59 in a well played game by both teams.
The championship game started with an early three point lead by the Crimson Wave on a Wilfredo Escobar three point shot. The lead did not last long and Bellevue jumped ahead by five at the ten minute mark. With 4:05 left in play the Crimson Wave regained the lead on a Keith Dean steal and layup. After a set of back and forth jumpers the game went to half time in a tie 39 a piece.
The second half started with Bellevue taking a 17 point advantage. The Crimson Wave fought back going on a 12-2 run ending on a pair of Dean free throws. The Crimson Wave could not hold on and gave the game to Bellevue 78-68.
Dean led all scoring with 21 points. Escobar ended with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Robert Pogue threw in 12 points and 7 rebounds.
The Crimson Wave are now 5-8.
Holiday Invite Day One
12/04/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team will face Bellevue University in the championship game of the Holiday Invite after defeating Waldorf College 72-65 in game one.
The Crimson Wave found themselves down by ten points in the first 8 minutes of play tonight against Waldorf College. After a string of jumpers and a 13-2 run that was capped by Keith Dean free throw the men found themselves up one point 22-21. Waldorf would make a small run of their own and the Crimson Wave found themselves tied , 33-33, at the half.
The second half was all Crimson Wave leading by as many as 10. Wilfredo Escobar and Dean each had 12 and 11 points throughout the second half of play. Dean finished the night with 24 and Escobar with 23. The Crimson Wave went 17-20 on the night from the free throw line.
Game two saw Bellevue University matched up against Bethel University (TN). After a back and forth battle throughout the first half Bellevue went to the locker at the half with a ten point lead 40-30. The second half of play was all Bellevue. The final ended with Bellevue 85 and Bethel 57.
The Crimson Wave will face Bellevue University in the Championship game at 2:00 pm tomorrow December 5th. Waldorf College will take on Bethel University at 12:00 pm in the consolation game. All games are played at home on the campus of CCSJ.
Top 100 Recruit Signs With Crimson Wave Basketball
Head Coach Ryan Sexson has announced the signing of Butler, IN standout Chris Diehl. Chris comes to Calumet College of Saint Joseph from Eastside High School where as a Junior Diehl averaged 11 points per game and hit on 28 three-point field goals for the Blazers. “Chris is a very versatile basketball player”, said Coach Sexson. “He can shoot the ball, make plays off the dribble and with his size will be an outstanding rebounder.” “He has a great feel for the game and has a chance to be a very good player at this level.” The 6-7 small forward is ranked by many recruiting publications as a top 100 player in the state of Indiana. Scouting Indiana has him listed as a three star recruit.
Diehl’s high school coach, Scott Hudson, could not be happier for his star player. “Discipline and work ethic have served Chris very well,” Hudson said. “Chris is grateful to his teammates and the people who have helped him get to this point.” “I am sure he will have a great career at CCSJ.”
Diehl will major in Elementary Education while at CCSJ. His mother is a teacher at Butler Elementary School. “She got me thinking that way,” Diehl said. “I realized I really like working with kids. I feel like I can relate to them and have a lot of fun around them.”
Chris chose CCSJ because of the outstanding Education Department and the chance to compete on a good basketball team immediately. “I felt like I had an opportunity to play when I get here,” said Diehl. “I really like the guys on the team, the players and the coaches made me feel very comfortable on my visits.” “It kind of feels like staying at home even though it’s three hours away.”
“Chris is a tremendous kid from a great family who just happens to be a really good basketball player,” said Sexson. “We are very excited about adding Chris to the CCSJ family.”
Dean Second Straight Player of the Week
12/2/09 - Crimson Wave junior Keith Dean (Gary, IN) continues to lead the men’s basketball team and the league offensively and has been named CCAC Men's Basketball Division II Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. For the week ending November 29, Dean averaged 22.7 points, while leading the Crimson Wave to two wins.
The Crimson Wave defeated Holy Cross College 100-81 early in the week. Dean logged 32 minutes and had a great stat line with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal. He shot 6-of-11 from the field, 3-of-6 from three-point range and made 5-of-6 free throws.
Despite a loss to Ohio Dominican University, 74-52, Dean had another solid night with 18 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.
The Crimson Wave bounced back the next day to defeat Shawnee State University in overtime, 78-76. Dean played an impressive 43 minutes, collecting 30 points, including five three-point field goals. He also tallied six rebounds, five assists, a block and three steals.
Dean was named to the Ohio Dominican Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team for his performances against Ohio Dominican and Shawnee State.
In the three games combined, Dean averaged 22.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He shot 42 percent from the field, 37 percent from behind the arc and 76 percent from the free throw line. He had a combined 10 made three-point field goals in the three games.
He now leads the CCAC with a 22.4 points per game average and is tied for fourth with a 6.0 rebounds per game average. Calumet is 4-7 on the year.
Dean Named to All-Classic Team
11/28/09 – Crimson Wave Junior men’s basketball player Keith Dean was named to the Ohio Dominican University Thanksgiving Classic All-Classic Team. Dean scored 18 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the Crimson Wave’s loss to host Ohio Dominican University. Dean threw in 30 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in the men’s overtime victory over Shawnee State University in game two of the classic.
Crimson Wave Split at Thanksgiving Classic
11/28/09 - The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team competed at the Ohio Dominican Thanksgiving Classic this weekend in Columbus, Ohio.
The Crimson Wave had a rough start opening the classic, taking on host Ohio Dominican University Panthers. The Crimson Wave struggled most of the night shooting just 26.9% from the field. The Panthers defeated the Crimson Wave 74-52. Junior Keith Dean led the Crimson Wave with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Karl Anderson threw in 10 points for the men.
Game two of the classic brought success for the men, coming out on top in an overtime win against the Shawnee State University Bears. The Crimson Wave led the entire first half going to the locker room with a four point lead 33-29. The men got 12 points from Senior Fares Saqf-Alhait in the first half shooting 32% from the field. Saqf-Alhait buried four three’s in the half.
The second half started with the Crimson Wave in control. After three minutes of play the Bears connected on a series of layups to take a 5 point lead. After a series of lead changes the game tied at 71 points a piece on a Dean three pointer from Saqf-Alhait with 28 seconds remaining. The Crimson Wave held their defensive positions and the Bears missed a jumper with time running out to send the game to overtime. Overtime was all Crimson Wave escaping 78-76 over the bears.
Dean ended the night leading the Crimson Wave with 30 points while Junior Wilfredo Escobar dropped in 20 for the men. Saqf –Alhait contributed six in the second half totaling 18 on the night.

Men Wash Away Holy Cross
11/26/09 - Senior Fares Saqf-Alhait and Junior Keith Dean scored 20 points each in the Crimson Wave’s wash of the Holy Cross College Saints.
The Crimson Wave came out strong jumping out to a 16 point lead in the first nine minutes of play on a Saqf-Alhait three pointer from Wilfredo Escobar. The Crimson Wave continued to dominate the first half going to the locker room with an 11 point lead 57-46.
During the first ten minutes of play in the second half the Crimson Wave continued to dominate leading 74-64 at the ten minute mark. Holy Cross would soon get the hot hand and cut the lead to five with 6:51 left in play. That would be the closest the Saints would get and the Crimson Wave went on a 11-1 run to go up 15 with three and half left. The Crimson Wave would take the game 100-81.
Escobar added 16 points and 11 assists to help in the Crimson Wave victory.
The Crimson Wave (3-6) will travel to Ohio-Dominican University for a two day tournament this Friday and Saturday November 28 and 29. The Crimson Wave will take host Ohio Dominican University on Friday evening at 8:00 pm.
Men to Battle Saints
11/25/09 - The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team will host the Holy Cross College Saints (1-9) tonight at 7:00 pm at the Recreation Athletic Facility on the campus of CCSJ. The Crimson Wave (2-6) are coming off a 94-71 loss to New Mexico Highlands University. The Crimson Wave are looking to settle into their offense tonight behind CCAC Player of the Week Keith Dean who currently leads the CCAC in scoring at 23.6 ppg.
Dean Named CCAC Player of the Week
11/25/09 - Calumet College junior guard Keith Dean (Gary, IN) had three impressive games last week including a 37-point performance in a win over the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He averaged 25 points in three games to earn CCAC Men's Basketball Division II Player of the Week for the week ending November 22.
Against Michigan-Dearborn, Dean scored his season-high 37 points on 15-of-24 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He also had six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two three-point field goals.
In an 87-56 loss to Fort Lewis, Dean was once again the team's leading scorer, this time with 17 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and a steal. He shot 7-of-9 from the free throw line.
Dean scored a team-high 21 points in a 94-71 loss to New Mexico Highlands. He made four three-point field goals and converted on 5-of-6 free throws.
In the three games combined, Dean averaged 25 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He shot 48 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line. Dean leads the league in scoring with 23.6 points per game average. The Crimson Wave are 2-6 on the year so far.
Men Lose Despite Good Shooting
11/21/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team shot 43% from the field in the second round game of the George B. Boedecker Foundation Classic against New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys today despite losing 94-71.
The Crimson Wave came out strong in the first half trailing by only six in the first eight minutes. After a back and forth battle over the next five minutes the Cowboys opened up the game to a 17 point lead. 1-The first half would remain that way and the Crimson Wave went to the locker room down 51-34.
The second half the Crimson Wave fought tough but could not overcome the deficit. Junior Keith Dean led the Crimson Wave with 21 points. Wilfredo Escobar and Fares Saqf-Alhait had 11 and 10 points each.
The Crimson Wave (2-6) will take the next two days to prepare for newly added CCAC Division 1 opponent Holy Cross College. The game will be played on Wednesday November 25 at 7:00 pm at the Recreation Athletic Facility on the campus of CCSJ.

11/21/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team will play in the second round of the George B. Boedecker Foundation Classic today at 4:00 pm. The Crimson Wave (2-5) will take on NCAA Division 2 opponent New Mexico Highlands University (1-1). The Crimson Wave are coming off a first round loss to host Fort Lewis College while New Mexico Highlands knocked off Grand Canyon State University yesterday in the first round of the classic. Today’s game will be broadcast live on the B2 Network.
Shooting Proves Tough at Fort Lewis
11/20/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team had a rough shooting night in the opening round of the George B. Boedecker Foundation Classic tonight against host Fort Lewis College Skyhawks .
The Crimson Wave fell short shooting just 25.9% from the field in the 87-56 loss. After a slow start falling behind 22-10 in the first 8 minutes of play the Crimson Wave started a small run on a Robert Pogue layup. Keith Dean rounded out the run with a three point play getting fouled on a drive from the right wing. After a series of Skyhawk baskets the Crimson Wave found themselves down 39-22 at the half.
The second half started much the same way as the first and the men found themselves down 47-22 early on. The Crimson Wave struggled to get back in the game. The Skyhawks opened up the game taking it 87-56.
Dean led the Crimson Wave with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Wilfredo Escobar added 9 points and 6 rebounds for the men.

Dean’s 37 Lift the Crimson Wave Over Michigan-Dearborn
11/18/09 - Keith Dean scored a season high 37 points in the Crimson Wave’s 84-79 defeat of the University of Michigan-Dearborn tonight to improve the Crimson Wave’s record to 2-4.
The Crimson Wave came out strong tonight jumping to an early 16-7 in the first six minutes of play on a Dean drive that turned to a three point play. The Crimson Wave took control during the next ten minutes of play increasing their lead to as many as 12 with three minutes left in the half. After a series of jump shots the by Michigan-Dearborn the Crimson Wave went to the locker room with a 6 point lead 41-35.
The second half started much like the first and a strong Crimson Wave offense increased their lead to nine in the first eight minutes of play. The Crimson Wave’s lead would not last and the game was tied at 69 a piece with 6:30 left in play. The Crimson Wave hung onto a one point lead from a CJ Montgomery Free throw in the final minute of play, making Michigan-Dearborn foul. The Crimson Wave buried their free throws to hold on and collect the win.
Wilfredo Escobar and CJ Montgomery added 16 and 13 points respectively. Robert Pogue pulled down 10 rebounds for the men.
The Crimson Wave (2-4) will travel to Fort Lewis College this weekend to compete in the Fort Lewis Classic.
CCU Sinks Waves Ship
11/15/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball traveled south to the Queen City to take on the Eagles of Cincinnati Christian University with the hope of finding victory.
The game began with each team exchanging multiple three point baskets and then the Eagles took advantage of out rebounding CCSJ to create an early lead of 17-6. The first half would get no better as the Eagles continue to dominate their home court leading into the half with a 20 point lead over the Crimson Wave.
Junior guard Wilfredo Escobar came out in the second half with the attempt of bringing the Crimson Wave back by rattling off a few key shots that would eventually decrease the Eagles lead to 10. The Crimson Wave would get no closer and the Eagles regain momentum and would extend their lead to 19 points with the final score ending 103-90. Escobar led the Crimson Wave with 30 points with sophomore CJ Montgomery chipping in 18.
The Crimson Wave 1-4 overall will host the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday November 18 in a 7:00 pm game at the Recreation Athletic Facility on the campus of CCSJ.
Men Drop Game to Cougars Despite Good Night at the Line
11/10/09 - The Crimson Wave men’s basketball lost to CCAC division one opponent St. Xavier University tonight 81-65.
The Crimson Wave trailed by only two at the half 41-39 after shooting 90 percent from the free-throw line. After a slow start in the second half the Crimson Wave fell behind by 15 despite shooting 85.7 percent from the line. The men never got back into rhythm falling to the Cougars. Wilfredo Escobar led the men with 15 points. Robert Pogue and Keith Dean dropped in 13 a piece.
The Crimson Wave (1-3) will travel to Cincinnati Christian on Saturday November 14th for a 3:00 pm game.
Dean Makes His Mark at the Line
11/11/09 - Crimson Wave men’s basketball player Keith Dean earned Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for the week ending on Sunday November 8th.
Dean made his mark on the week with two twenty plus point games. On November 4th the Crimson Wave took on CCAC Division 1 opponent the University of St. Francis where Dean poured in 25 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Three days later Dean went for 28 points against Malone University also grabbing 11 rebounds and three assists. To cap it off Dean was perfect from the free throw line going 13-13.
Free Throw Shooting Cost the Crimson Wave
11/7/09 – The Malone University Pioneers flooded the Crimson Wave men’s basketball team today 85-76. Keith Dean tried to keep the Crimson Wave afloat with 28 points and 11 rebounds.
After a slow start and a ten point deficit in the first eight minutes of play, the Crimson Wave made an 8 point run capped off by a CJ Montgomery jumper to put themselves back in the game 31-28. The final minutes of the first half would end the same as it started and the men headed to the locker rooms trailing by ten at the half.
The second half would see the Crimson Wave’s first lead of the day at the fifteen minute mark, 53-52 on a Dean jump shot. After a series of back and forth scoring the Pioneers opened up the game to six points and never looked back, despite eight points from Dean in the final three minutes of play. Wilfredo Escobar added 17 points for the men.

Men Suffer First Loss
11/4/09 - The Crimson Wave men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season tonight 94-84 to the University of St. Francis despite an 11 point first half lead.
The Crimson Wave came out strong and took an early 13-2 lead in the first three and a half minutes of play. St. Francis finally tied the game at 25 after a string of three point baskets. After a back and fourth battle in the final minutes of the first half the Cirmson Wave headed to the locker room trailing by three, 46-43.
The Crimson Wave would take the lead twice in the second half with the second coming at 55-53 in the first five minutes play. The Fighting Saints took over in the second half allowing the Crimson Wave to only get as close as four the rest of the half.
Junior Keith Dean led the men tonight with 25 points.

10/31/09 - The Crimson Wave men's basketball team defeated Silver Lake College in there home opener today 84-71. Wilfredo Escobar led the men with 22 points.
Saqf-AlHait Named to Jordan National Team
9/8/09 - Crimson Wave senior basketball player Fares Saqf-AlHait has been named to the Jordan U23 National Team.
Saqf-AlHait averaged 7.9 ppg and 2.3 rpg per game for the Crimson Wave last season.
Hammond Signs with the Crimson Wave
8/7/09- Terrance Hammond from Hammond, Indiana has signed his national letter of intent to play basketball at Calumet College of Saint Joseph.
The 6’4 forward joins the Crimson Wave after a successful prep career at George Rogers Clark High School. As a junior, Hammond led his team to a third consecutive sectional championship and a 15-8 record. As a senior, the hardworking forward averaged 8 points and 6 rebounds per game which led to an All- Conference selection and a spot in the East/West All Star Game.
“Terrance is a great kid and a talented basketball player,” said Head coach Ryan Sexson. “His work ethic and ability to rebound the basketball will help our team immediately.” “He knows what it takes to win and will be a great addition to our basketball program.”
Hobart Point Guard Signs with Crimson Wave
7/17/09 - Devon Key has signed his national letter of intent to play  basketball for Head Coach Ryan Sexson and Calumet College of Saint Joseph. The 5-10 point guard comes to CCSJ after a successful prep career at Hobart High School where he averaged 14 points and 7.5 assists per game in his senior season. Key led his Hobart team to the championship game of the sectional which was the schools first trip to the final game since 1972. For these efforts, Key was named to the first team all Northwest Crossroads Conference and honorable mention All Area team.
“Devon is a great kid who will represent our institution to the highest level,” said Head Coach Ryan Sexson. “He has exceptional speed and understands how to run a team from the point guard position.”
Devon chose Calumet College because of the coaching staff and the opportunity to help win a championship. “I like Coach Sexson and the players in the program, said Key.” “I look forward to helping us win any way that I can.”

Kouts Big Man Signs with Crimson Wave Basketball
5/4/09 - Brad Parks of Kouts, Indiana has become the fourth member of the Calumet College of Saint Joseph men's basketball team's 2009 recruiting class.
Parks is a 6-6 forward who is known for his scoring and rebounding ability. As a senior at Kouts High School, Parks averaged 20 points per game while hauling in 9 rebounds per game. His best scoring effort of his senior season came against Rensselaer Central High School where the versatile forward scored 43 points in the win. Parks shot 46-percent from behind the arc and over 80 percent from the free throw line on the year. For these efforts, Parks was named to the All-Porter County Conference Team.
Parks chose the Crimson Wave because of the opportunity to play for a great basketball program and a chance to play with former high school teammate Kyle Mueller. “I really liked Coach Sexson and it will be great to play with Kyle again,” said Parks. “I think this is a great opportunity and I am very excited to get started.”
“Brad is going to help our basketball team in a number of ways,” said Head Coach Ryan Sexson. “He can play on the block as well as on the perimeter.” He is a good athlete that is only going to get better as he continues to develop.” “Brad’s best basketball is definitely ahead of him.”

Munster Standout Signs with Crimson Wave Basketball
5/4/09 - Head coach Ryan Sexson has announced that Matt Gaskey will continue his basketball career at Calumet College of Saint Joseph. The 6-4 shooting guard joins the Crimson Wave after a successful career at  Munster High School where he helped the Mustangs win both the 2009 Sectional and Regional championships before falling in the Semi State to Fort Wayne Snider. In his 3 years of varsity action, Gaskey helped Munster win 3 conference championships and a combined 61 games. The sharpshooter averaged 8 points per game and shot nearly 40 percent from the field in his senior season.
Gaskey chose the Crimson wave because of the great basketball opportunity and the close knit program. “I liked the overall atmosphere of CCSJ,” said Gaskey. I really like the guys on the team and the Coaching staff was very well organized.” “I feel like this is the right place for me.”

Spaulding Continues Career with the Wave
4/14/09 - Eric Spaulding of Valparaiso, Indiana has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for Coach Ryan Sexson and Calumet College of Saint Joseph. The 6-5 Forward joins the Wave after a succesfull playing career at Morgan Township High School where he led his team to back to back sectional championships. Spaulding nearly averaged a double double in his senior season at Morgan averaging 12 points and 9 rebounds per game. He was named to the All Porter County Conference First Team in both his junior and senior seasons and was invited to play in the Hoosier Hysteria All Star Game.
Spaulding chose Calumet College of Saint Joseph because of the solid basketball reputation and the quality people at the college. “CCSJ has had some quality basketball teams recently and I really like how the college and the team were so close knit, said Spaulding.” Calumet College has a great small school atmosphere and just seemed like the perfect fit for me.”

Mueller Chooses the Wave
4/14/09 - Kyle Mueller of Kouts, Indiana has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Coach Ryan Sexson and Calumet College of Saint Joseph. Kyle joins the Wave after one season at Iowa Central College in Fort Dodge, Iowa where he saw action in 20 games last season.
Mueller had a standout high school career for Kouts where he led his team to a conference championship as a senior. The 6-0 guard averaged 15.5 points and 4 assists per game which was good enough to earn him a spot on the All Porter County Conference First Team and an invitation to the Hoosier Hysteria All-Star game.
Mueller chose Calumet College of Saint Joseph because of the family-like atmosphere of the college and the basketball team. “CCSJ seemed like a really good place to play,” said Mueller. “I really like the players there and the team has a lot of good chemistry, and a really good coach.”
Mueller will major in Elementary Education at Calumet College of Saint Joseph and will have three years of eligibility remaining. |
