CCSJ Celebrates the Completion and Groundbreaking of Two Community Projects

Calumet College of St. Joseph (CCSJ) celebrates the completion of one project and the groundbreaking of another this fall. Both projects are supported through the Lilly Endowment Campus & Community Collaboration Initiative grant, awarded to CCSJ in August of 2024 to advance a series of community-driven projects over the five-year grant period. CCSJ’s proposal “Campus as Community, Community as Campus” contained engagement efforts that emphasized making the Whiting-Robertsdale area a more thriving place to live, learn, work & play.

The Ray P. Gallivan Field at Jeff Cain Stadium returfing project was made possible through the Lilly grant and the College’s partnership with School City of Whiting. The project was completed in time for Calumet College’s Sprint football home opener. To celebrate the completion of the field’s renovation and CCSJ’s partnership with School City of Whiting, Superintendent Dave Verta performed the coin toss at the sprint football home opener on September 20th, where the Crimson Wave won 57-7 against the Oakland City Mighty Oaks. As home field for both CCSJ Sprint Football and Whiting Highschool Football the returfing project provides greater safety for student-athletes and an enhanced visitor experience for teams and fans.

Another project funded by the Lilly grant and CCSJ’s partnership with the City of Whiting broke ground in late September at Oil City Stadium. This project includes the installation of artificial turf that will extend the stadium’s usability during the year and lower maintenance costs over time for this municipally owned stadium. The updates and renovations are scheduled to be completed by next season for use by CCSJ’s baseball team, Whiting High School, and the Northwest Indiana Oilmen.
