OVERVIEW

Student
Support Services at Calumet College of St. Joseph helps and meet the
needs of students who have potential to do college work but who need
additional support to make an easier transition into college. The college
is committed to cultural diversity and educating the entire student,
by providing programming that assists in building futures. As part
of the commitment, Calumet College of St. Joseph developed the Student
Support
Services program to continue its on going efforts in enabling students
to achieve their
academic goals. To accomplish these goals, we provide:
CLASS Program
The Calumet College of St. Joseph Student Support Services CLASS (Cooperative
Learning and Student Success) program is a
3 day program designed to assist
the student in developing a personal and academic resource that will continue
to aid their progress while completing his or her degree. The focus will
be on developing skills in multiple content areas while assisting
the student in identifying
their personal strengths and weaknesses. Overall, the program provides the
student with the basics to make a positive beginning in their educational
endeavors.
PACE Program
The PACE (Personal Academic Career Excellence) program
is designed to assist students in improving their potential in graduating
from a four-year
institution.
The program works with the student to create a prescriptive education plan
for their time at Calumet College of St. Joseph. PACE provides resources
to assist in solving situations that arise during the students’ academic
career. The resources provided are testing, tutoring, study skills seminars,
mentoring, and career advisement. The Student Support Services PACE program
is here to ensure the student those opportunities are made available to assist
in attaining personal and academic success.
Testing
There are several types of tests offered through Student Support Services.
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is offered by appointment.
This test allows the student to receive college credit by testing in
an area of proficiency. Specific information pertaining to CLEP is available
in room 400. Diagnostic testing, to determine the students’ strengths
and weaknesses in reading, writing and math skills, is administered as
well as the COMPASS placement testing. A variety of additional testing
may be available by consulting the Director of Student Support Services.
Mentoring
Peer mentoring is coordinated through Student Support Services. Mentors
are matched with new students in an effort to provide links for academic,
social and personal success. The mentor’s role is to serve as a
guide, counselor and supporter. The program provides training
of
the mentors in areas such as student leadership, team building, study
skills and time management. The peer mentors present study skills workshops
to the student body each semester. Social activities for mentors and
new students are also scheduled through the Office of Student Support
Services.
Orientation
To facilitate a smooth transition to college life, the college conducts
a mandatory orientation program for all new students each semester. During
orientation, the student learns about Calumet College of St. Joseph--its
traditions, regulations, and opportunities--and meets with faculty, staff
members, peer mentors, new classmates and tours the facilities. |
