H1N1 (Swine) Flu Information

The H1N1 virus also known as the Swine Flu is a flu virus that is infectious in humans.   If this disease is not treated properly and becomes more severe, it can result in Pneumonia, respiratory failure,
or death.  Humans can spread the disease to each other by sneezing, touching, or being around someone that is infected.  Although the disease is spread from pigs to humans, you cannot get it from eating pork.  The disease can also be spread by touching objects commonly used with the virus on it such as door knobs and counters and then touching around the mouth or nose area.

Symptoms of this disease are:

  • Fever above 100.4°F
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Muscle Aches
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Researchers are unsure of how quickly and easily the virus is spreading.  It is necessary to take the following precautions to help prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after using it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You may also use alcohol-based hand cleaners.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, to avoid getting infected by germs.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you do get sick, consider staying home from work or school.
