
Women’s Competes at Blue and Gold
1/22/12 – The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team took a 17th place finish at the Blue and Gold Classic in South Bend, IN this past weekend.
The Crimson Wave ended day one in 17th place after rolling a 956 for their highest game of the day. IN day tow of the event the ladies pushed forward making their highest game 961 but still ending the tournament in 17th.
Freshman Amanda Dodd led the team with a 192 average, followed by senior Katrina Elwardt with a 178 average.
Women’s Bowling Finishes 8th at Hoinke
1/16/12 – The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team competed at the Roto Grip Classic this weekend in West Chicago, IL.
The Crimson Wave finished 8th overall out of 17 teams in a very competitive tournament.
The Crimson Wave ladies will be back in action this weekend at the Blue and Gold Classic in South Bend, IN.
Ladies Compete in Las Vegas
12/22/11 – The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team competed in the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout at Texas Star Lanes then a day later at the Las Vegas Invitational at Sunset Station.
The Crimson Wave finished 8th overall at the Collegiate Shootout after sitting in fourth place after block number two. Amanda Dodd led the ladies with an 8th place individual finish averaging 206.7 with teammate Katrina Elwardt 22nd averaging 187.
A day later the Crimson Wave finished 7th at the Las Vegas Invitational with Elwardt finishing 7th overall and Dodd 9th.
The Crimson Wave ladies will take a few weeks off for the holidays and return to action on January 14th and 15th at the Rotogrip Eagles Baker Challenge in West Chicago, IL.
Women’s Bowling Rolls Into 8th
11/1/11 - The Crimson Wave Women’s bowling team competed in the Boilermaker Classic this past weekend at the Arrowhead Bowl in Lafayette, IN.
The Crimson Wave ladies continued their trend of good play while improving their position throughout the event. Day one found the Crimson Wave in 10th Place after the regular team game portion of the event. The ladies were led in the regular team games by senior Jessica Funk, who finished in 15th overall (among 143 players) with a 188.4 average. Others who cracked the Top 50 were: freshman Kelsy Toth (36th – 176.0 avg.), junior Rhiannon Bauer (45th – 171.6 avg.), junior Katie Jones (48th – 170.8 avg.).
On day two the Crimson Wave once again worked hard to improve our position in the standings. During the Baker Game portion of the event (16 games), the ladies averaged right at 180 with a high game of 223 to climb two spots and finish the event in 8th Place.
The Crimson Wave will travel to the National Team Matches on November 25th and 26th.
Crimson Wave Ladies Finish 4th Overall
10/16/11 - The Crimson Wave started strong and never let up as they completed Day 1 in 4th place (23 teams) at the 2011 Orange and Black Classic in Centerville, OH.
Junior Rhiannon Bauer led the team, finishing in 31st place with a 184 average for six games. Not far behind was senior Katrina Elwardt in 37th place with a 181 average. Other notable performances were turned in by senior Dorothea West (601 – 3 games), freshman Amanda Dodd (766 – 4 games), senior Jessica Funk (548 – 3 games) and freshman Kayla Riffle (728 – 4 games). Everyone contributed, and the Crimson Wave continued their solid play during the Baker portion of the event on Day 2, as the team averaged 193.5 for 16 Baker games. This qualified the team for the match-play bracket finals as the #4 seed. Facing the #5 seed, Notre Dame College, in match 1, the Crimson Wave advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory (best of 5). Unfortunately, Lindenwood was too strong for the Crimson Wave in the semi’s as they fell 3-0, but a first round match-play win and 4th place finish was a terrific performance from our ladies.
Veenstra Finishes Top 4 at Nationals
5/24/11 – Crimson Wave bowler Alice Veenstra finished her run in the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championship in the top four.
Veenstra qualified for bracket play third overall receiving first and second round byes for her performance. In the first match of the day Veenstra took the win 3 games to 1 winning 183-178, 189-182, 168-221, and 204-158 over Pikeville College’s Kim Yioulos sending Veenstra to the final four.
In the final four match up Veenstra took on Central Florida’s Kim Bunting. Veenstra fell behind early being defeated in game one 236-204. Veenstra came back in game two winning 203-202 with a strike in the tenth. Veenstra could not hold Bunting off in games three and four being defeated 214-174 and 182-141.
Veenstra’s final four appearance is the first ever in the Crimson Wave bowling program history.
Veenstra and Toth Finish Day One
5/23/11 – Crimson Wave bowlers Alice Veenstra and Josh Toth finished day one of the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships in Euless, TX.
On the ladies side Veenstra finished the day in third overall out of sixteen bowlers grabbing a total of 2,351 pins. Veenstra’s finish will give her first and second round byes tomorrow as the championship heads to bracket play in a single elimination best of five game tournament.
On the men’s side Toth finished with 2, 294 pins which sits him 17 out of a total 24 bowlers. Toth will enter round one of the single elimination bracket play tomorrow morning.

4/1/11 – The Crimson Wave bowling teams are currently competing at the NAIA Bowling Championships in Indianapolis, IN. The championships are being held at the Woodland Bowl. There are two featured lanes for each men and women being streamed live over the internet at Bowl.com. The Crimson Wave bowling teams will make appearances on these lanes throughout the tournament. Women’s Bowling Finishes Fifth at Sectionals
3/13/11 – The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team finished fifth at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Sectionals in Peoria, IL at Landmark Lanes.
The Crimson Wave women ended day one in fifth place just shy of the fourth place qualifying position. The Crimson Wave women came out strong this morning fighting for the qualifying place. The ladies fell 60 pins short, finishing fifth overall.
Senior Alice Veenstra qualified for the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships Thursday night finishing the singles round in second place. Veenstra will compete in Euless, TX May 23-24.
Bowlers Named Academic All-Americans
3/8/11 – Nine Crimson Wave bowlers have earned the distinction of Academic All-American awarded by the National Bowling Coaches Association.
Eight women’s bowlers were given the honor, Dorothea West, Alice Veenstra, Shannon Wensel, Rhiannon Bauer, Sara Bell, Shannon Finton, Jessica Funk, Jordan Harrington and one men’s bowler in Sammy Krucek.
To be selected to the NCBCA team, a bowler must be a United States Bowling Congress collegiate athlete who has a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 based on a 4.0 scale. More than 530 collegiate bowlers earned academic honors for the year.
Bowling Sectionals Announced
2/23/11 – The USBC has released the sectional pairings for the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship Sectionals for 2011. Both the men and women bowling teams have been selected to attend the Peoria, IL Sectional.
The USBC has four ITC Sectionals, Peoria, IL, Allentown, PA, Chattanooga, TN, Euless, TX. The top four teams from each sectional will qualify for the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships on April 20-23 at AMF Peach Lanes in Columbus, Ga.
The sectional will take place on March 12-13 at the Landmark Lanes in Peoria, IL. The Crimson Wave men will look to qualify for the USBC ITC for the fifth straight time while the women are trying to make this their third time in five years.
Ladies Finish 9th at Blue and Gold
1/23/11 – The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team competed at the Blue and Gold Classic this weekend in South Bend, IN. This event is classified as a USBC Tier 1 event where team’s can earn power points.
The Crimson Wave ladies finished 9th overall out of 41 teams.
The Crimson Wave will be back in action on the weekend of February 5th-6th for the McKendree Baker Challenge in St. Louis, MO.
Bowling Competes at Sam’s Town
12/22/10 – The Crimson Wave bowling teams competed at the Sam’s Town Invitational in Las Vegas, NV this week. The invitational is a tier 1 event for both teams.
The Crimson Wave women finished 6th overall out of 20 teams. Alice Veenstra finished 16th overall out of 99 bowlers averaging 189.5.
The Crimson Wave men finished 8th overall out of 47 teams. Toby Kraus finished 18th overall out of 240 bowlers averaging 205.5.
The Crimson Wave will be back in action this week at the Las Vegas Invitational.
Bowling Teams Top 10 in NAIA Rankings
12/20/10 – The Crimson Wave bowling teams are both ranked in the top ten of the NAIA’s first ever Coaches Poll.
The Crimson Wave men are sitting at 6th with 65 votes while the women are 8th with 21 votes. The NAIA currently recognizes bowling as an emerging sport.
The Crimson Wave bowling programs were started in the 2006-2007 season. Since the start the Crimson Wave women have made 2 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship appearances while the Crimson Wave men have made 4 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship along with a runner up finish at the 2010 USBC ITC.
Women’s Bowling 11th at National Team Games
11/27/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team finished 11th overall at the National Collegiate Team Match Games at the St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights, IL.
The Crimson Wave women will travel to Las Vegas, NV on December 19th for two straight tournaments in the Collegiate Shootout and Glen Carlson Invitational.
Bowling Finds Success at Orange and Black
10/16/10 - A trip to Pikeville University’s Orange & Black tournament in the Dayton, OH area for our CCSJ Bowling Teams proved to be well worth the nearly 5-hour trip this past weekend. Both teams vied for their respective titles by qualifying for the tournament’s Top-8 Match Play finals with solid team performances during the six-game qualifying and 16-game baker rounds. The Women finished in 6th Place (38 teams) after qualifying for match-play in 4th, while the Men finished in 2nd Place (60 teams) after coming ever so close to another title.
The Crimson Women easily made their way into the best-of-5 Baker match-play finals with solid performances from a trio of veteran keglers. Katie Jones paced a balanced Crimson Wave attack with a six game total of 1140 (190.0 avg.), good for 15th place in the individual category. Not far behind was Alice Veenstra in 17th place with an 1126 total (187.7 avg.). Rounding out the trio’s solid performance was Katrina Elwardt with a total of 1104 (184.0 avg.), good for 25th place. Other notable performances were turned-in by Dorothea West (751/4) and Freshman Jordan Harrington (404/2) coming off the bench.
In the initial match, the Lady Wave won a close game-one against Robert Morris when a clutch spare by anchorwoman, Alice Veenstra, sealed a 168-165 victory. The next two games were close to the end, but the Eagles consistent shot-making proved to be too much as they outscored the Wave 188-156 and 193-179, then 224-188 in the finale to advance to the second round of match play.
On the Men’s side, the ever-strong 2010 National Runner-up CCSJ Men lost a heart-breaking final match to Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO) to finish in 2nd Place. After two games in the finals, the Crimson Men quickly found themselves down 2-0. They fought hard, though, and battled back to tie the match 2-2 with solid performances in games 3 & 4. In the 5th and deciding game, the Crimson Wave equaled Lindenwood’s performance throughout, and it came down to the final frame before the second of back-to-back pocket splits (4-9’s) denied our men another title.
The Crimson Men were led by senior Sammy Krucek, who made his second consecutive All-Tournament Team with a six-game total of 1319 (219.8 avg.). Close behind, and just missing the all-tournament team, was Mike Kubacki, Jr. with a 1312 total (218.7 avg.). Also, contributing to the team’s strong performance were Toby Kraus (1243/6) and Brett Wagner (1029/5).
The Women and Men Bowlers next travel to Lafayette, IN on October 30th to compete in the Purdue Boilermaker at Mike Aulby’s Arrowhead Lanes.
Women’s Bowling Finishes 10th at Hammer
10/3/10 - The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team finished 10th overall at the Hammer Midwest Tournament this weekend in Wauwatosa, WI.
Alice Veenstra finished 4th overall as an individual for the Crimson Wave earning all-tournament honors.
The Crimson Wave will travel to the Orange and Black Classic October 16-17th in Beavercreek, OH.
Vania Strikes Head Coaching Position with Crimson Wave
6/7/10 - Calumet College of St. Joseph Athletic Director Peter Haring has announced the hiring of Randy Vania as the new head women’s bowling coach for the Crimson Wave. Vania will replace Shon Washington as the program’s second head bowling coach since its inception in 2006.
“I am very excited to have Randy as the new head woman’s bowling coach at CCSJ. His knowledge of the game and of the Crimson Wave bowling program will be valuable in sustaining the success the women’s team has gained the past four seasons,” said Haring. “Randy was instrumental as an assistant with the men’s bowling program, helping the team to the USBC national finals this past season. The collegiate experience Randy has a acquired under Coach Kubacki has prepared him to accept the head coaching duties of the women’s bowling program. The CCSJ bowling teams, men and women, have become a nationally recognized and I believe Randy will continue to build upon the tradition of excellence established within the Crimson Wave bowling program.”
Vania served as the CCSJ men’s bowling assistant coach since 2006 helping transform the program into a national powerhouse. While with the men’s program the team qualified for the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships four straight years and became the 2009-10 USBC National Runners-Up this past season. Vania was responsible for many important aspects of the men’s program including analyzing lane conditions, pin tracking, recruiting and other responsibilities towards weekly training and tournament preparation.
“I really feel I can take this successful program to the next level. There are a lot of good players on this team and I feel like I can shape these players to succeed. I am really excited to have this opportunity,” said Vania on accepting the position.
Vania’s experience in coaching has also led him to a high school state championship while assisting at Griffith High School in 2007. He is also a USBC Bronze Level Certified Instructor along and still competes successfully in various USBC sanctioned tournaments as a player.
The Calumet College of St. Joseph women’s bowling program finished 21st in the final rankings for the 2009-10 season. During the first four seasons of competition the Crimson Wave women’s bowling program qualified for the USBC Collegiate National Tournament twice (2007-08 & 2008-09).
Ladies Finish 8th at Sectionals
3/14/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team finished 8th overall at the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Sectional in Chattanooga, TN.
The Crimson Wave ladies finished the sectional with 11,114 pins 622 pins short of the fourth place qualifying position. This was the last tournament of the year for the Crimson Wave women.
Women’s Bowling 10th After Day One
3/13/10 – The Crimson Wave women’s bowling team is currently in 10th place after the first day of competition at the Chattanooga, TN 2010 Intercollegiate Team Championships Sectional Qualifier.
The Crimson Wave women have tallied 5,443 total pins after the first 32 baker games. The women are currently 369 pins out of the 4th place qualifying position that is held by Purdue University.
The ladies will finish the sectional tomorrow with the remaining 32 baker games.
USBC Sectional Pairings Announced
2/24/10 – The USBC has announced the pairings for the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship sectionals.
The Crimson Wave men have been assigned to the Peoria Sectional. The sectional will be held at Landmark Lanes in Peoria, IL. The sectional includes the current No. 1 team in Wichita State University, No. 7 Newman University, No. 13 Wright State University. The Crimson Wave men are currently ranked No. 10 and will look to improve upon last year’s 4thplace finish.
The Crimson Wave women’s team will travel south to the Chattanooga Sectional held at Holiday Bowl Brainerd in Chattanooga, TN. The Crimson Wave women’s team is currently ranked 21st. Sectional opponents include No. 1 Central Florida, No. 6 Lindenwood, and No. 9 Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Crimson Wave women finished 4th last year in the Fairview Heights sectional.
The Crimson Wave men and women will compete at the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship sectionals on March 11-14.
Ladies Finish 11th at McKendree
2/8/10 - The Crimson Wave Women's Bowling Team finished in 11th place this weekend after competing in the McKendree Baker Challenge hosted by McKendree University.
“The 40-game baker format provided us with the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming sectional qualifier which also has an all baker game format. Although we were not pleased with our overall performance, we will build on the lessons learned to hopefully qualify for our third consecutive National Finals appearance next month.” Said Coach Washington on the competition
Ladies Work Hard at Lions Classic
1/30/10 - The 16th ranked CCSJ Women’s Bowling Team finished 5th this past weekend at the Lions Classic hosted by Lindenwood University. This event had an unusual format which put the ladies’ mental games and shot-making abilities to the test. The tournament used two of the Professional Bowlers Association five lane patterns on each pair during competition. The longer Shark pattern was used on the left lane and the shorter Viper on the right. The ladies were prepared but could not quite get a rhythm going ending day 1 in 7th place.
Day 2- The field would bowl 12 additional baker games for qualifying purposes and placed in a 14 –team double-elimination bracket. Entering as the number seven seed, the ladies responded with a 2-2 record in bracket-play before being eliminated in three games by a strong Mckendree team in the best 2 of 3 format. The team was led individually by Junior co-captain Jessica Funk averaging 189 for the six-game set on Saturday.
The women will compete next weekend (Fe. 6-7) the Mckendree Baker Challenge in Fairview Heights, IL before taking time off to prepare for the Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis. (Feb 20-21)
Ladies Finish Strong at Blue and Gold
1/24/10 - The Crimson Wave Women’s Bowling Team claimed a 14th place finish at the Blue & Gold Classic annually held in South Bend, IN. This year, 45 women’s teams from all over the country competed in the two-day event. The ladies of Calumet College struggled a bit on Day 1 qualifying in 23rd place after the five team game set. However, the team found their stride during the baker portion of the tournament, averaging 170 for the twenty baker game set before finishing the tournament in 14th place. The Crimson Wave were lead by Junior co-captain Alice Veenstra who finished 26th individually. The women’s team will travel next to St. Charles, Missouri for the Lions Classic hosted by Lindenwood University.
Crimson Wave Women Roll to a third place finish at the Hoinke
1/16/09 - Cincinnati, OH - The Crimson Wave Women's Bowling Team competed in the 10th annual Hoinke Classic this past weekend and returned home with a third place finish in a field of 27 teams. The field bowled on two different PBA patterns over the two day event. (Shark-Saturday, Viper-Sunday) The ladies qualified in 5th position for the nine game qualifying rounds with a pin total of 7934 plus 420 bonus pins. The field was cut to the top six teams after qualifying with bracket play determining the overall winner.
In the first round, the Crimson Wave defeated the Wright State Raiders 3 games to 1 in the best of five baker format. The second round brought a much more formidable opponent in top seed and national powerhouse Pikeville College. The ladies saved their best for last, but it was not enough to overcome the experience of Pikeville, falling 3 games to 1 to the Lady Bears.
“This was a complete team effort by the ladies. When one or two individuals found the lane pattern difficult, the other team members were there to keep the team steady. I was also impressed by first year team members Fallon Jarboe and Jessica Zaideman who did well this weekend in their first collegiate competition. Both young ladies played a significant role in our first round win over Wright State. I hope we can continue this momentum into next week's Tier 1 event in South Bend, IN.” Said Coach Shon Washington
Ladies Compete in Las Vegas
12/24/09 - The Calumet College Women's Team recently traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in two USBC Tier 1 events; the Collegiate Shoot-out and the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational. The ladies finished the Collegiate Shoot-out in seventh position (19 teams competing), led by junior co-captain Alice Veenstra who finished with a 6- game average of 181. She was followed by freshman Ashley Carey with a 176 average. Alice and Ashley finished 12th and 17th respectively as individuals in a field of more than 90 bowlers.
There was more great bowling to come as the ladies improved on their 7th place finish in the collegiate shoot-out with an even more impressive 3rd place finish in the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational. The team was led this time by the sophomore Nikki Krooswyk and freshman Paige Jozwiak. NIkki led the team with a 9-game average of 185,15th place individual finish, and team high game of 244. Jozwiak bowled like a tournament veteran finishing 2nd on the team averaging 182 for 9 games and 16th individually.
The Crimson Wave Women are currently ranked 13th in the country and will next compete at the Hoinke Classic January 15-17 in Cincinnati, OH.
Ladies Compete at Brickyard Classic
10/1/09 - The Women’s Bowling Team traveled to Indianapolis Indiana this weekend to compete in the 15th Annual Brickyard Classic. After day 1 of the two day event, the Crimson Wave found themselves only 23 pins out of first place. Alice Veenstra led the team averaging 184.6 for the day one six game set and was rewarded with a spot on the all-tournament team finishing with the 3rd highest average in the women’s division. Day 2 however was a bit of a struggle for the ladies, averaging 164 for their 16 game baker set and falling to fourth place overall.
While the ladies did fall back a bit in the overall standings, several team members made their collegiate debuts and did very well for themselves and the team. First year team members Jamie Budziak and Katie Jones stepped-up big on day two. Budziak’s first roll as a collegiate athlete in competition resulted in a strike, surprisingly so were her next five. Jones did not disappoint either, her first six collegiate shots consisted of two strikes, three spares and one open. The Crimson Wave travel next to Las Vegas, Nevada Dec. 17-22 for two important tier one events.
Ladies Compete at Midwest
10/4/09 - The Crimson Wave women's bowling team competed at the Midwest Collegiate Bowling Tournament in Wauwatosa, WI this weekend. The ladies finsihed 10th overall as a team.
