(8/13/07) Schmidt Hired to Lead the Crimson Wave

Portage High School varsity assistant coach, Christina Schmidt, has accepted the women's basketball head coaching position at Calumet College of St. Joseph. She will become the fourth head coach for the Crimson Wave women's basketball program and will take over a squad that finished 7-25 overall and 1-7 in CCAC.

Schmidt, a stand out player at Purdue Calumet (1997-2000), played under the discipline of Coach Gary Hayes (former men's coach for the Crimson Wave). During her playing career for Purdue-Calumet Schmidt was a two-time 1st team CCAC all-conference selection while also achieving the honor of being a member of the 1,000 point club for Purdue-Calumet.

Having competed within the NAIA and the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, Schmidt has a full understanding of what a student-athlete will have to prepare for on the court and in the classroom. Education is the number one priority for Schmidt as she takes over the Crimson Wave women's basketball program. As the new head coach for the Crimson Wave women's basketball program, Schmidt wants to emphasize the importance of earning a college degree while competing at the highest level within NAIA women's basketball.

Schmidt's coaching style is a tough, disciplined, structured approach to the game which is similar to her former college coach, Gary Hayes. She also understands that the college season is long and can take a huge mental toll on a team. She plans on creating a positive, supporting team concept that will reinforce the mental portion of game in order to be better prepared towards the end of the season when it counts the most. During her seven years as an assistant at Portage High School, her alma mater, she was part of last season's sectional championship team, the team's first title in 19 years. Her experience as a Duneland Athletic Conference coach should pay quick dividends for the Crimson Wave due to her knowledge of quality basketball within the Region and being able to recruit some of the best local talent to Calumet College of St. Joseph.

"The future of the women's basketball program is in good hands." states Crimson Wave Athletics Director Peter Haze Haring. He goes on to say, "Coach Schmidt has the motivation, desire and understanding of what needs to be done to build a quality women's basketball program at Calumet College. Her experience within the Northwest Indiana Region will definitely allow the women's program to progress in a positive direction within the CCAC and NAIA."

Schmidt is hopeful that the upcoming 2007-08 season will provide a new sense of success as she looks to build a strong core of players for the future. Schmidt states, "Calumet competes in one of the toughest conferences within the NAIA and will have to recruit new players who are committed to succeeding in the classroom and on the court."
