November 19, 2020

To: CCSJ Students, Faculty and Staff
From: President Dr. Amy McCormack

Dear CCSJ Community,

With the increase in COVID positivity rates in our surrounding communities, holiday gatherings over the coming weeks, and also given increasing restrictions throughout Illinois, Indiana, and our local communities, all classes will move to remote instruction effective Monday, November 23, which is the beginning of our Thanksgiving break. Remote instruction will continue through the remainder of the semester. It is critically important that communication channels be open and used frequently as we manage through the next three weeks of the semester. Please check email and Blackboard often and respond, as needed.

Also due to travel and gatherings into the New Year, Calumet College will delay the start of the spring semester a week. Classes will begin on Tuesday, January 19th. The campus is closed Monday, 1/18, for the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. During the first two weeks of January, there may be limited staff on campus, so appointments are encouraged. Courses will resume with a multimodal delivery (in person, hybrid, virtual and online). Please check your email during the holiday breaks for any updates.

The school will remain open to assist students with computer access, tutoring, library resources, and quiet study spaces. Administrative offices will be open with personnel rotating between their offices and working from home. Office personnel are available through email or by phone, and Zoom meetings can be arranged to assist with student and employee needs. CCSJ, with the compliance and assistance of many, has managed our positive cases very well. As of today, we only have 10 active cases, which is less than 1.5% of our on-campus college community. Thank you for caring for each other and wearing your mask. Please continue to protect one another.

I encourage you to use the resources that are available to help you personally navigate these challenging times. CCSJ offers counseling for students through Crown Counseling, and employees can access our health benefits. The chapel will remain open to assist with your spiritual needs and the college community will be included in the prayers of many.

Nourish your bodies over Thanksgiving and make sure you connect with friends, family and loved ones in a safe manner. At this time of Thanksgiving, it has never been more important to focus on those things for which we are grateful. There are many things we cannot change, so I invite you to try and change your focus from the gravity of the pandemic to those things that fill your heart and bring you joy.

Wishing you a healthy Thanksgiving,

Dr. Amy McCormack
President
