Wrestling Finishes at Nationals

3/7/10 – The Crimson Wave wrestling team finished their season at the NAIA Wrestling National Championships this weekend.  Sophomore Artie Grubba placed in the top 12 for the Crimson Wave.  “We obviously didn’t do as well as we wanted to. This is a young team and a first year program and the guys really worked hard.  This will give the guys a lot of experience for the coming years and more importantly a great life experience. “ Said Head Coach Leroy Vega.

Senior Dan Bedoy lost his opening match of the tournament, sustaining an injury that would keep him out the rest of the tournament.   Sophomore Chad Allen was also defeated his first match of the tourney.  Freshmen Nick Fouts and Dustin Boyd were also defeated in their first two match ups. 
   
After a first round bye Derek Allen won his first match of tournament over Dan Hutcheson (DWU) 5-2.   Allen suffered his first lost in the third round against Byron Kuylen (UGF) 6-2.   Allen would end his run against Andy Shoultz (CU), being pinned a 1:14 into the match up. 

Grubba was pinned in his first round match by John Bates (SOU) 2:02 into the match.  Grubba came out his second match focused and pinned Alex Will (MCIA) in 1:04.   Grubba would pin Zach Marshall (LWC) in his second win of the tournament in just a 1:39.  Grubba’s run would end against Jeremy Colbert (BAC) 9-5.

This marks the end of the 2009-2010 Crimson Wave wrestling season.  “I am excited for next season.  We have a lot of good wrestlers returning, along with adding some great talent to the room.  The program is only heading up and I can’t wait for the future.”  Said Vega.

Women’s Tennis Sinks the Eagles

3/6/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s tennis team sunk the Judson University Eagles 8-1 this weekend.

Christina Sendejas and Lizeth Quezada won their doubles match 8-6.  Ashley Cherry and Jessica Orozco escaped their doubles match with a win 9-7 while Angelica Guzman and Angela Hughes were perfect winning 8-0. 

Sendejas defeated Danielle Sum 6-6 and 6-4, Cherry defeated Kristen Kress 6-0, 6-2 and Hughes dfeated Melissa Vivian 6-0, and 6-4.  Guzman and Murphy each controlled their match the whole way with Guzman wining over Angela Schultz 6-0, 6-1 and Murphy cruising past Averi Kirchner 6-0, 6-0. 

The Crimson Wave tennis team will host Adrian College Wednesday March 10 at 10:00 am.  The match will be held at Match Point Tennis Club in Griffith, IN.

Tennis Stays Close with Judson

3/6/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s tennis team stayed close with the Judson University Eagles this weekend.  The Crimson Wave were defeated 6-3 in close fought battle.

Julian Martinez and Kyle Kocsis took a win in the doubles portion on a Judson forfeit.  Tommy Cherry defeated Judson’s Jesse Perez 6-3, 6-0 and Kocsis again got his win on a forfeit.  Stephan McClain and Victor Villegas each took their singles match to three.

The Crimson Wave tennis team will host Adrian College Wednesday March 10 at 10:00 am.  The match will be held at Match Point Tennis Club in Griffith, IN.

Hinton Sets School Records at Nationals

3/5/10 – Crimson Wave men’s track and field runner Randy Hinton set two school records today in the 200m and 400m runs at the NAIA National Track and Field Championships in Johnson City, TN.
In the 400m run Hinton ran a time of 49.67s, finishing 15th overall in the preliminaries.  In the 200m run Hinton set the new mark at 21.99s again landing him 15th overall in the preliminaries.
  
“Randy definitely came out today and left it all out there.  He came out prepared and focused and it showed.   He ran a great race in the 200m today.  We are really excited to concentrate on the 200m in the outdoor season. “ said Head Coach Don Reed

This marks the end of the indoor track and field season for the Crimson Wave men.  The men will open the outdoor season April 3-4 at the Polheim Invitational in West Lafayette, IN.

Men’s Track National Championships

3/4/10 – Crimson Wave men’s track and field runner Randy Hinton is currently in Johnson City, TN at the NAIA National Track and Field Championships.

Hinton will run the semi-finals of the 200m and 400m runs on Friday March 5th.   The 400m run will take place at 3:10 pm and the 200m run taking place at 6:25 pm.

Hinton qualified for the NAIA National Championships at the Taylor University Invite on the February 6th in the 400m and 200m runs. In the 400m run Hinton ran a 50.24 meeting the national b standard for qualifying. A few races later Hinton won the 200m run in a time of 22.55 seconds to give him the national b standard.

Wrestling at NAIA National Championships

3/3/10 – The Crimson Wave wrestling team will open the NAIA National Championships at 1:00 pm tomorrow at Oklahoma City University.

Sophomore Chad Allen will wrestle Michael Schulz (GVU) in his first match.  Freshman Nick Fouts (141 lb) will face Kyle Wirkuty of (SOU) while teammate freshman Derek Allen (149 lb )received a first round bye.  Senior Dan Bedoy (174 lb) will also receive a first bye.  Freshman Dustin Boyd (184 lb) will face Mark Peiffer (DC) and to round out the Crimson Wave heavy weight Artie Grubba will start out against John Bates (SOU).

“I am really excited to be here.  These guys have worked hard all season and deserve this opportunity.  We have had a strong week of practice and have put ourselves in a great position to do well. “ said coach Leroy Vega.

Hinton Wins 200m at Fred Wilt

2/27/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s track and field team competed at the Fred Wilt Invitational this weekend at Anderson University in Anderson, IN.

Randy Hinton won the 200m run in a time of 22.66.  Richard Gutierrez set a school record in the 5000m run with a time of 16:01.5.  Gutierrez finished 6th in the race.  Jordon Harris finished 5th in the 1000m run.  Robbie Loop finished in 6th place in the 3000m Steeplechase.

Hinton will run in the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Johnson City, TN.  

Crimson Wave Roll on With One Point Win

2/25/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team advances to conference championship game win a thrilling one point victory, 70-69, over cross-town rival Purdue University – Calumet. 

The first half started off slow the Peregrines of PUC grabbing an early 9-3 lead at the 15:06 mark of the game.  The Crimson Wave would chip away and eventually tie the game 16-16 with 10:20 left on the clock due to sophomore Mehgan Jagielski’s three three-point buckets.  Both teams would exchange baskets during the rest of the first half with Purdue Calumet taking a four point half-time lead 37-33.  Senior Sarah Keilman led the Peregrines with 14 first half points while junior Jackie Feldpaush carried the team with 11 points, she would finish the night with 17 points and 5 rebounds.

The second half of the heated contest became hotter as the Crimson Wave would take their first lead of the game 51-45 at the 14:57 mark of the half.  Junior Chabria Survillian (11 second half points, 14 for the game) and Desiree Miller (12 rebounds for the game) contributed to the surge made by the Crimson Wave.  Miller would also shut down the inside presence of Keilman by only allowing her to score four second-half points.  The Peregrines continued to battle against the cross-town foes with sophomore Stephanie Beck scoring 15 second half points, 21 for the game to led all scorers.  PUC would take a four point lead, 64-60, with 5:57 remaining in the game.  CCSJ’s Tisa Carter would be the key player in the second half as she collected 10 of her team high 13 rebounds to prevent Purdue – Calumet any second chance opportunities late in the game.  As time ticked away and each team swapping one point leads junior Lisa Upshaw (10 points, 7 rebounds) stole a Peregrine pass and drove the length of the court to give the Crimson Wave a one point led 70-69 with 35 seconds remaining in the game.  Purdue – Calumet had one more chance to take the game from the host CCSJ but a missed three point basket by Beck and then an under the basket layup by Keilman was short denying the Peregrines a chance to the win from CCSJ.    The Crimson Wave was able to run out the clock to seal the one point victory and advance to the conference championship on Saturday afternoon against Cardinal Stritch University. 

The win over Purdue – Calumet gives the Crimson Wave their fifteenth victory of the season.  The victory by the women’s team also marks the first conference championship appearance for Calumet College of St. Joseph during its ten year history as an athletic department. 

USBC Sectional Pairings Announced

2/24/10 – The USBC has announced the pairings for the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship sectionals.

The Crimson Wave men have been assigned to the Peoria Sectional.  The sectional will be held at Landmark Lanes in Peoria, IL.  The sectional includes the current No. 1 team in Wichita State University, No. 7 Newman University, No. 13 Wright State University.  The Crimson Wave men are currently ranked No. 10 and will look to improve upon last year’s 4thplace finish.

The Crimson Wave women’s team will travel south to the Chattanooga Sectional held at Holiday Bowl Brainerd in Chattanooga, TN.  The Crimson Wave women’s team is currently ranked 21st.  Sectional opponents include No. 1 Central Florida, No. 6 Lindenwood, and No. 9 Maryland-Eastern Shore.  The Crimson Wave women finished 4th last year in the Fairview Heights sectional. 

The Crimson Wave men and women will compete at the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship sectionals on March 11-14.

Men Dominate the Peregrines to Advance

2/23/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team dominated the Purdue University Calumet Peregrines tonight in the opening round of the CCAC tournament 85-64.

The Crimson Wave came out on fire tonight as CJ Montgomery hit back to back three pointers to start the game.  At the 14:48 mark Wilfredo Escobar drained a three from the top of the key to start a 26-8 run that gave the Crimson Wave a 21 point advantage.  The Crimson Wave never let up and took a 25 point lead into the locker room at the half 50-25.  Escobar scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half.

The Crimson Wave came out in the second half with the same intensity shooting 48.5% from the field.  Robert Pogue grabbed 6 second half rebounds to go along with 9 Keith Dean points.
Escobar led four double digit scorers for the Crimson Wave with 19 points.  Montgomery threw in 16, Antonio Hurt 15 and Dean 14 points.

The Crimson Wave will advance to the second round of the CCAC tournament, traveling to Milwaukee, WI on Thursday February 25th to face the tournament’s No. 1 seed Cardinal Stritch University. 

Escobar Named CCAC Player of the Week

2/23/10 – Crimson Wave guard Wilfredo Escobar recorded two double-doubles last week and missed a triple double by two assists against Purdue University-Calumet. For his performances, Escobar has been named CCAC Men's Basketball Division II Player of the Week for the week ending February 21.

In an 85-64 win over Purdue University-North Central, Escobar had 18 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. He made 6-of-12 shots, including 3-of-6 from the three-point line. He also converted on 3-of-4 free throws.

CCSJ came up short against Purdue-Calumet, 78-74, but Escobar put together another great game with 15 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. He hit all four of his free throw attempts.

In the two games combined, Escobar averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 10.0 assists per game. He averages 3.6 assists per game which ranks fifth in the CCAC.

The Crimson Wave and Purdue-Calumet will be battling again on Tuesday night in the first round of the CCAC Tournament.

Upshaw Named CCAC Player of the Week

2/23/10 - With the CCAC Tournament's No. 2 seed on the line,  the Crimson Wave and Purdue-Calumet battled on Saturday for the high seed and a first-round bye. CCSJ slipped by with a 65-63 win and junior guard Lisa Upshaw was outstanding as she led the Crimson Wave to their highest CCAC finish in program history.   For her performance, Upshaw has been named the CCAC Women's Basketball Division II Player of the Week for the week ending February 21.

Upshaw had a game-high 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She hit 5-of-8 three-point field goals and converted on 4-of-5 free throws. She also had eight rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and four steals.

Upshaw averages 14.0 points per game which ranks fourth in the CCAC.

After not winning a game in either of the last two seasons, the Crimson Wave finished with a 5-5 conference record to finish tied for second in the standings. The Crimson Wave will host the winner of the game between Trinity Christian and Purdue-Calumet on Thursday at 7:00 pm.

4x200m Relay Wins at Trine

2/22/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s track and field team competed at the Trine Invitational this past weekend at Trine University in Angola, IN.

The 4x200m relay team of Nate Haverstock, Randy Hinton, Tom Moore, and Joe Efantis finished first overall with a time of 1:33.04.  The winning time also sets a school record in the event.    The 4x400m relay team of Haverstock, Hinton, Moore, and Efantis finished second overall with a time of 3:28.97.

The Crimson Wave track team will run their final indoor event of the season at the Fred Wilt Invitational in Anderson, IN on February 27th. 

Ladies Defeat PUC, Take 2nd in CCAC

2/20/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team defeated cross town rival and CCAC opponent the Purdue University Calumet Peregrines 65-63.

The women came out strong jumping to a six point lead seven minutes into play.  The ladies lead did not last long and the Peregrines tied the game at 13 points apiece with 8:54 remaining in the half.  Over the next seven minutes of play the Crimson Wave would go on a 20-5 run starting with Joselyn Gray field goal.  Jackie Feldpausch would pour in eight of the ladies points along with two three pointers from Lisa Upshaw and four more points from Gray.   The game slowed for the last minute of play and the Crimson Wave went to the locker room ahead by 13, 35-22.

Throughout the second half the Peregrines chipped away at the Crimson Wave lead, though never taking a lead of their own.   Upshaw would pour in 12 points over the first 10 minutes of play to keep the Crimson Wave ahead.   With 4:04 remaining in the half the ladies found themselves clinging to a four point lead.  Feldpausch scored the Crimson Wave’s next eight points but the Peregrines would answer each time.  With 19 seconds left in play the Peregrines Jennifer Britton hit a three from the wing to cut the Crimson Wave lead to one.    The Peregrines fouled Tisa Carter in the attempt to gain back possession.  Carter would hit one of two from the line.  The Peregrines would come up with the rebound and headed to the offensive end.  Moneva Fields came up with her only steal of the night and the Crimson Wave held on for the win. 

Upshaw led the Crimson Wave with 25 points along with Feldpausch’s 20 points.   The Crimson Wave victory sealed their second place conference finish and a first round bye in the CCAC Tournament.

The ladies will host a second round conference tournament game on Thursday February 25th at 7:00 pm. 

Men Fall Short at Home against PUC

2/20/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team came up short on Saturday against cross town rival and CCAC opponent the Purdue University Calumet Peregrines 78-74. 

The first half started slow for the Crimson Wave as they fell behind four 6-2 in the first two minutes of play.  The Crimson Wave would not let the Peregrines lead last for long grabbing their own four point lead off of back to back jumpers from Antonio Hurt and Keith Dean.  The final minutes of the half would be a bitter back and fourth game of shooting that landed Hurt sixteen first half points going 8-11 from the field and Crimson Wave a one point half time lead, 34-33. 

Over the first minutes of play in the second half Hurt and Wilfredo Escobar took control of the game leading the Crimson Wave to a 10-0 run to a score of 43-33.  The Crimson Wave would hold their lead much of the second half until a small Peregrine run gave PUC a one point lead 54-53 near the 8 minute mark.  The Peregrines would build a small lead of their own making the game 62-57 with 5:50 left in play.  Escobar would answer back burying a three and two free throws to bring the game to its seventh tie of the night at 65 apiece with 3:21 on the clock. 

The Crimson Wave found them in a back in forth game and down one point with 39 seconds reaming.   After a missed Crimson Wave three the men fouled to gain possession.  The Peregrines split on from the free throw line and time ran out for the Crimson Wave. 

The men were led by 27 points and 7 rebounds from Hurt going 12-17 from the field and 3-3 from the charity stripe.    Escobar added 15 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds for the men.  Escobar made good on all four free throw attempts. 

The Crimson Wave (11-19, 4-8) will host Purdue Calumet in the opening round of the CCAC tournament on Tuesday February 23rd at 7:00 pm.  The game will be played on Alumni Court on the campus of CCSJ.

Men Sink Purdue North Central

2/17/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team sunk the Purdue University North Central Panthers tonight 85-64.

The Crimson Wave were led by 24 points from Keith Dean, 18 points from Wilfredo Escobar, 16 and 11 points from C.J. Montgomery and Robert Pogue.

The Crimson Wave (11-18, 4-7) will host Purdue University Calumet Saturday February 20th at 3:00 pm in the final regular season conference game.  This game will honor the Crimson Wave seniors along with being a school wide event in homecoming. 

Men Compete at Hoosier Hills and Wildcat Invites
        
2/13/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s track and field team competed at the Hoosier Hills Invitational on Friday night in Bloomington, IN and Saturday at the Wildcat Invitational on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University. 

Richard Gutierrez set a school record at the Hoosier Hills meet in the 3000m run with a time of 9:09.28.  The   4x400m relay team of Joe Efantis, Tom Moore, Randy Hinton, Nate Haverstock also set a school record finishing in 3:25.96.

The Crimson Wave men will have their last chance to qualify for the NAIA National meet this Friday February 19 and Saturday February 20 when they travel to the Trine Invitational in Angola, IN and the Silverstein Invite in Ann Arbor, MI. 

Ladies Take Loss to Stritch

2/13/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team took a conference loss to the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves 75-48.

The ladies were led by 14 points from Lisa Upshaw and 11 points from Jackie Feldpausch.    

The Crimson Wave (13-16) will play their last regular season game on February 20 at 1:00 pm against cross town CCAC rival Purdue University Calumet at Alumni Court on the campus of CCSJ. 

Men Fall to No. 9 Stritch 
             
2/13/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team fell to NAIA No. 9 the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves 79-66.

The men were led by 14 points from Robert Pogue and 12 points from Antonio Hurt.

The Crimson Wave (10-18) will travel to Purdue University North Central Wednesday February 17 for a 7:00 pm CCAC conference match up. 

Men Take Hard Loss to Eagles   

2/10/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team lost to conference rival the Judson University Eagles 83-62.

The men came out strong starting the game on a 7-0 run with points from Wilfredo Escobar, Brannon Jones, and Antonio Hurt.  This would be the last Crimson Wave lead of the night as the Eagles made their own run taking the lead with 15:03 left in the half.  The Crimson Wave went to the locker room down 39-20 at the half.

The men made a couple of runs in the second half getting the Eagles lead down to 13 points with 14:50 left in the game.  The Eagles slowly built the lead back to 19 points over the next 8 minutes of play.  The Crimson Wave’s second run of the half brought the lead down to 16 points but the men could not hold on and gave the game to the Eagles. 

The Crimson Wave were led by 22 points and four assists from Escobar.  The men will head to Cardinal Stritch University on Saturday February 13 for a 3:00 pm CCAC match up. 

Ladies Lose to Rival Judson

2/10/10 - The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team lost to conference rival Judson University 62-52 after having a seven point halftime lead.

The ladies jumped out to an early seven point lead 12-5 at the 13:35 mark in the first half after four straight free throws by Moneva Fields and two from Jackie Feldpausch.   Judson slowly chipped away and took a one point lead 17-16 with 5:55 remaining.  The Crimson Wave would not let the Eagles lead last long and went into the break ahead 30-23.  The Crimson Wave were 14-15 in the first half from the free throw line. 

The second half the ladies came out to a slow start and gave the lead to Judson early on.  The Crimson Wave would trail the rest of the half giving the game to Judson. 
The ladies were led by 10 points apiece from Feldpausch and Lisa Upshaw.

The Crimson Wave will travel to Milwaukee, WI on Saturday February 13 to take on Cardinal Stritch University in a 1:00 pm match up. 

Upshaw Named CCAC Player of the Week

2/10/10 - The Crimson Wave won two CCAC women's basketball games last week as they quickly climbed up to third-place in the standings.  Junior guard Lisa Upshaw (East Chicago, IN) led the team in scoring in both of those victories and has been named CCAC Women's Basketball Division II Player of the Week for the week ending February 7.

In a close game against Trinity International, the score was tied with 15 seconds remaining. The Crimson Wave immediately got the ball down the court to Upshaw who missed a layup from the left side of the basket. Upshaw grabbed her own rebound and banked it in with two seconds left to give the Crimson Wave a two point lead 75-73 and eventually the victory. Upshaw led the Crimson Wave with 23 points and six rebounds. She also added three assists, one block and one steal. She made all eight of the free throws she attempted.

In another tight game, this time versus Trinity Christian, Calumet came out on top once again, 53-46. Upshaw led with 16 points and six rebounds, to go along with four assists, a block and a steal. She was once again perfect at the free throw line going 4-for-4.

In the two games combined, Upshaw averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists. She was 12-for-12 from the free throw line.

On the season, Upshaw is averaging 13.8 points per game which ranks fourth in the CCAC. She is shooting 80.7 percent from the free throw line which is the league's second-best mark.  
The Crimson Wave are 13-14 overall and 4-3 in the CCAC.

Ladies Finish 11th at McKendree

2/8/10 - The Crimson Wave Women's Bowling Team finished in 11th place this weekend after competing in the McKendree Baker Challenge hosted by McKendree University.

“The 40-game baker format provided us with the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming sectional qualifier which also has an all baker game format. Although we were not pleased with our overall performance, we will build on the lessons learned to hopefully qualify for our third consecutive National Finals appearance next month.”  Said Coach Washington on the competition

Men Finish 12th Overall

2/7/10 - The Crimson Wave men's bowling team finished 12th at the McKendree College Baker Challenge. The men struggled in day one before settling in to day two.

The men will take a week off to prepare for the Hoosier Classic held in Indianapolis, IN on February 20-21.

Hinton Qualifies for Nationals
 
2/6/10 – Crimson Wave men’s track and field runner Randy Hinton qualified for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships held at the Mini Dome in Johnson City, TN on March 4-6, 2010.

Hinton Qualified today at the Taylor University Invite in the 400m and 200m runs. In the 400m run Hinton ran a 50.24 meeting the national b standard for qualifying. A few races later Hinton won the 200m run in a time of 22.55 seconds to give him the national b standard and trip to Johnson City.
 
Hinton is the second runner in Crimson Wave history to qualify for the NAIA Track & Field National Championships.
Fred Olaosebikan won the 800m run in 2:00.68 for a personal best in the event. 

Jordan Harris broke his own school record in the shot put, throwing 9.96m.  Richard Gutierrez added his name to the record books in the 3000m run with a time of 9:09.62.  Daniel Medina ran a 8.68s in the 55m high hurdles for a school record and the 4X200m relay team ran a 1:38.44 for a record.  The relay team consisted of Nate Haverstock, Fred Olaosebikan, Tyler Stiscak and Ptah El-Aton.

The men will run their next meet at the Hoosier Hills Invite in Bloomington, IN on February 12, 2010.

Men Take Loss in Final Seconds to Trolls 
            
2/6/10 - The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team lost in the  final five seconds tonight to the Trinity Christian College Trolls 67-66 in a CCAC conference match up.

The Crimson Wave found themselves with a 9 point lead at the half 35-26 after shooting 7-7 from the free throw line in the first half of play. 

The Trolls cut the Crimson Wave lead to two at the 18:32 mark in the second on back to back jump shots.   The men pushed the lead back to nine on Wilfredo Escobar and Jon Contos three pointers.  The Crimson Wave would maintain a solid lead over the next eight minutes of play until a small Trolls run cut the men’s lead to one. 

Escobar would answer back with a baseline layup for a three point Crimson Wave lead.  After trading a series of free throws the Crimson Wave clung to a 2 point lead, 61-59 with 6:11 remaining play.  Contos hit his final shot of the night with 5:16 on the clock to make it a 63-59 Crimson Wave lead.  The Trolls Will Bruinsma answered back with a four point conversion to tie the game at 63.   Escobar brought the lead back to three on a make from behind the arc with 4:25 left.  The game would go scoreless until the 1:10 mark when the Trolls Matt Buren hit a short jumper to make it a one point game 66-65.  After a Crimson Wave foul the Trolls knocked down both free throws for a one point lead 67-66.  With 1.5 seconds left Escobar drove the left side of the floor and pulled up from half court, the ball seemingly banked in and popped out for a Crimson Wave defeat.

Escobar led the men with 15 points while Keith Dean and Contos had 13 and 11 points each.

Ladies Edge Out Trolls in Pink Zone Game

2/6/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team edged out the Trinity Christian College Trolls today, 53-46, in the 2nd Annual WBCA Pink Zone game for the Crimson Wave. 
The Crimson Wave fell behind 15-12 with 7:50 left in a slow moving first half of play.  The lead changed four times afterward and ended in a tie at 22 a piece to end the half.

The ladies came out of the break on a 6-0 run with baskets from Lydia Aceviz, Lisa Upshaw and Moneva Fields.  After a series of back and forth scoring the Crimson Wave increased the lead to 9 points and a Jackie Feldpausch three point conversion.   The Crimson Wave lead became 11, 41-30, with 12:07 left when Joselyn Gray hit a six foot jumper in the lane.  The Trolls would soon answer back and with 4:10 on the clock cut the Crimson Wave advantage to four points, 48-44.  Chabria Survillan answered back for the Crimson Wave and made the game 50-44.  With time running out the Trolls fouled out of desperation and after sinking three of four free throws the Crimson Wave came out victorious. 

Upshaw led the Crimson Wave with 16 points and 6 rebounds.  Feldpausch and Survillan threw in 100 and 11 points respectively. 

Today’s game marked the second annual WBCA Pink Zone game hosted by the Crimson Wave.  The WBCA Pink Zone was established to raise breast cancer awareness.  Two IPod shuffles, Asics running shoes, Adidas draw string bags with gift certificates were raffled off along with many different types of baked goods.   All proceeds from today’s event will be donated to the Kay Yow Foundation. 

The Crimson Wave (13-14, 4-3) will travel to Elgin, IL on Wednesday February 10 to take on the Eagles of Judson University at 5:30 pm.

Ladies Win in Final Seconds

2/3/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team defeated the Trinity International University Trojans in the final seconds of play tonight 75-73.

The game started with an early five point Trojan lead with 14:63 remaining in the first half.   The ladies kept the game close throughout the first half, stretching to the lead to seven on a Lydia Aceviz three pointer.  The Trojans did not the lead last long and by the end of the half pulled back within one 36-35.

The ladies lost the lead only once during the second half when at the 11:49 mark a Crimson Wave turnover turned into a Trojan lead.  The ladies took the lead back on their next possession with another Aceviz three.  The Crimson Wave carried a small led throughout the rest of the half. 

With 15 seconds remaining play the Trojans Lavina Price hit a jumpshot from the right side of the lane to tie the game at 73 apiece.   The Crimson Wave immediately got the ball down the court to Lisa Upshaw who missed a layup from the left side of the basket.  Upshaw grabbed her own rebound and banked it in with 2 seconds left to give the Crimson Wave a two point lead 75-73.  The Trojans inbounded the ball when Upshaw fouled Trinity’s Price.  Price missed her first shot of the bonus attempt and time ran out for the Trojans.

Upshaw led the ladies with 23 points, while Aceviz and Jackie Feldpausch each threw in 18 points for the ladies. 

The Crimson Wave (12-14, 3-3) will host Trinity Christian College on Saturday February 6th at 1:00 pm.  This game will be part of the WBCA Pink Zone to help raise breast cancer awareness.    

Men Crush Trojans in CCAC Game

2/3/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team crushed the Trinity International University Trojans tonight in a CCAC conference game 88-70.

The men got off to a slow start falling behind 13-2 in the first four minutes of play.  After two baskets by Wilfredo Escobar and a pair of free throws by Keith Dean the men put themselves back within five.   A good basket by Antonio Hurt cut the Trojan lead to three points with 11:53 left to play in the half.   From there the Crimson Wave started to build their lead outscoring the Trojans 35-19 in the final ten minutes of the first half.  The Crimson Wave went to the locker ahead 46-34 at the break.

After the break it was all Crimson Wave as the men went on a 18-6 run to start to the half and increased their lead to 24 with 11:02 left in play.  From there the men never looked back running away with the game 88-70.

The Crimson Wave were led by 23 points and 7 rebounds from Dean along with 18 points and 7 rebounds from Escobar. 
The Crimson Wave (10-15, 3-4) will host Trinity Christian College on Saturday February 6th at 3:00 pm. 

Ladies Return to Ave Maria

1/30/10 - Ave Maria, Fl. – The Crimson Wave softball team returned to Ave Maria University for a four game set .  The ladies were hoping to continue their winning ways sending senior Christy Atton (Worth, Ill./Trinity Christian College) to the mound for the second time in as many games.  Unfortunately the ladies were not able to capitalize on strong performances by freshman Lisa Moriarty (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) who went 2-2, freshman Jessica Miles (Hammond, In./Bishop Noll Institute) who went 1-3, scored one run and an RBI, and Atton helping her cause by hitting 1-3, scoring two runs and stealing two bases.  The final score of 13-5 does not indicate how well the ladies played.  Atton’s record moves to 1-1 on the year.

Game two started off well with junior Angela Naranjo-Peacock (Chico, Ca./Butte College) in the circle for the Crimson Wave.  Hitters freshman Lisa Moriarty (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and senior Christy Atton (Worth, Ill./Trinity Christian College) both had excellent days at the plate going 3-4 with one run and two stolen bases; and 4-5 with four runs and four stolen bases respectively.  Unfortunately, a strong CCSJ fifth inning was met with a stronger AMU side with the Gyrenes topping the Crimson Wave 14-11.  Naranjo-Peacock fell to 0-1 on the year in a performance that was stronger than the score shows.

Where most teams would have been spent, the Crimson Wave crashed the winning ways of the Gyrenes by a score of 12-1 in six innings.  Freshmen Betty Fuentes (El Paso, Tx./Socorro) evened her record to 1-1 while the crimson-hot bats of junior Angela Naranjo-Peacock (Chico, Ca./Butte College) and freshman Jessica Pabey (East Chicago, IN/East Chicago Central) went 3-4 with one run and two RBI and 3-5 with three runs, a steal and three RBI. 

Poised to even out the series at three games apiece, freshmen Betty Fuentes (El Paso, Tx./Socorro) continued her day in the circle; however, the Crimson Wave bats were silenced.  Juniors Janet Guill (Chico, Ca./Butte College) and Becky Liebermann (Channahon, Ill./South-Suburban College) went 1-3 with a run and 2-4 respectively in a 4-2 loss.  Fuentes moves to 1-2 on the year.

The Crimson Wave will be back in action on February 12-13 in Springfield, Mo. at the Evangel University Early Bird tournament.

Crimson Wave Split with Ave Maria

1/29/10  – Ave Maria, Fl. – The Crimson Wave softball team opened their season at Ave Maria University on Friday.  The ladies split losing the opening game 4-3 with freshman Jessica Pabey (East Chicago, IN/East Chicago Central) who went 2-4 with two stolen bases, freshman Shelby Boilek (Griffith, In./Griffith) who went 1-3 with two RBI and junior Angela Naranjo-Peacock (Chico, Ca./Butte College) who went 1-3 with an RBI.  Freshmen Betty Fuentes (El Paso, Tx./Socorro) was the losing pitcher (0-1).

The ladies turned things around winning the second game 8-1. Junior Ashley Berumen (Calumet City, Ill./T.F. North) went 2-2 with an RBI in her first action since the 2008 season. Freshman Jessica Miles (Hammond, In./Bishop Noll Institute) went 2-4, scored one run and an RBI, while junior Janet Guill (Chico, Ca./Butte College) went 2-3 with a run and an RBI.  Senior Christy Atton (Worth, Ill./Trinity Christian College) was the winning pitcher (1-0) striking out five Gyrenes.

Men’s Track Sets Five More Records

1/30/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s track and field team set five school records this weekend, competing at the Findlay Classic hosted by the University of Findlay.

Jordon Harris set records in the Pentathlon scoring 2005 points and in the Shot Put with 9.53m.   Richard Gutierrez set a new mark in the 5000m run finishing in 16:11.19 while Robbie Loop added his name to the record books in the 1000m run finishing in 2:48.37.  The 4X800m relay team of Fred Olaosebikan, Tyler Stiscak,  Joe Efantis, and Loop rounds out the records with a time of 8:24.33.

The men will compete at the Taylor University Invite this Saturday February 6th in Upland, IN. 

Crimson Wave Improve In Florida Season Opener

1/30/10 - The Crimson Wave baseball team lost a four game series against Ave Maria University in Ave Maria, FL this weekend.

On Friday the Crimson Wave got off to a slow start and suffered 11-1 losses in both games.  The bats were slow with a combined four hits for the day in their first two outdoor games of the season. 

On Saturday in game one, the Crimson Wave lost 6-0 and fell 6-5 in game two.  The bats improved with five hits in game one and 10 hits in game two.

Julian Griffith went 6-8 overall at the plate with a double, Ben Stepanian went 3-9 overall with a double and Kenny Segal went 4-8 overall with a two-run home run in game four.  Jeremy Jeffries added a double.  Ryan Senko stole three bases while John Chance stole third base.  All pitchers were limited to a 65-pitch count.

The Crimson Wave (0-4 overall) will travel to Lambuth University in Jackson, TN, February 20-21 for another four game series.

Ladies Crush the Archers

1/30/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team crushed the Moody Bible Institute Archers today 69-41.

The ladies jumped out to a 10 first half lead, 28-18.  The second half found the Crimson Wave in control pushing the lead to 18 with 8 minutes left in play.  The ladies dominated the rest of the half reaching their biggest lead of the night at 28. 
  
The Crimson Wave (11-14) were led by Lisa Upshaw’s 10 points and five rebounds.    Lydia Aceviz added 9 along with Moneva Fields and Tisa Carter adding 8 points apiece.  The ladies shot 88.9% from the free throw line going 8-9.
    
The Crimson Wave will host Trinity International University on February 3rd at 5:30 pm in CCAC conference match up. 

Men Beat Peregrines in Cross Town Rival  
         
1/27/10 - The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team came up big in the final minutes of play against cross town rival and CCAC opponent Purdue University Calumet, 78-75.

The Crimson Wave men got off to a slow start and found themselves trailing by two at the 10:00 minute mark.  This would be the last Peregrine lead of the night and the Crimson Wave took over.  Brannon Jones and Keith Dean would hit back to back lay ups for a four point lead.  At the 6:18 mark the Crimson Wave would start a 12-0 run starting with two Dean free throws, points by CJ Montgomery and Wilfredo Escobar and a three point bucket by Jon Contos.  The Crimson Wave would go to the locker room at half time with an 8 point lead 42-34. 

Sixteen seconds into the second half the men picked up where they left off with Contos burying a three from the wing off a pass from Robert Pogue.  The Crimson Wave would lead by double digits most of the second half until a small Peregrine run left the men ahead by only two, 76-74.

At the 2:50 mark the game seem to go cold in its entirety.  Both teams missed shot after shot and series of turnovers seemed to mark a change in play.  With forty five seconds remaining in play the Peregrines Eric Summers split a set of free throws to make it a one point Crimson Wave advantage.   Pogue grabbed the board for the Crimson Wave.  With fourteen seconds left Antonio Hurt would get an unlucky break on the rim and his layup popped out.  The Peregrines came up with the rebounded and headed down floor to take the lead.  The Peregrines Kedric Williams would turn the ball over and Purdue Calumet was forced to foul.  The desperation foul sent Escobar to the line for a pair.  Escobar sunk both for a three point Crimson Wave advantage 78-75.  The men stayed strong on the defensive end claiming the victory.

The Crimson Wave were led by Escobar who poured in 24 points shooting 50% from the arc, 4-8.  Dean and Hurt added 16 and 12 points in the victory.

The men will take the weekend off, hosting Trinity International University Wednesday February 3rd at 7:30 pm. 

Women Come Up Short at PUC

1/27/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team came up short tonight against cross town rival and CCAC opponent the Purdue University Calumet Peregrines, 89-75.

The ladies came out strong leading the first eight minutes of play despite losing Jackie Feldpausch to two early fouls 2:29 seconds into play.  The Crimson Wave could not hold off the Peregrines late in the half as the Purdue Calumet caught a streak of hot shooting.  The ladies trailed by 19 at the half 48-29.

The second half brought Feldpausch back into play; grabbing the Crimson Wave’s first two rebounds and four points of the half.   Feldpausch seemed to be unstoppable scoring seven more points over the next four minutes of play.   However the hot shooting of the Peregrines never ended, shooting 63.6% from the arc in the second half.

 Feldpausch poured in 19 second half points giving her 21 total on the night.   Lisa Upshaw and Lydia Aceviz scored 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Crimson Wave (10-14) will host Moody Bible Institute on Saturday January 30th at 1:00 pm.    

Men Take 2nd Overall

1/26/10 - The Crimson Wave men’s bowling team traveled to South Bend, IN this past weekend to participate in the Blue and Gold Classic hosted by the University of Notre Dame’s bowling club.  The men continued in their success from the previous weekend (Bearcat Open champions) by taking 2nd place overall.  
 The men totaled 9,426 pins.  Seniors Ryan Alberson and Ryan Gleghorn along with junior Sammy Krucek were name to the all-tournament team.   

The men will travel to Fairview Heights, IL to compete in the McKendree Baker Challenge on February 6-7. 

Wrestling Crushes Hannibal-LaGrange

1/26/10 – The Crimson Wave wrestling team crushed Hannibal-LaGrange College tonight 34-3.   Chad Allen and Derek Allen each won their match with a pin. Santiago Botello got his first win of his young collegiate career, 7-3.  Nick Fouts improved his record with a 12-3 win and Dustin Boyd took a 12-8 in his match. 

The Crimson Wave wrestling program will compete at the NAIA regional qualifier in February. 

Men Lose to Panthers in Conference Matchup

1/23/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team came up short today against the Purdue University North Central Panthers 79-76. 

The men got off to a slow start today trailing by as many as eight in the first half.  Wilfredo Escobar poured in 15 points in the first half going four for four at the free throw line.  The men trailed by only four at the half, 33-29.

The second half brought a deficit of 17 points for the men at the 8:11 mark.  The Crimson Wave would not let the Panther lead last.  Over the next four minutes of play the men would go on a 14-0 run.  During the run the men came up with three unanswered steals.  Jon Contos hit two three pointers, while Antonio Hurt threw in four of the points and Robert Pogue and Keith Dean each added a pair.  The Panthers would real off the next five points to increase their lead to nine, 75-66, with 36 seconds left in play.   Dean hit a three with 20 seconds left to make it a six point game.  After two made Panther free throws, Hurt floated a three in with 7 seconds on the clock to make it a 5 point Panther lead.   The Panthers Ryan Sisson missed two free throws to give the Crimson Wave the ball.  Dean would hit the next three pointer to make it a two point deficit. 

The men would foul the Panthers Derrick Hazelwood to try and gain possession.  Hazelwood hit both free throws for a 4 point Panther advantage.  With two tenths of a second left Sisson fouled the Crimson Wave’s Devon Key on his last second three point attempt, and sent Key to the line for three free throws.  Key hit one of three free throws and the Crimson Wave ran out of time. 

Escobar led the men with 19 points while Contos added 17 points for the Crimson Wave.  Pogue and Dean added 13 and 11 points respectively. 

The Crimson Wave (8-15, 1-3) will travel across town to Purdue University Calumet Wednesday January 27th for a 7:00 pm CCAC showdown. 

Ladies Suffer Loss to No. 19 Wolves

1/20/09 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team took their second conference loss of the season tonight, 65-51, to the NAIA No. 19 Cardinal Stritch University Wolves.

The Crimson Wave women came out strong jumping to an early five point lead, 7-2, at the 16:22 mark.  The ladies did not hold the lead long as the Wolves went on a 13-4 run to take a 15-11 lead at 13:12.  The ladies caught a shooting slump and ended the first half trailing 39-21.

Throughout the second half the ladies fought hard to get themselves back in the game but came up short giving the game to the Wolves 65-51. 

Lisa Upshaw led the ladies with 17 points and 6 rebounds.  Lydia Aceviz also threw in 11 points for the Crimson Wave. 

The Crimson Wave (10-13, 2-2) will play cross town rival and CCAC opponent Purdue University Calumet on January 27th at 5:00 pm.  The game will be played at Purdue Calumet. 

Men Lose to No. 12 Wolves at Home

1/20/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team was defeated tonight by NAIA No. 12 Cardinal Stritch University Wolves, 89-57.

The Crimson were led by Robert Pogue’s 22 points. 

The Crimson Wave (8-14, 1-3) will host conference opponent Purdue University North Central on Saturday January 23rd at 3:00 pm.

Sandoval and Miroski Named All-Scholar

1/19/09 – Crimson Wave men’s soccer player Boge Miroski and Jose Sandoval have named to that NSCAA Scholar All-Region Team.  This is the second year in a row each of these student athletes have received this award.

The NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) is the governing coaching association for soccer in the United States.

Crimson Wave Roll to a third place finish at the Hoinke

 1/16/09 - Cincinnati, OH - The Crimson Wave Women's Bowling Team competed in the 10th annual Hoinke Classic this past weekend and returned home with a third place finish in a field of 27 teams. The field bowled on two different PBA patterns over the two day event. (Shark-Saturday, Viper-Sunday)  The ladies qualified in 5th position for the nine game qualifying rounds with a pin total of 7934 plus 420 bonus pins. The field was cut to the top six teams after qualifying with bracket play determining the overall winner.  

In the first round, the Crimson Wave defeated the Wright State Raiders 3 games to 1 in the best of five baker format. The second round brought a much more formidable opponent in top seed and national powerhouse Pikeville College. The ladies saved their best for last, but it was not enough to overcome the experience of Pikeville, falling 3 games to 1 to the Lady Bears. 

“This was a complete team effort by the ladies. When one or two individuals found the lane pattern difficult, the other team members were there to keep the team steady. I was also impressed by first year team members Fallon Jarboe and Jessica Zaideman who did well this weekend in their first collegiate competition. Both young ladies played a significant role in our first round win over Wright State. I hope we can continue this momentum into next week's Tier 1 event in South Bend, IN.”  Said Coach Shon Washington

Men Win at Hoinke, Second Year in a Row

1/16/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s bowling team traveled to Cincinnati, OH to compete in the Hoinke Bearcat Open this weekend.  The Crimson Wave men finished 1st overall for the second straight year. 

The Crimson Wave opened up the tournament in the first round finishing in last place.  Over the next group of matches the Crimson Wave found themselves chipping away and eventually in first at the end of day one.  

Day two brought match play.  The Crimson Wave received a bye in the first round of match play.  In round two the men took on Saginaw Valley State’s C team and won by a convincing total.   The men would defeat Lindenwood University in round three to send them to the finals.

In the finals match the Crimson Wave saw themselves up against a tough young Pikeville University squad.  In first game of the finals the teams tied earning one point a piece, needing three to win the match.  Over the next four games each team won two games apiece.  This sent the match to an extra game. 

The Crimson Wave men chose the left lane for the final.  After starting with a set of spares the men struck the next eight giving them a 246 pin total and championship win. 

Ryan Gleghorn finished 9th overall individually averaging 209, while Derrek Bohn finished 11th with a 208 average.  Ryan Alberson was named to the All-Match Play Team after winning eight out of nine games. 

The Crimson Wave will compete in their next event on January 23-24th in South Bend, IN at the Blue and Gold Classic.  The Blue and Gold Classic is a tier one event, the men finished 2nd at the event last season. 

Grubba Qualifies at Elmhurst

1/16/09 - The Crimson Wave wrestling team traveled to Elmhurst College to participate in the Al Hanke Invite today.  

The day was highlighted by heavyweight Artie Grubba who placed 6th and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in March.  The team finished 10th overall in the event.

The Crimson Wave wrestling team will hit the mat again next Saturday January 23rd at the Wabash duals at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN.

Men Compete at GVSU Invite
  
1/15/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s track and field team traveled to the Grand Valley State University Invitation this weekend.

Randy Hinton finished third overall in the 200m and 400m runs.  Hinton ran a 22.61 in the 200m and 50.50 in the 400m run.  Both of Hinton’s finishes have set new school records in the events.   Robbie Loop set a school record in the one mile run at 4:35.63 finishing 25th overall.   Jordon Harris’s throw of 8.86m in the shot put will put his name in the school record books along with a new record in the 4X400m relay.  The relay team of Joe Efantis, Nate Haverstock, Tom Moore, Randy Hinton finished in a time of 3:26.40, taking 3rd overall in the event.

The men will travel to the Findlay Classic on January 29th and 30th for their next event. 

Men Lose Despite Three in Double Digits  
         
1/16/10 – The Crimson Wave found themselves with three players in double digits scoring tonight despite a tough loss to the Judson University Eagles.

The men came out of the gates strong grabbing an ten point lead seven minutes into play after a Robert Pogue steal converted into two points for the Crimson Wave.  The Crimson Wave stayed hot the rest of the half shooting 63.3% from the field.  The men ended the half with a six point lead 54-48. 

The second half started with a Keith Dean pass to Wilfredo Escobar for a three pointer from the wing extending the Crimson Wave lead to nine.  The men fought hard to keep the lead by finally let the Eagles back into the game and found themselves trailing by six, 71-65 at the 11:31 mark. 

With 10:15 remaining Jon Contos hit a three point basket from the left wing to tie the game at 73.  The Crimson Wave would head to the defensive end of the floor where Dean stole a pass from the Eagles Jim Kuban and took it the length of the floor for a two point Crimson Wave lead.  This would be the last Crimson Wave lead of the night as a streak of missed shots would set in and the Eagles grabbed an 11 point lead.  The men fought hard to get themselves back in the game but could not get back their offensive rhythm and fell to the Eagles 98-82.

The men were led by Dean’s 23 points along with 20 points from Escobar and 16 from Pogue.

The Crimson Wave (8-13, 1-2) will host Cardinal Stritch University January 20th at 7:30 pm.  
 

Ladies Come Up Short Against the Eagles

1/16/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team fell short in the final minutes of play against CCAC opponent the Judson University Eagles tonight.

The ladies got off to a slow start trailing by ten in the first six minutes of play.  The ladies fought back over the next three minutes tying the game at 14’s on a Moneva Fields jumper.  After a series of back and forth scoring throughout the rest of the half, the Crimson Wave went to the locker room trailing by two, 27-25 at the half. 

The second half started with another slow start by the Crimson Wave trailing by seven early on.  After back to back jumpers by Lisa Upshaw the Crimson Wave cut the Eagles lead to two at the 16:47 mark.  The ladies found themselves down just a point with eleven minutes left in play when Upshaw converted a three point play that made the score 47-46.

This would be the closes the ladies would get the rest of half and the Crimson Wave fell to the eagles 59-56. 

Upshaw led the Crimson Wave with 26 points while teammate Jackie Feldpausch threw in 15 points and grabbed 8 boards.
The Crimson Wave (10-12, 2-1) will host Cardinal Stritch University January 20th at 5:30 pm. 

Men Escape with Win Over Trolls   
        
1/13/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team escaped with a win over the Trinity Christian College Trolls tonight 73-69 in the final minute of play.

The Crimson Wave men came out focused on defense to compliment their 81.6 ppg average.  The men came strong grabbing and early ten point lead in the first four minutes of play.  The Trolls would not trail for long tying the game at 16 a piece with 10:03 on the clock.  After a steal and three point bucket by Wilfredo Escobar the men found themselves with a three point lead.  This would be the last Crimson Wave lead of the half as the Trolls took a one point half time lead 35-34.

The Crimson Wave came out in the second half shooting and jumped to a 6 point lead with 15:09 left in play.  After a series of lead changes and made jumpers the game found itself with a one point Crimson Wave lead when CJ Montgomery tucked in a layup on the right side of the lane.  The Crimson Wave would go to the defensive end and send the Trolls Will Bruinsma to the line for two made free throws to send the game into a one point Troll lead.  

With 18 seconds remaining in the contest Escobar fouled Trinity’s Michael Thompson.  Thompson missed the first of his bonus opportunity and Keith Dean grabbed the rebound driving the length of the floor.  Dean would make it to the baseline when the Trolls defense collapsed on him and he shot the pass out to a wide open Escobar who sunk the three pointer from the top of the key.    The Trolls immediately called a time out.  Josh Flikkema would inbound the ball for the Trolls passing it right into the hands of Escobar who was immediately fouled.   Escobar sunk both giving the Crimson Wave a 73-69 victory over the Trolls.

The Crimson Wave were led by Dean’s 34 points along with 17 from Escobar.  Dean was also perfect from the charity stripe going 10-10. 

The Crimson Wave (8-12, 1-1) will host conference rivalry Judson University Saturday January 16 at 3:00 pm.      

Ladies 2-0, After Win Over Trolls     
        
1/13/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team start the conference season 2-0 for the first time in program history with a 54-50 win over the Trinity Christian Trolls tonight 54-50.

The first bucket of the night came two and half minutes into play when Jack Feldpausch scored on a layup after a steal by Lydia Aceviz.  Over the next ten minutes of play each team would only score another ten points and the Trolls would find themselves in with a 2 point lead 12-10.  Over the last minutes of play each team would miss a series of baskets to produce a low half time score of 21-16 in favor of Trinity.

The second half was unlike the first and both teams came out in an offensive mindset.  The Crimson Wave would take their first lead of the half with 6:40 left in play on an Ashley Kieltyka three point basket assisted by Feldpausch.  The Crimson Wave would hold the lead for much of the next four minutes of play until a pair of free throws by the Tolls Emily Stursma tied the contest at 48 apiece. 

With 2:08 remaining Lisa Upshaw grabbed a missed jump shot by the trolls and went the length of the floor for the layup and a two point lead.   With consecutive turnovers by the trolls the Upshaw would again find herself scoring and a Crimson Wave four point advantage.  The Trolls would cut the lead to two when Christine Iwema hit a baseline jump shot.  With two seconds on the clock Tisa Carter stole an Iwema pass and was fouled out of desperation.  Carter hit both shots from the line to seal a Crimson Wave win 54-50.
 
Upshaw led the Crimson Wave with 13 points while Feldpausch threw in 8 and grabbed 9 boards in the win.

The Crimson Wave (10-11, 2-0) will host conference rivalry Judson University Saturday January 16 at 1:00 pm. 

Men Fight Hard Against Greyhounds

1/13/09 – The Crimson Wave traveled south to the University of Indianapolis tonight for a dual with the Greyhounds.  The Crimson Wave came up short being defeated 33-12.

Senior Dan Bedoy pinned the Greyhounds J.T. Jenkins in 1:22.  Dustin Boyd and Chad Allen each won their dual respectively.

The Crimson Wave will travel to Elmhurst College this Saturday January 16 for a dual with the Blue Jays.

Ladies Grab First Conference Victory

1/9/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team has won their first regular season conference game since the 2006-2007 season when they defeated the Trinity International University Trojans tonight 73-59 in Deerfield, IL.
 
The Crimson Wave took a two point lead 44 seconds into the game on a Jackie Feldpausch jump shot .  This would start a 20-5 Crimson Wave run that would end on a Lisa Upshaw jump shot from the right wing.  The Crimson Wave pushed through the first half shooting 55.6% from the field and going to the locker room with an 18 first half lead.

The second half was no better for Trojans as the Crimson Wave came out and hit their first jumper of the half.  With 7 minutes left in play the Crimson Wave hit a small rough patch and the Trojans cut the lead to nine.  That would not last long as the ladies would string together a set of jumpers to push the lead pack into double digits.   The Crimson Wave never lost the lead throughout the entire game, shooting 52.8% from the field and 36.4% from the arc. 

Feldpausch led the Crimson Wave with 27 points and six rebounds.   Teammates Tisa Carter and Chabria Survillan scored 11 and 10 points respectively.  Moneva Fields grabbed 10 rebounds in the Crimson Wave victory.

The ladies (9-11 overall, 1-0 CCAC) will travel to Trinity Christian College on Wednesday January 13, for a 5:30 pm conference match up with the Trolls.  The game will be broadcast live on the Crimson Wave Radio Network. 

Men Lose to Trojans Despite Halftime Lead

1/9/10 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team took their first conference loss of the season tonight against the Trinity International University Trojans despite an eight point halftime lead.   

The Crimson Wave to off to a slow start grabbing their first lead of the night a the 8:12 mark in the first half on an Antonio Hurt jump shot.  With 3:47 left in the half Jon Contos hit a three pointer from the wing off a Kyle Mueller pass to start an 11-0 Crimson Wave run; that would end with a Wilfredo Escobar pull up jumper from the lane and give the Crimson Wave a 43-35 lead at the half.
 
The second half was not as bright for the men.  After hitting the first two baskets of the second half the Crimson Wave would go on a dry spell scoring only two points over the next six minutes of play.  During those six minutes the Trojans grabbed a 10 point advantage over the men.  The Crimson Wave never got back in the game and took their first conference loss 99-76.

Hurt led the men with 23 points while Escobar added 10. 

The Crimson Wave (7-12 overall, 0-1 CCAC) will travel to Trinity Christian College on Wednesday January 13, for a 7:30 pm conference match up. The game will be broadcast live on the Crimson Wave Radio Network.    

Ladies Struggle Against Eagles

1/05/09 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team struggled tonight in a 83-62 loss to the Robert Morris University Eagles. 

The Crimson Wave came out slow tonight going to the locker room at the half down 51-31.  The Crimson Wave came out in the second half and chipped away slowly going on a 7-2 run capped by a Whitney Bonham jump shot.  The Crimson Wave’s shooting was ultimately the deciding factor in giving the game to the Eagles.

The Crimson Wave were led by 12 points a piece by Ashley Kieltyka and Jackie Feldpausch.

The Crimson Wave will travel to Trinity International University on Saturday January 9th for their first conference game of the season.  The game will kick off in Deerfield, IL at 5:30 pm. 

Upshaw Named CCAC Player of the Week

1/5/09 - The Crimson Wave women's basketball team had a big week last week defeating two nationally recognized teams in the St. Xavier University Holiday Invite. A big reason for the Crimson Wave success was the performances of junior guard Lisa Upshaw (East Chicago, IN). She led the team in scoring and rebounding in both games and was named to the All-Tournament team. She earns CCAC Women's Basketball Division II Player of the Week for the week ending January 3.

With 38 seconds left against Siena Heights University, a team receiving votes in the NAIA national poll, Upshaw grabbed a rebound after a missed Saints shot and was immediately fouled. Upshaw sank both free throws to secure a 79-75 win. Upshaw led the Crimson Wave with 28 points and seven rebounds. She also had three assists. She shot 11-of-17 from the field, including two three-pointers. She made all four of her free throws.

The win against No. 17 ranked Siena Heights was another game that went down to the wire with Upshaw on the free throw line. With 5.7 seconds remaining in the game Upshaw was fouled and sent to the line with the Crimson Wave down 72-71. Upshaw buried both to give the Crimson Wave the one point advantage. A Saints turnover ended the game and Calumet earned the 73-72 win. Upshaw once again led the Crimson Wave, this time with 24 points and 13 rebounds. She also contributed four assists and one steal. She made 8-of-14 shots, including five three-pointers.

In the two games combined, Upshaw averaged 26 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. She shot 61 percent from the field (19-31), 54.3 percent from behind the arc (7-13) and 88 percent from the free throw line (7-8).

Upshaw ranks fourth in the league with a 13.2 points per game average. Calumet is 8-10 on the year so far.

Bedoy Takes Win at Midwest Classic

1/3/09 – Crimson Wave senior wrestler Dan Bedoy won the 174 lb weight class at the Midwest Classic this weekend, defeating Justin Shannon from Findlay University. 

Bedoy started his journey with a bye in the first round.  The second round he matched up with University of Indianapolis wrestler Shelby Mappes.  After defeating mappes Bedoy ran the table against Limestone University, Grand Canyon University to meet Shannon in the finals. 

 The Crimson Wave wrestling team will compete at the Manchester Dual Meet on January 8th at Manchester College. 

Upshaw, Crimson Wave Knock Off Siena Heights

12/29/09 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team revenged their one point loss against the Siena Heights University Saints, 73-72, today to take 5th place in the St. Xavier Holiday Invite. 

With 5.7 seconds remaining in the game Lisa Upshaw is fouled and sent to the line with the Crimson Wave down one point 72-71.  Upshaw stayed focus and buried both to give the Crimson Wave the one point advantage.  After a Saints turnover, the game was sealed for the ladies.   

The Saints led most of the first half.  With 1:14 left in the half Moneva Fields hit a layup and was fouled.  Fields buried her free throw to give the ladies a one point lead.  The Crimson Wave would score three more times before the break and end the half with a three point lead 35-32.

The Crimson Wave came out in the second half and picked up right where they left off.  With 16:28 left in the second half Lisa Upshaw converted an offensive rebound to two points and gave the ladies a 9 point lead.  The Crimson Wave would hold their lead until the 1:28 mark when the Saints Shalaha Hubbard hit a three point basket from the wing to give the Saints their first lead of the half.  After two Saints free throws, Upshaw would bury her third three of the night to bring the Crimson Wave with one.  The Saints would then miss a three pointer from the wing and Upshaw grabbed the biggest rebound of the night. 

With 5.7 seconds remaining Upshaw is fouled and sent to the line with the Crimson Wave down one point 72-71.  Upshaw stayed focus and buried both to give the Crimson Wave the one point advantage.  After a Saints turnover, the game was sealed for the ladies. 
 
Upshaw led the Crimson Wave with 24 points and 13 rebounds, being named to the St. Xavier Holiday Invite All-Tournament team for her three day performance.  Jackie Feldpausch added 15 points and Fields and Joselyn Gray added 10 apiece.

The Crimson Wave are now 8-10 overall. 

Women Upset No. 17 Aquinas

12/28/09 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team upset No. 17 the Aquinas College Saints tonight 79-75 in the second round of the St. Xavier Holiday Invite.

After leading most of the first half the Crimson Wave went to the locker room down 4 points, 38-34, at half time. 

The Saints lead would not last for long and ladies went on a 29-15 run to take a commanding 15 point lead that would end on a Jackie Feldpausch layup.  The Crimson Wave could not hold the extended lead long and with 1:16 left, found themselves with a four point lead.  With 38 seconds left the Saints would miss a short jumper; Lisa Upshaw grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled.  Upshaw sank both free throws to ensure the win. 

Upshaw led the Crimson Wave with 28 points and 7 rebounds.  Feldpausch and Whitney Bonham added 12 and 11 points respectively.

The Crimson Wave will play for the consolation championship tomorrow December 29th at 3:00 pm against Siena Heights University. 

Women Lose in First Round  
     
12/27/09 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team lost to the University of St. Francis (IN) today in the first round of the St. Xavier Holiday Invite 81-77.

The Crimson Wave were led by Lisa Upshaw’s double double of 24 points and 10 rebounds.  Moneva Fields added 10 points and 7 rebounds for the ladies. 

The Crimson Wave (6-10) will take on Aquinas College at 2:00 pm tomorrow Monday, December 28th in the second round of the St. Xavier Holiday Invite. 

Men Win at IUN

12/22/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team won a thriller tonight at Indiana University Northwest 78-77. 

The Crimson Wave led by one at the half 34-33.  The second half the Crimson Wave came out and jumped on a early 6 point lead.  The lead would not last for long and the game bounced between each team having a one point lead for much of the half.  With 11.8 seconds remaing Wilfredo Escobar sank a pair of free throws to give the Crimson Wave a three point lead 78-75.  After a foul and two IUN foul shots the Crimson Wave in bounded the ball and held on for the win.

The men were led by 17 points a piece by Keith Dean and Wilfredo Escobar. 

The Crimson Wave (7-11) will take a couple weeks off before traveling to Trinity International University on Saturday January 9th for a 7:30 pm game to open the conference season. 

Escobar Joins 1,000 Point Club

12/20/09 – Whiting, IN – Crimson Wave men’s basketball junior guard Wilfredo Escobar secured his place in Crimson Wave basketball history when he reached the 1,000 point plateau.  Escobar is just the fourth Crimson Wave men’s basketball player to reach this mark. 

With just 11 seconds left in the game against Waldorf College in the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite, Escobar put away a pair of free throws to give him his 1,000th and 1, 1001 point of his career.   He finished the night with 23 points and three assists. As the Crimson Wave defeated Waldorf 72-65.

Escobar has been named to the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference all-conference team each of his three years playing for the Crimson Wave.   Escobar was also named CCAC Freshman of the year in 2007-2008. 

Escobar has also become the Crimson Wave men’s basketball all-time assist leader with 236 assists. 

Men Go Down to the Wire with Carthage

12/19/09 – The Crimson Wave (6-11) men’s basketball went down to the wire tonight against the Carthage College Red Men, currently ranked 23rd by d3hoops.com poll, just falling short 90-88.

The Crimson Wave spent the entire first half with lead except on three occasions when the Red Men tied the game.  The men went into the break with a three point lead 43-40.  The Crimson Wave’s first half control was lead by Keith Dean and Antonio Hurt who scored 15 and 14 points in the half.  The men got the job done early at the charity stripe hitting 10-11.

The second half the Crimson Wave retied the game on their second possession of the half on a Dean layup after a pair of jumpers gave the Red Men their first lead of the night.  With 5:20 remaining in the half the Crimson Wave found themselves with a two point lead, 75-73, and the ball.  After a set of missed jumpers the Red Men regained the lead.  At the 3:43 mark the men took a 78-77 lead.  Dean would score the men’s next seven points each being answered by the Red Men.  With 7.6 left on the clock the men were down 88-85 when Hurt hit a three point shot from the top of the key to tie the game.    With less than three seconds on the clock the Red Men found Max Carey behind the Crimson Wave defense for the game winning layup. 

The Crimson Wave shot 44.9 percent from the field and 89.5 percent from the free throw line.  Dean ended the night with 34 points going 12-19 from the field and 4-6 from behind the arc.  Hurt threw in 24 and grabbed 9 rebounds for the men. 

The Crimson Wave will travel across the region on Tuesday night to take on Indiana University Northwest in a 7:00 pm game.     

Crimson Wave Holiday Classic Day Two

12/19/09 – The Crimson Wave ended day two of the Crimson Wave Holiday Classic with their second straight loss.  The ladies were defeated by the Marian University Knights 60-45.

The Crimson Wave came out slow and fell behind by 16 after shooting a season low 20 percent in the first half.  The ladies came out in the second looking to get back on track.  After chipping away for most of the half the Crimson Wave found themselves down four with 4:38 remaining after Tisa Carter three point bucket.  The Crimson Wave could not hold on gave the game to the Knights. 

Lydia Aceviz led the ladies with 11 points.  Aceviz and Moneva Fields were named to the all-classic team.  The Crimson Wave are now 6-9 overall. 

In the first game of the day Iowa Wesleyan College defeated Walsh University 76-55. 

Crimson Wave Holiday Classic Day One

12/18/09 – The Crimson Wave were defeated by Walsh University today in the second game of the Crimson Wave Holiday Classic 69-46.

In game one Iowa Wesleyan College cruised past Marian University 77-57.

Game two found the Crimson Wave down early on and by 13 at the half 38-25.   After a slow start to the second half the Crimson Wave found themselves down and gave the game to Walsh 69-46.

Lydia Aceviz, Moneva Fields, Jackie Feldpausch and Chabria Survillan each scored 7 points for the Crimson Wave.

The Crimson Wave (6-7) will take on Marian University at 2:00 pm tomorrow in day two of the Crimson Wave Classic.  

Crimson Wave Sign Crown Point State Champ

12/15/09 – Head wrestling Coach Leroy Vega added another state champion to his roster this afternoon signing Crown Point High School senior Anthony Hawkins for the 2009-2010 season.  Hawkins won the 2009 Indiana State Championship at 112 pounds.

Hawkins in currently ranked fourth in the country by Wrestling USA magazine at 112 lbs.  Hawkins and Coach Vega go back a long way.   Hawkins dad was Vegas high school assistant coach when we wrestled at Portage High School in the 90’s.  Anthony eventually found himself a part of Vega Wrestling, the wrestling club that Coach Vega owned. 

Hawkins will come to Calumet College of St. Joseph undecided on his major but sure about one thing “I made the right choice staying in the region wrestling for Coach Vega.  I made the right choice for my wrestling career.” Said Hawkins

“There is a lot of weight off his shoulders now; he can concentrate on winning his second state title.  Anthony is a great kid and will be a great wrestler for us.  Having a kid like that in the room with us will make us better, him better, the team better, and everyone better individually.  He will bring so much to our program.  We are one step closer to getting to a national title.”  Said Coach Vega on Anthony Hawkins. 

Feldpausch Named POW for Second Time

12/15/09 - Crimson Wave junior Jackie Feldpausch (Grandledge, MI) has earned her second CCAC Women's Basketball Division II Player of the Week award after leading her team to two wins last week. For the week ending Dec. 13, Feldpausch averaged 12.7 points and six rebounds per game and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite.

The Crimson Wave started the week with a near-win against Siena Heights University. The squad lost by one, 64-63. Feldpausch had six points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

In a 71-44 blowout win against Marygrove College, Feldpausch was only needed for 12 minutes of play but she made the most of it. The 5-10 center had eight points, eight rebounds, three steals and one assist.

In an 80-73 win against Ashford University in the championship game of the invite, Feldpausch led her team with 24 points, to go along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

In addition to her 12.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game average, Feldpausch shot 48.5 percent from the field (16-33) and averaged 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in the three games combined. She ranks 10th in the league with an 11.3 points per game average.

The Crimson Wave evened its record at 6-6 overall with last week's two wins.

Ladies Take Tough Loss to the Maple Leafs  
       
12/15/09 - Three days after winning the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite the Crimson Wave women’s basketball team took a tough loss to the Goshen College Maples Leafs at home 77-61.

The Crimson Wave started slow but got themselves back in the game late early in the second half on a Jackie Feldpausch jumper to cut the Goshen lead to six.  The Crimson Wave could not hold on and soon found themselves down with time running out.  After a tough battle the Crimson Wave gave the game to the Maple Leafs. 

The Crimson Wave were led by Lisa Upshaw’s 11 points and six rebounds.  Lydia Aceviz, Chabria Survillan, and Jasmine Richards each had 7 points for the ladies.

The Crimson Wave (6-7) will host the Crimson Wave Classic this weekend, where they will face Walsh University on Friday night at 7:30 in the opening round. 

Crimson Wave Wins Championship Game

12/12/09 - The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team beat Ashford University today in the championship game of the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite to claim the championship.

The Crimson Wave fell behind early and found themselves down 14 points in the first ten minutes of play.  The Crimson Wave chipped away and went on a 10 point unanswered run to end the first half, going to the locker room down four, 33-29.

The second half started with a Lydia Aceviz three pointer followed by a Moneva Fields jumper a minute later to take a one point lead.  After a back and fourth game over the next five minutes of play the Crimson Wave started to pull away on a 13-4 run capped with another Aceviz three.    The Crimson Wave never looked back and beat Ashford 80-73 to take the championship. 

Jackie Feldpausch led the Crimson Wave with 24 points and 6 rebounds.  Fields and Joselyn Gray each had 17 points for the ladies along with 6 and 7 rebounds respectively.
 
Jackie Feldpausch was named Most Outstanding Player of the invite and teammate Moneva Fields was named to the all-invite team.   The Crimson Wave ladies are now 6-6 overall. 

Men Sink Kuyper

12/12/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team sunk Kuyper College today, 90-68 in day two of the Bethel College Invite.

The game was all Crimson Wave from the tip off and the men had a 28 point lead 53-25 at the half.  Wilfredo Escobar had 20 points while Jon Contos threw in 19 and 9 rebounds including five three pointers.  The Crimson Wave shot 84 percent from the free throw line in the win.

Crimson Wave Holiday Invite Day One

12/11/09 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team will head to the championship game of the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite tomorrow against Ashford University.

Game one saw a ten point win, 64-54, by Ashford University over Mid-Continent University today in the opening round.

In game two the Crimson Wave got back on track in their twenty seven point, 71-44, win over Marygrove College.  The Crimson Wave came out strong and took a ten point first half lead on a Moneva Fields jump shot.    The Crimson Wave kept pushing forward and went the locker room with a fifteen point lead 32-17 at the half. 

The Crimson Wave came out in the second half just as the first ended.  The Crimson Wave pushed the game to a twenty seven point lead for the win.

Lydia Aceviz led the Crimson Wave with 10 points and five rebounds. 

The Crimson Wave will play Ashford University in the championship game starting at 2:00 pm.  The consolation game will start at 12:00 pm and will match up Mid-Continent University and Marygrove College.  The invite is being held on the campus of CCSJ. 

Four Named Scholar Athletes

12/10/09 – Four Crimson Wave athletes have been named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes.   Junior men’s soccer player Jose Sandoval and three volleyball players, Senior Kate Delaney, Senior Juliet Bustos, and Junior Terra Totos.

Nominated by each institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify.

Good Shooting Not Enough
       
12/8/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team shot 43.2 percent from the field, but it was not enough to hold off CCAC Division One opponent Robert Morris University.

The Crimson Wave came out strong against the Eagles and took their first and only lead of the night with nine minutes remaining in the first half on a CJ Montgomery layup.  The Crimson Wave could not hold off the Eagles charge and went to the locker room down 13 at the half 52-39. 

The second half brought a strong surge by the Crimson Wave who cut the deficit to four with 8 minutes left in play.  Despite shooting 88.9 percent from the free throw line in the second half the Crimson Wave could not hold on and the Eagles took the game 101-92.
Keith Dean led the Crimson Wave with 30 points while Robert Pogue and Wilfredo Escobar added 24 and 18 points respectively. 

The Crimson Wave (5-9) will compete at the Bethel College Invite this weekend. 

Ladies Clipped by One at Home

12/08/09 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team lost in the final seconds tonight against the Siena Heights University Saints 64-63.

The Crimson Wave came out strong tonight and took an early 8 point lead, 13-5 in the first six minutes of play.  The lead would not last long and with a string of Saints jump shots the game was tied at 14 a piece with 12 minutes left in the first half.  The Crimson Wave retook the lead and headed to the locker room on a three pointer by Lisa Upshaw to make the score 34-29 Crimson Wave.

The second half was all Crimson Wave leading by as many as seven.  The Saints took their first lead of the half when they drove the length of the floor with three seconds left and put in a layup down the right side of the lane. 

Upshaw led the Crimson Wave with 21 points while Joselyn Gray had 13. 

The Crimson Wave are now 4-6 overall.  The ladies will host their Crimson Wave Holiday Invite this Friday and Saturday December 11-12 at home.  The Crimson Wave will play the second game at 7:30 pm against Marygrove College. 

Ladies Host Siena Heights

12/8/09 – The Crimson Wave women’s basketball team will host Siena Heights University at home tonight at 7:00 pm.  The ladies are coming off a loss at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Lydia Aceviz and Lisa Upshaw is currently leading the Crimson Wave in scoring at 12.5 ppg.  The Crimson Wave are currently 4-5 overall.   

Men at Robert Morris Tonight

12/8/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team will travel to Chicago, IL to take on CCAC Division 1 opponent Robert Morris University.  The game will tip off at 7:30 pm and will be played at Alumni Gym on the campus of Loyola University. The game will be broadcast live on the Crimson Wave Radio Network.

The Crimson Wave are coming a off a loss to Bellevue University in the championship game of the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite this past weekend.    Keith Dean is currently leading the Crimson Wave and the CCAC in scoring at 22.4 ppg while Wilfredo Escobar is leading the Crimson Wave in assist per game with 2.8.  The Crimson Wave are currently 5-8 overall this season. 

Wrestling Competes at Little State Tourney

12/6/09 - The Crimson Wave wrestling team competed at the Little State Tournament at Trine University this weekend.  Dustin Boyd went 4-2 on the weekend finishing in 4th place while Derek Allen was 5-2 finishing in 5th place.  Artie Grubba finished in 8th place going 3-3 overall.  Nick Fouts was 1-2 and Lance Surma 2-1. 

Dean and Escobar Named to All-Invite Team

12/5/09 – Crimson Wave men’s basketball players Keith Dean and WIlfredo Escobar were named to the Crimson Wave Holiday Invite All-Invite Team this weekend.

Bellevue’s Avery Tyler was named most outstanding player.  Teammate Antoine Dade was also named to the all-invite team.  Waldorf’s Karl Dehesa and Bethel’s Andre Crudup were also named to the team.

Crimson Wave Holiday Invite Day Two 

12/05/09 – The Crimson Wave Holiday Invite ended with the Crimson Wave being defeated in the championship game against Bellevue University 78-68.

The consolation game ended with Waldorf College on top against Bethel University 72-59 in a well played game by both teams.
The championship game started with an early three point lead by the Crimson Wave on a Wilfredo Escobar three point shot.  The lead did not last long and Bellevue jumped ahead by five at the ten minute mark.  With 4:05 left in play the Crimson Wave regained the lead on a Keith Dean steal and layup.  After a set of back and forth jumpers the game went to half time in a tie 39 a piece. 

The second half started with Bellevue taking a 17 point advantage.   The Crimson Wave fought back going on a 12-2 run ending on a pair of Dean free throws.  The Crimson Wave could not hold on and  gave the game to Bellevue 78-68. 

Dean led all scoring with 21 points.  Escobar ended with 18 points and 6 rebounds.  Robert Pogue threw in 12 points and 7 rebounds. 
The Crimson Wave are now 5-8. 

Holiday Invite Day One

12/04/09 – The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team will face Bellevue University in the championship game of the Holiday Invite after defeating Waldorf College 72-65 in game one.
 
The Crimson Wave found themselves down by ten points in the first 8 minutes of play tonight against Waldorf College.  After a string of jumpers and a 13-2 run that was capped by Keith Dean free throw the men found themselves up one point 22-21.  Waldorf would make a small run of their own and the Crimson Wave found themselves tied , 33-33, at the half.

The second half was all Crimson Wave leading by as many as 10.  Wilfredo Escobar and Dean each had 12 and 11 points throughout the second half of play.  Dean finished the night with 24 and Escobar with 23.  The Crimson Wave went 17-20 on the night from the free throw line.

Game two saw Bellevue University matched up against Bethel University (TN).   After a back and forth battle throughout the first half Bellevue went to the locker at the half with a ten point lead 40-30.  The  second half of play was all Bellevue.  The final ended with Bellevue 85 and Bethel  57.

The Crimson Wave will face Bellevue University in the Championship game at 2:00 pm tomorrow December 5th.  Waldorf College will take on Bethel University at 12:00 pm in the consolation game.  All games are played at home on the campus of CCSJ. 

Dean Second Straight Player of the Week

12/2/09 - Crimson Wave junior Keith Dean (Gary, IN) continues to lead the men’s basketball team and the league offensively and has been named CCAC Men's Basketball Division II Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. For the week ending November 29, Dean averaged 22.7 points, while leading the Crimson Wave to two wins.

The Crimson Wave defeated Holy Cross College 100-81 early in the week. Dean logged 32 minutes and had a great stat line with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal. He shot 6-of-11 from the field, 3-of-6 from three-point range and made 5-of-6 free throws.

Despite a loss to Ohio Dominican University, 74-52, Dean had another solid night with 18 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The Crimson Wave bounced back the next day to defeat Shawnee State University in overtime, 78-76. Dean played an impressive 43 minutes, collecting 30 points, including five three-point field goals. He also tallied six rebounds, five assists, a block and three steals.
Dean was named to the Ohio Dominican Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team for his performances against Ohio Dominican and Shawnee State.

In the three games combined, Dean averaged 22.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He shot 42 percent from the field, 37 percent from behind the arc and 76 percent from the free throw line. He had a combined 10 made three-point field goals in the three games.

He now leads the CCAC with a 22.4 points per game average and is tied for fourth with a 6.0 rebounds per game average. Calumet is 4-7 on the year.

Dean Named to All-Classic Team

11/28/09 – Crimson Wave Junior men’s basketball player Keith Dean was named to the Ohio Dominican University Thanksgiving Classic All-Classic Team.   Dean scored 18 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the Crimson Wave’s loss to host Ohio Dominican University.  Dean threw in 30 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in the men’s overtime victory over Shawnee State University in game two of the classic. 

Crimson Wave Split at Thanksgiving Classic

11/28/09 - The Crimson Wave men’s basketball team competed at the Ohio Dominican Thanksgiving Classic this weekend in Columbus, Ohio.

The Crimson Wave had a rough start opening the classic, taking on host Ohio Dominican University Panthers.  The Crimson Wave struggled most of the night shooting just 26.9% from the field.  The Panthers defeated the Crimson Wave 74-52.  Junior Keith Dean led the Crimson Wave with 18 points and 8 rebounds.  Karl Anderson threw in 10 points for the men.

Game two of the classic brought success for the men, coming out on top in an overtime win against the Shawnee State University Bears.    The Crimson Wave led the entire first half going to the locker room with a four point lead 33-29.  The men got 12 points from Senior Fares Saqf-Alhait in the first half shooting 32% from the field.  Saqf-Alhait buried four three’s in the half. 

The second half started with the Crimson Wave in control.  After three minutes of play the Bears connected on a series of layups to take a 5 point lead.  After a series of lead changes the game tied at 71 points a piece on a Dean three pointer from Saqf-Alhait with 28 seconds remaining.  The Crimson Wave held their defensive positions and the Bears missed a jumper with time running out to send the game to overtime.  Overtime was all Crimson Wave escaping 78-76 over the bears.

Dean ended the night leading the Crimson Wave with 30 points while Junior Wilfredo Escobar dropped in 20 for the men.  Saqf –Alhait contributed six in the second half totaling 18 on the night. 

The Crimson Wave (4-7) will play next Friday in the opening round of the Crimson Wave invite against Waldorf College at 6:00 pm.  The invite will be held at the Recreation Athletic Facility on the campus of CCSJ.  For a complete schedule of the Crimson Wave Invite Click Here.
