Do you want to learn how to start your own podcast? How about make a YouTube show with your own YouTube channel? Or do you want to debate movies or is Disney healthy for our society? Then Jose Arteaga is the guy you need to meet.
He’s Calumet College of St. Joseph’s new media director. You may have seen students lining up to take advantage of his knowledge Jose has to offer in Room 261 3-6p.m. Monday through Friday.
Arteaga attended St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana where he got his undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Communications.
“Politics was always a passion,” Arteaga said. “I always like the debating and the different types of philosophies. The bigger picture of not just how to run things but also how we run our daily lives and the different forms of politics that we see, from work politics to at-home politics to the actually national politics.”
Arteaga said he was hungry for more knowledge so he earned a Master’s degree from Purdue University Northwest in Communications and Media Studies.
“I also had the opportunity to teach there,” Arteaga said. “I was able to teach some public speaking classes there. I love teaching. I love interacting with students. And I told myself that I wanted to come back into some type of higher-educating setting by either working with students one-on-one or teach students. So that’s what my role is (at CCSJ).”
Communications wasn’t a hard choice for Arteaga. He was always fascinated on how humans communicate with each other and learning to make weaknesses his strengths because he used to hate working in groups until he took courses on group communications, different roles in a group and so forth.
“I’ve taken a lot of communication classes over the couple years. I always told myself that, ‘why don’t people take these communication classes?’ There are a lot of other communication classes that you can take. There are classes you can take on interpersonal communications. On how we communicate with two or three individuals and group communications.” Arteaga said. “I always hate working in a group but after taking some of these classes and I’ve kind of learned the different roles within a group.”
Arteaga is a self proclaimed big movie buff. “I’ve seen 58 movies at the theaters this year alone. I go like two or three times a week. I’d probably go tonight,” Arteaga said. “I really love the film industry and I really want to see how the film industry works.”
Arteaga is ecstatic to spread his philosophy in communications and teach students here whatever they want to know as far as video editing and even help students achieve their career goals.
“You can do it. You can do anything as long as you have the drive.”
