INTERNSHIPS How do college students spell success in today’s job market? I-N-T-E-R-N-S-H-I-P-S! Internships provide you with the tools to effectively compete in today’s tight job market. Students who have at least one internship experience find they are more marketable than students who don’t. Three thousand U.S. employers surveyed by the National Center on the Educational Quality of the Workforce, listed student internships and other work experiences as important criteria for selecting entry-level hires (National Employer Survey, 1998*). In an effort to help guide you through internship opportunities, Calumet College of St. Joseph has an Internship Program in its Department of Career Services. Some internships are required as part of your major area of study and some are elective. All are designed to help you explore the following components of your on-going career development: self knowledge (assessing your interests, values, and skills); exploring the world of work (work settings and job market realities); and making a dry run into the career development process (practicing interviewing, working with co-workers, managing supervisory relationships, developing as a professional). In summary, an internship can be a rich source of information and learning. For more information regarding CCSJ’s Internship Program, please click on FAQ’s. *Green, M.E. (1997) Internship Success . |
