Will the Third Year be a Charm?
10/3/08 - The Crimson Wave men’s bowling team enters its third season with high expectations. A two-time national qualifying team under Head Coach Mike Kubacki and Assistant Randy Vania is striving to make it three for three. In the team’s second season the men finished 7th in the country after winning the Fairview Heights Sectional.
“I think that we are ready to make a run at the title. Knowledge, plus experience, plus desire, equals a national title and this year I think that we have all three” says coach Kubacki.
This year’s starting squad returns all five starters. Leading the way for the men is NCBCA 2nd Team All-American selection and team captain Ryan Gleghorn. “Gleghorn has really taken last year’s lessons to heart and has motivated himself to fix them. He has something to prove this season” says Coach Kubacki. Fellow captain Ryan Alberson is back for his third season with the Wave. An extremely hard worker, Alberson focuses on every shot trying to improve his game.
Sophomore Sammy Krucek is the team’s most explosive bowler in the lineup. Junior Danny Locke, the team’s only left-handed bowler, has grown into an experienced mature bowler. Locke’s role as a lead off bowler will set the tone for each match. The underclassmen will look to Locke for guidance and mentoring. Junior Kevin Zatorski is the team’s best shot maker. His mental approach and attitude make him the ultimate team player.
Finishing out the top are newcomers Toby Kraus and Justin Hauser along with returnee Loman Fox. Fox, a sophomore, gained knowledge and experience last year. The Wave is looking for him to apply that experience to deepen the bench and help take the team a step farther. Hauser, a Griffith High School graduate, has learned Coach Kubacki’s philosophy through high school and should be well prepared for the college game. Hauser also brings a consistent strike ball to the Wave’s arsenal. Rounding out the top eight is Kraus, “a high rev player”, who brings consistency and intensity to the program. “A great high school bowler,” says Coach Kubacki. “Toby will be the player that will surprise us this season. “
Returnees Karl Marx and Matt Komisarcik are not ruled out as possible starters later in the season. Both competed at the national tournament last season and have a tremendous amount of ability on the lanes. Getting off to a slow start both should warm up mid-season.
The Wave have a long season ahead of them, including six Tier 1 events, using the Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis, IN as a preparation for sectionals. Coach Kubacki says his biggest challenge of the season is “to keep the team level minded and not let them get ahead of themselves. As long as we keep our mind on the goal and not forget about the process, we will do just fine”
Women’s Bowling Looking to Spare Their Way to Nationals
10/03/08 - The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team will enter its third year of competition under Head Coach Shon Washington. In only the team's second season the team qualified for the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships finishing 15th last season. With a returning core of players, including three starters, the team’s experience level is high and pressure is on to repeat last season’s success. Coach Washington’s 2008-2009 squad is not a team that will bury the competition in strikes, but collect every spare and keep consistency until the last ball is thrown. Coach Washington’s philosophy is simple and comes in two parts: “Work hard and success will follow” and his favorite “Don’t tell me how well you can bowl, show me!”
Five of the eight players who helped the team to the national tournament return to this year’s squad. The team will be led by Senior Sarah Bane, the most talented women’s bowler in the program, who also has the most experience in tournament competition. With her hard work ethic and focus on the lanes, the team should remain successful this season. Sophomore Alice Veenstra returns from a strong freshman season. With the potential to become a great tournament bowler, Coach Washington will focus on strengthening her mental game. Sophomore Chandra Murphy will give the Wave the edge in the final frames of match. Coach Washington will look for Murphy to step in and come up with big spares in crunch time, With the strength of this left handed underclassmen. Senior Diana Fleck and Junior Amber Lagunas will keep the team consistent. With national tournament experience and pressure, the two upperclassmen will be the glue holding the seams together. Lagunas will look to have her break out year, while Fleck keeps her tough role as the utility player.
Joining the top eight this season are Freshmen Michele Grammatica, Freshmen Megan Warner, and Sophomore Melissa Christianson. “Grammatica has all the credentials of a great high school bowler. We’re just waiting to see if it transfers to the college game” says Coach Washington. Megan Warner, only second to Bane, has the tournament and sport pattern experience of any bowler on the team. Wrapping up the eight, Christianson is still coming off last year’s injury that kept her from the national experience. Christianson will use this season to gain experience and help the team in the long haul for a tournament win.
The team has set high goals for this season, including winning a Tier 1 event and taking the first round of nationals. The team will see the national field long before the national tournament when it travels to South Bend, IN for the Blue and Gold Classic. With all top 20 teams present, this should be a nice preview for what the team has to show.
