Supplemental
Instruction Overview
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that increases student’s performance and retention.
The SI program utilizes peer assisted study sessions to aid students with traditionally difficult academic
courses.
A Supplemental Instructor is a “model student” a facilitator who helps students to integrate course content,
learning, and study strategies. A SI Leader is a student who has done well in the course and is thoroughly prepared
to share what he/she has learned about studying effectively. The SI Leader provides the structure for the
study session. Although an SI Leader does not re-lecture or introduce new materials, he/she will attend all
scheduled classes with the student for that designated course.
A Supplemental Instruction Session is an out-of- class study session provided for difficult courses to improve
understanding of the course material and improve student’s grades. A SI session is an opportunity, for
the student to review lecture notes, clarify materials, discuss ideas, and organize for a test as a group. In addition,
during the SI session the SI Leader models application of study strategies such as: note taking, graphic
organization, questioning techniques, vocabulary acquisitions, and test prediction and preparation.
SI sessions are for Learning Community students who need or want supplemental instruction in a course that
SI is offered. Students may attend as many sessions as they would like. All sessions will normally correspond
with class lectures, but depending on group size, sessions can be individually tailored to the student.
