Women's Bowling: 2008-09 Update
1/5/09 - The women’s bowling team has struggled a bit this season after losing three members from last season’s squad that qualified for the National Finals in Wichita, KS. Two of the three were starters and the third saw significant playing time. However, I am excited about the play of Katrina Elwardt (Freshman) and Melissa Christianson (Sophomore), both young ladies have improved tremendously since the start of the season. Alice Veenstra (Sophomore) and Sarah Bane (Senior) have been our rocks in the set-up and anchor positions all season. Sarah has made two All-Tournament teams and Alice recently made her first all-tourny team at the Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, NV. We have yet to have our lefty lead-off on a consistent basis due to injury which should give us a boost during the second half of the season. Our current ranking of 25th nationally is not a true indicator of this team’s talent. I’m confident this team has the talent and desire to qualify for a second National Finals.
Men’s Bowling: 2008-09 Update
1/05/09 - In what has turned out to be a productive but somewhat roller-coaster first half to the 2008-09 season, the Calumet College men’s bowling team has had to overcome early challenges as they strive to put together another successful season of collegiate bowling. After a fast start and the hope of challenging for a national title, the Crimson Wave found themselves needing to find a new starter heading into just the third event of the season.
The Crimson Wave opened the season with a respectable 4th place finish at the prestigious Tier I Hammer Midwest Classic in Milwaukee. They quickly gained momentum and captured their 3rd tournament title with a convincing 683-pin victory one week later at the Storm Brickyard Classic in Indianapolis. With a solid core of veterans leading the way, and several underclassmen fighting for starting roles, the CCSJ men seemed poised to continue building on their early season success.
Any momentum built through the first two events began to fade, though, with sub-par performances in the season’s next three events, culminating with a disappointing performance at the National Collegiate Team Match Games in St. Louis. During that time, the team struggled to maintain its early season form. Contributing to those struggles were the loss of freshman standout Toby Kraus and, later, third year starter Kevin Zatorski. Veteran Zatorski had proven himself to be the consummate teammate and an unselfish performer who arguably was one of the team’s best shot-makers. Kraus, too, had already made a significant contribution to the team’s early success by capturing an all-tournament selection in just his second competitive collegiate event at the Brickyard. An early indicator of his potential, Kraus had convincingly earned a starting role by finishing fourth in the team’s pre-season trials.
With a month-long break ahead of them after the NCTMG, the team went back to work on fundamentals in preparation for two important Tier I events to be held in Las Vegas just before the Christmas break: Sam’s Town Collegiate Shoot-out and the Las Vegas Invitational at South Point Bowling Center. They also had the goal of establishing a new starter to help the team regain some momentum heading into the new year.
It appeared the effort paid off in the first of the back-to-back events at Sam’s Town as the CCSJ men worked their way up from fifth place during the baker portion of the event to capture 2nd place behind Wichita State. Entering the tournament’s final round in fourth place, the Wave defeated Wichita State, Florida State and Arizona State, all of which were ahead of them entering the final match-play round. This propelled the Wave into 2nd place—their highest Tier I finish.
The second stop on the demanding tournament schedule in Las Vegas, was the LVI. Possibly feeling the drain of climbing a steep hill to capture 2nd at Sam’s Town, the Crimson Wave began the initial qualifying rounds of the LVI in less than stellar fashion. They finished day-1 in fourteenth place, and another come back was in order. The Wave responded as they often do. With great performances in the final three games of qualifying from Danny Locke, Ryan Alberson and Sammy Krucek the Wave jumped an incredible six spots to finish the qualifying rounds in 8th place. This gave the CCSJ men a bye entering the bracket match play finals of the event. Unfortunately, it was not to be as St. John’s used the momentum of a win in the first match play round to end the Crimson Wave’s Las Vegas journey.
The Calumet College of St. Joseph men will resume play on January 17-18 at Western Bowl in Cincinnati at the Bearcat Open. Including the Bearcat, the Wave have four events remaining in the regular season, including two Tier I tournaments.
