Ryan Sexson enters his seventh season as head coach at Calumet College of Saint Joseph. Sexson was named the fourth head coach in Calumet College of Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball history in 2007. His 2011-2012 team finished 17-13 and advanced to the championship game of the Chicago Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The Crimson Wave has been very good defensively under Sexson as his teams have ranked in the top ten nationally in multiple defensive categories.
Sexson has been successful on the recruiting front as well having recruited eight CCAC All-Conference players two CCAC Freshman of the Year and two NAIA All-Americans. The Crimson Wave has also produced three CCAC All-Academic student-athletes under Sexson’s direction.
The Crimson Wave coach came to CCSJ after spending a year as the top assistant at his alma mater Purdue University-Calumet and one season at Griffith High School.
As a prep player at Lafayette Jefferson High School, Sexson led his team to the Final Four, was a member of Indiana's Top 40 Workout, and earned a scholarship to Valparaiso University. During his college career, Sexson was a member of the 1999 Mid-Con Conference regular season and tournament championship team that earned a trip to the NCAA tournament before transferring to Purdue University Calumet. At PUC Sexson was an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention in 2002. Sexson was also named to the Chicago Collegiate Athletic All-Conference team twice and is the school’s career leader in three-point field goals and career points per game.
Sexson comes from a strong basketball family as his grandfather Joe Sexson is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and was an assistant coach at Purdue University before taking the head coaching job at Butler University. Ryan's father Rick Sexson is a former player and coach at Butler University.
A native of Lafayette, In, Sexson is a 2003 graduate of Purdue University-Calumet with a bachelor’s degree in Media and Communications. Coach Sexson, his wife Sarah, and son Jace reside in Schererville, IN.
Calumet College of Saint Joseph head men’s basketball coach Ryan Sexson has announced the hiring of Eddie Fierek as an assistant coach for the Crimson Wave.
“I am really excited about the ways in which Eddie can impact our basketball program,” said Sexson. “He has nine years of head coaching experience and is well connected throughout the state of Indiana.” “Eddie brings a great passion and understanding for the game of basketball and I think our players will really enjoy working with him both on and off the court.”
“I am very excited to join the Calumet College of Saint Joseph basketball staff and be able to work alongside Coach Sexson and the student-athletes in the program,” said Fierek. “Coach Sexson has a great program here at CCSJ and I am thankful for the opportunity to help this team compete at an elite level.”
Fierek, a native of Indianapolis, IN, comes to CCSJ after a very successful career as head basketball coach at Highland High School (Highland, IN) and the Bishop Noll Institute (Hammond, IN). While at Highland, Fierek led the Trojans to a conference championship and two sectional title appearances. During his tenure at the Bishop Noll Institute, Fierek led his team to a conference championship and a sectional title. He helped develop Bishop Noll guard Gary Patterson into an Indiana All-Star in 2005.
Prior to coaching in Northwest Indiana, Fierek was an assistant at IUPUI while finishing his student teaching. He has also coached Jr. High and AAU basketball in Central Indiana and assisted many summer basketball camps at Wright State University, IUPUI, the University of Dayton, West Point, and Xavier University.
