Against the Grain, the annual literary journal of Calumet College of St. Joseph, features writing and artwork by students and alumni. The student editors sift through submitted short stories, essays, and poetry to bring together the best writing the college has to offer.
To go Against the Grain means to try the patience, to run rough and hard. We feel that the literary journal should reflect this ideology by analyzing contemporary society through the eyes of our diverse student body. By bringing a college into northwest Indiana, an area hit hard by economic forces, and offering quality education to the people who need it most, by tailoring an academic program to fit the needs of a student body that has not been afforded the luxuries commonly associated with college students, Calumet College, its staff, and faculty have gone against the grain. As the literary representative of the school we strive to follow in these footsteps.
