HSI STEM Support
Access, Achievement and Assessment
Calumet College of St. Joseph is a proud recipient of the Department of Education-sponsored HSI-STEM grant.
According to a Pew Research report from April 2021, Hispanic people make up 17% of the total workforce, but only 8% of workers in STEM fields. As Indiana’s first Hispanic Serving Institution, CCSJ plays a pivotal role in bridging this gap.
The primary goal of the grant is to increase enrollment in STEM-related majors, with a focus on Hispanic and low-income students. The grant will fund several important initiatives, including outreach to area high schools and partnerships with local industries, resulting in career opportunities for graduates and additional student support services.
Supporting Student Achievement
Through a major grant from the Department of Education for Hispanic-Serving Institutions Calumet College of St Joseph is supporting student achievement in STEM disciplines. The program enhances:
Through partnerships with region high schools and community colleges, the JumpStart Dual Credit Program for high school students, Transfer Acceptance Guarantees (TAGs) for learners with some college experience, and bilingual programming for families.
Through the Bridge to College, first-year and second-year programming, supplemental instruction in gateway courses, and integrated experiential learning and career preparation.
Demonstrating what works to ensure ongoing improvement in support programs.
